According to all Beatles books and trivia websites, the only place where the trumpet ending on Penny Lane was located was on the USA promo single.
-
That was David Mason on the piccolo trumpet. I've read that too. I heard the USA promo version for the first time in the early 80s when I bought The Beatles Rarities album.
-
Which year was the trumpet ending of Penny Lane first heard in the United Kingdom?
1. 1967
2. 1980
3. 1996
Pick a year, any year.
-
I never heard it in the UK.

1967. Everyone in Studio 2 at Abbey Road heard it. And Abbey Road Studios is in the UK.

Oooh. Clever that!

Great answer, guys. Well done.

The Penny Lane video didn't have the piccolo trumpet ending...

I heard this version for the first time when I bought the mail order release "The Beatles Box" in 1980. I recall being quite surprised and impressed at some of the "new" (to my ears) mixes which appeared on this eight record set.

So... why did they cut that beautiful trumpet ending?
Somebody didn't like it? It perfectly fits in!
-
Where were the Penny Lane US promo copies sent out to since the extra trumpet blast is on them? Downtown or somewhere that were floating around?

They were sent to radio stations.

Downtown was recorded by Petula Clark in 1964. I have an original 45 and it stays securely on my turntable.

The version on the 1980's US Rarities album is an edit, it is not genuine. The only place to find the true version is on the actual promo.
-
Gary, you're absolutely right. Over the years since I bought the album new, I forgot what was written on the back cover:
Side two
1. "Penny Lane" Stereo, new version compiled from the German true stereo version with the US promotional mono version's extra piccolo trumpet solo added onto the ending
Thank you for bringing this up. Fortunately we have the original promo right here on this page.

The version on the "Beatles Box" 1980 8-LP collection was also the US Rarities edit rather than the original promo one.
-
WCBS-FM in New York City tends to alternate playing the two stereo versions with and without the piccolo trumpet ending.
-
I think it's because it sounded bad just like RM11.

Daniel, by "RM11" I know you're referring to the US mono promo mix with the piccolo trumpet ending. Perhaps The Beatles listened to the various remixes and settled on the mix without the trumpet ending (RM14 UK mono mix). That was their preference and not indicative of the trumpet ending sounding bad.
Personally, I'm happy that both versions exist for our listening pleasure. Looking at my post on May 31 last year, in retrospect I cannot recall if I might have indeed heard the promo on the radio back in 1967. I purchased the stereo Magical Mystery Tour LP when it was released. The first time I definitively remember hearing the trumpet ending version was when I purchased The Beatles Rarities LP in 1980 thirteen years later.
As far as my own personal preference, I like the piccolo trumpet ending version better. It's a piccolo trumpet dénouement.

You're right, mate. By the way, I think the cover of the promo copies is either yellow or green.

I just discovered on the "Collector's Items" (Unreleased Capitol Album/Released by Dr. Ebbetts http://www.bootlegzone.com/album.php?name=SPRO-9463§ion=1 (http://www.bootlegzone.com/album.php?name=SPRO-9463§ion=1)) that the RM11 is in stereo. I am wondering if I actually have the original (mono) mix. I have the US Rarities, but as we discussed that is a fake.
If I make a fold down mix of the stereo, would that be true?

So, does no one have an answer?

I don't think so, Gary.

I haven't got a clue.

What is that based on Daniel?

Nothing. I think RM11 is mono.

Yes, it's mono.

Oh, I almost forgot! I know someone who recorded the trumpet ending. David Mason.
Yes, it's mono.

Nothing. I think RM11 is mono.
I didn't say RM11 wasn't mono. On the bootleg I was referring to, all of the references say it is RM11. I know it is a contradiction that says it is stereo, I understand that. So if I took that mix, and folded it down to mono, is that the genuine mix?
-
Maybe.

Guys, do you know what I wish? I wish the trumpet ending of Penny Lane was heard in true stereo instead of the Rarities version.

Think of it this way, Daniel. It's just one trumpet and it's right in the middle.
-
Since Penny Lane was first released on February 17 1967, how come it was already released in America on February 13 1967 as in four days earlier? And another thing. How come the books about the Beatles say something about when the trumpet solo was lacked from the very end of the song?
