Information on your music collection
« on: July 22, 2012, 08:12:19 PM »

Talk about everything concerning your album collection.
How many albums do you own? How do you purchase your music? Can you remember your first album? Your latest? The worst/weirdest albums you own?

Also, feel free to share interesting stories about albums.

I probably own about 1250 albums (some purely digital, some CD's & some Vinyl, I have Rock Blues Soul jazz Pop but Id say about 700 are progressive rock bands, mostly from the 70's but some neo prog (90's onwards), I had loads of British prog albums as thats where the genre started in 1969, by bands like Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis Floyd etc and someone introduced me to European prog bands like Eloy, Anyones Daughter, Apoteosa, Asgard, PFM, Maxophone etc etc this then led to me seeking out bands from all over the world, USA bands like Rush, Starcastle, Aussie bands Like Sebastian Hardy and Ayers Rock, bands from latin America and Russia.
Im just listening to a German band called Violet District, which is neo (later not 70's) but very good.
Probably the weirdest band name I have is an album by a Venezuelan band called Pig farm On The Moon :)

I usually download all of my albums (not very proud of it). I do own about 10-15 CD's like the new Beach Boys album and I'm planning on buying more in the future. I also own two Vinyls, 'A Nice Pair' by Pink Floyd (their first two albums) and a crappy-sounding recording of a few live Beatles songs.

I own about 210-220 albums, mostly from 60's well-known bands. My collection expands weekly.

I usually read loads of reviews before purchasing an album, so the only bad albums I own are by my favourite bands, usually either for having a complete collection or just out of curiosity.

My first album was either 'Sgt. Pepper' or 'White Album', I can't really remember.

The most listened albums for this summer were 'That's Why God Made The Radio' by The Beach Boys, 'In An Aeroplane Over The Sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel (got it three days ago - which makes it my latest purchase - and already 7 listens), the 4 Velvet Underground albums, Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black' and Love's 'Da Capo'.

Well, I'm too lazy to count, but all my cds are on I Tunes and that is 22 days worth of music, of which about 40% is classical, 50% Rock, 4% Jazz 5% Blues and 1% other stuff. There are a few downloads in there.

Years ago I owned a lot of vinyl, mostly 60s and 70s rock with some Classical.  I sold it all before I went into the Air Force in 1983.  I started building up a cd collection when I got out of the Air Force in 1987.

My first album was either Rubber Soul or the Monkees first album, I don't remember.

My most recent cd purchase was The Dave Clark Five: The Hits (Bonus Track Version), which was an I Tunes download.

Most cd purchases are through Amazon.

I'm not sure what my worst record was-I liked them all!

Weirdest might have been Ummagumma-but it was a good kind of weird!

If you've got everything in iTunes, just click on the "Grid" section, and the number of the albums will be shown on the bottom bar. (in case you didn't know)

Love that one! Especially 'Sysyphus' and 'Several Species of Small Furry Animals...". Never been too crazy about the one side live and one side studio idea though. I think they would've worked better as separate albums.

'In An Aeroplane Over The Sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel (got it three days ago - which makes it my latest purchase - and already 7 listens)

This is honestly one of the worst albums that I own. I bought this CD maybe not even a year ago due to everybodys rave reviews and I cant stomach it. I've spun it probably 10 times and each time i've been rewarded with an agonizing listening experience. Shame too, because I had such high hopes for it. To each their own.

I probably have 2 to 3 thousand CD's, very few albums, and a small digital collection. If I lived somewhere that had fast internet connection, i'd be all over the digital thing. As it is, I still like to own the CD for hardcopy purposes.

60's sunshine pop/psych is my true love. I'm always in search for that diamond in the rough, but usually end up on the losing end. My last purchase was the 69' release 'Resurrection' by the Aerovons. I absolutely love the song 'World Of You' and the Aerovons were given the American Beatle title so I bought it. Its not very good. Nothing reached the creativity of 'World Of You', but there are a ton of songs that they copied Beatle related themes from. The song 'Resurrection' is basically 'Across The Universe' put down in a different manner. The album as a whole is a loss for me and I find myself trying again.

The Aerovons-Resurrection

My first album was the Beatles 62' to 66' red album that I stole from my sister when I was 7 years old. I still have it.

My favorite bands besides the Beatles would be groups like The Pretty Things, Kansas, Kinks, Love, Moody Blues, Zombies, Buckinghams, etc,,,.

