You gotta give old Joe credit for producing this #1 hit:

I just love that DC5's Glad All Over and Supremes' Baby Love "stomping" production gimmick that he makes use of.

I'm sure I read that Joe had been working on that sound for some time, and was really peeved when Glad All Over came out. And I think his song predates Baby Love???

Just like in the film Exorcist, a wallet is used for the sound of a 360 degree creaking neck. Sonic genius that fools the masses. All in the E.Q. and input source.

I think he was a pioneer, but one of a few, and I'm not too sure many people were influenced by him. The times ther were a changin' anyway.
I think it's a bit like the Vikings getting to america - they got there first but no one took a blind bit of notice. You needed someone like Colombus with a bit of cash and a good agent......

...and tried to record the voices of the dead in his local graveyard.
he was obsessed with Buddy Holly, and killed his landlady and himself on the anniversary of Holly's death.
now that's eccentric.
I live about 10 minute drive from his old studio. I'll try and get some pictures.
