Moscow, Russia
« on: April 23, 2008, 10:54:16 AM »

Since I moved to Moscow in October 2006 I liked it much.
I like it as a cultural center of Russia and one of the culture capitals of the World.
- There is a lot of cultural events hold here every day. Classical music concerts, ballets, rock-music concerts, various exhibitions, theaters, cinemas, etc.
- Moscow is a historic capital. Many landmarks and just old-fashioned districts and beautiful places. You can walk during all days in Moscow and every day find something special.
Of course there are a lot of things people don't like here. We don't talk about politics here ;)
- There are huge traffic jams during all day. They don't solve a problem with a lot of cars, you can see one car on another in every court.
- Contaminated air, especially near broad streets.

Among things one can be afraid of here in Moscow I'm sure Moscow is the place must to visit for people who are interested in seeing the World and in liberalizing.

What do you think dear forum members?!
I would like to show Moscow to whom of you who'll visit it while I'm here :)

To be honest Dmitry - St Petersburg holds a much greater attraction for me, and if I could only visit one Russian city that would be it. It's probably Hollywoods fault, but I have an image of Moscow as being a bit scary and forebiding.
A (I think anyway) interesting Moscow story that I've seen on some history sites, but I've never been able to validate: apparently the first German shell ( a blind ranging shot) fired at Moscow in late 1941 hit Moscow Zoo and killed the only elephant in Moscow. I wonder what odds those German gunners would have got for that little feat. People quote it as an example of the law of big numbers - million in one chances do happen, you just need the million examples.
Any verification of this by you Russian folk would be greatly appreciated.

That's the problem is  :o Most foreign people think Moscow is a bit scary and forebiding, as you said Kevin, but nobody can offer a real example of it that can prevent you from visiting Moscow ;) I think tourists feel comfortable here enough. The one true thing about Moscow is that it is has expensive hotels.
St Petersburg is a great city too, I've never been there. I wish I could.

As about elephant :( I was trying to find out about this story long ago, but found nothing :( I was in a Moscow Zoo and didn't see any mention of it in the elephants enclosure.

I really enjoyed my visit to St Petersburg. The history and museums are awesome. I would like to see Moscow as well; I always enjoy seeing new places. The Russian people were very friendly and welcoming to me, which was lucky, because I don't speak a word except a badly pronounced "spasibo". I thanked my way across Russia! ;D

Your pictures are beautiful!

Is Moscow very far from Kiev in Ukraine? Free concert by Paul McCartney there on June 14th. Just to let you know.  :)

It takes about 12 hours by train Moscow-Kiev. I think I'll travel!
But the concert is free, I can't imagine how they handle it. Thousands of people from Ukraine and Russia will arrive. I don't know how to be...  :-/

I don't care if they are trying to scare anybody or just to make show.
It was just impressive to be near all these tanks in the middle of the city :)

That's definitely reminiscent of downtown Toronto, say around Spadina and Bathurst Streets, or Bay and Dundas. You may have just talked me into going.  :)
