What albums should I recommend to my friend?
« on: September 09, 2004, 06:30:40 PM »

My friend acquired Sgt. Pepper a few weeks ago and likes the CD.  He never understood why I was so obsessed with them, mostly because he associates the Beatles with their older pieces (which I love, but he doesn't like as much.  He really doesn't like I Saw Her Standing There).  He's more into psychadelic sounds like Strawberry Fields (he says I Am The Walrus isn't really as psychadelic as stuff he's heard from Bob Dylan, but that's understandable).  He also says he can kinda see why The Beatles are so great through the song Let It Be.  So, since he doesn't like early pop rockers from The Beatles, which albums should I recommend?

I was thinking Revolver, for its sophisticated tunes (Eleanor Rigby, Taxman), and Abbey Road for deep lyrics and clean sounds and variety of genre (Something, Ending Suite, Because).

I would recommend Rubber Soul and also revolver, as you say. So he can listen to songs like "She said she said" with those backwards guitars, etc.

Try Abbey Road and Rubber Soul. He'll get a broad range of the Beatles musical spectrum

OK, there 3 albums he will like - Revolver, Sgt Pepper (he already has that though, right?) and Magical Mystery Tour. After that you can introduce him to Rubber Soul then the White Album then..... Ah, I wish I[/b] was discovering for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 would seem like a good choice, if it weren't for the fact that the first dozen tracks he might like (I don't know if it's a dozen of early rockers on there, I'm just guessing.  I'm prolly off).  There are a lot of psychadelic and stranger songs that aren't on 1, though.  I don't think anything on the White Album got on 1, and it holds a lot of strange, funny, and unique songs.  Same with Rubber Soul.

RS I was thinking, too.  Since he likes more unique stuff, something like Norwegian Wood he would like.  I'm not sure about the rest of the album though.  It seems like Revolver is a very popular choice, and I do think he'd enjoy those songs with the psychadelic sounds and the very amazing harmonies (And Your Bird Can Sing) and Taxman, the political statement.

Magical Mystery Tour is something I almost forgot about  :P.  True, it does seem like Revolver thru White Album would be best for him now.

Start with Rubber Soul and go from there. He would probably like all of the albums from that point on.

Abbey Road and Magical Mystery Tour. If he especially likes the style and athmosphere of Sgt. Pepper's, I think those two are the Beatles albums that are most comparable to it.

they are all good. i recommend Live at the BBC, just so you can hear how good they really were. Stark, no overdubs, retakes etc.....

The Beatles were the the best band befor and since. Nothin will ever surpass what they did