I forgot about the grid view since I hardly use it.  665 albums.

I own several original CDs and some cassettes and vinyls, but I have most of my music as mp3 files since most bands I like are hard to find here in Argentina. I'm a selective music collector more than a completist, so I look for valuable records from different bands instead of having complete discographies. All my music is from the 1960's and the 1970's albums I have are also related to old 1960's artists. I've made three DVDs containing a prolix collection of albums in mp3 format (with all the album covers in jpg). The first two DVDs (Rock of the 60's 1 & 2) contain my very favourite albums, and the third one (More Rock of the 60's) contains other important records from that time. I'm only interested in listening to music on mp3's now. So long as I can hear it I don't mind how and it's just so much more convenient to have it on mp3s. Unike vinyl and c.d and tape I can also back it all up on an ext. hard drive so if anything happens to my laptop like it get's stolen or crashes badly then I won't lose my collection.  I kept a few vinyl albums as antiques and basically ornaments for sentimental reasons but I was living at my parents house and when I left in haste after an argument with my dad and threw all my invyl albums in the bin. I've only got one slice of vinyl a Morrissey single which I'm going to keep. It luckily just happens to be my fav solo Morrissey song.

Hombre, you have a very nice collection and great tastes in music. I enjoyed about every album you've recommended to me. I own a lot of albums from your list, and another lot has been on my wishlist. Could you give me your opinion on these?

Grateful Dead - American Beauty
There was a great TV show called 'Freaks and Geeks', where the album was mentioned in one of its episodes and represented some sort of a life-changing moment in the protagonist's life. That got me really interested.

Love - Four Sail
I enjoy their first 3 albums a lot, but never went any furtherer.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - So Far
'Woodstock' got me interested in this band.

The Mamas & The Papas - 16 Of Their Greatest Hits
Saw them at the 'Monterey Pop Festival '67' and they were great. Is the greatest hits better than their proper albums?

I have about 3,000 original CDs and 1,700 records (singles + LPs). Most of it is 60s pop, punk/hardcore and alternative rock. My collection is not expanding that fast anymore, I'm fairly satisfied now with what I've got. I buy my music mostly in record stores, sometimes at record fairs, sometimes online and because I write music reviews I also get a lot for free. My first album was the LP 'Elvis in Hollywood' by Elvis Presley, which I bought when I was about eight or nine. The latest album I got was the 'Our Darkest Days Live' CD + DVD by Ignite.

Thanks 5th Beatle, I'll give you my opinion on those records.

Grateful Dead - American Beauty
There was a great TV show called 'Freaks and Geeks', where the album was mentioned in one of its episodes and represented some sort of a life-changing moment in the protagonist's life. That got me really interested.

I'm not a big fan of the Grateful Dead but that album (released in 1970) is highly recommendable. It's basically a Folk/Country Rock record but it will give you more than what you'd expect of those genres. Some of my favourite songs are "Box Of Rain", "Sugar Magnolia", "Candyman", "Ripple" and "Truckin'". Their previous album, Workingman's Dead, released earlier the same year, is not as impressive but it's also good and has the same acoustic spirit.

Quote
Love - Four Sail
I enjoy their first 3 albums a lot, but never went any furtherer.

That album was released in 1969 when all the original members of Love, except for the great Arthur Lee, had left the band; so the album was recorded by the new lineup. The result was quite different than the Folk/Psychedelic sound of their previous (and most famous) three albums, since it's mostly an Acid Rock record which seems to be inspired by bands like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I've listened to other material that came later (like False Start), but I don't think it's as good; my advice to Love fans is to get Four Sail after having listened to their three classic albums.

Quote
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - So Far
'Woodstock' got me interested in this band.

So Far is actually a compilation album with songs included on their first two albums: Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969) and Deja Vu (1970). I've listened to those records but I think that the best material is included in this compilation which besides contains two sides from a non-album single that are among my very favourite songs of the band ("Ohio" and "Find The Cost Of Freedom"). I guess that you know that "Woodstock" is a song written by Joni Mitchell; she actually made the nice drawing of the album cover.

I like the Mamas & the Papas but I never felt pushed to look for their original albums; so I cannot tell you about them. But their songs and especially their vocals are very pleasant, so I recommend you at least to get a greatest hits collection as I did.
