Lennon/McCartney - the ultimate song
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:28:47 AM »

What do you think the "ulitmate" Lennon/McCartney song was?

You can base your opinion on music/ lyrics alone, or even what song embodies what those two were to each other and music in general.

I think it would be interesting to see other people's opinions on this topic.  cheer1

DSL, if by "Lennon/McCartney song" you mean a true collaboration of the two, then I feel that We Can Work It Out is their finest work.  It was written during their introspective phase and recorded during the Rubber Soul sessions.  I lke how John answered Paul in his middle eight and changed the tempo thus giving the song deeper perspective.  The use of the harmonium accentuated this.

'I've Got A Feeling' is the song that immediately came to mind. The two of them singing together/against each other is awesome.

I considered A Day In The Life, but it doesn't hold any true meaning, just a bunch of clues.   ;D    There's no doubt that musically it's a better work, but I really like The Beatles' Rubber Soul period and the introspective songs they were writing.  That's why I went with We Can Work It Out.

We Can Work It Out-yin and yang.

That's how I've always viewed the song, too, and that would be my pick.

That would be right up there for me too. It hits the spot lyrically and musically.

Tough question. I would have said it's a toss up for me between We Can Work it Out and Day in the Life - and those were the two mentioned above!
If I have to make a choice, I would likely say A Day in the Life. Musically, it's just brilliant. The ultimate build up of sound... it's one of the most intense climaxes I've ever heard. I love that it's equally a Lennon/McCartney song, they both had bits here and there to contribute to make this incredible masterpiece. Ooh every time I hear it, it still blows me away!

"The Word" was pretty co-written as well. It's one of my favorite songs.

I think She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand both rank way up there. They sat down one day and cranked She Loves You out together in a few hours. Amazing. I think in both of these songs, they have completely equal parts in every way, both in writing it and singing it.

I don't know if there is one song that truely represents what both of them were capable of, but there is one single that does: Strawberry Fields Forever b/w Penny Lane.

^Good point. That single is worthy of being a double A side.
