Oh, I remember being a 10-11 year old boy and listening to California Dreamin' all the time. I loved that song and I still like it.
They were pretty good. What a shame about Mama Cass's dead. Was that tragic or comedy? I don't know.  ::)

The ham sandwhich thing is a myth. She died of a heart attack. So I guess tragedy wins.

This is the original version of 'California Dreamin'' by Barry McGuire (of 'Eve of Destruction' fame), with The Mamas & The Papas on backing vocals.

I heard this version, BARRY McGUIRE'S vocals just ruins the song. The music sounds exactly the same as THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS version. I used to think that this song was a MAMAS AND THE PAPAS song, hear it for yourself.

It is the same music. John and Michelle Phillips originally wrote the song for McGuire and sang backing vocals on his version. Afterwards they decided to take the song back, so they recorded their own lead vocals over the original backing track from McGuire's version. I do like McGuire's version, I think his raw voice works well for the song.

I haven't heard McGuire's version in years, THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS version would become the version that everyone is familiar with. I may be wrong but McGuire's version, with the single vocal, doesn't really give the California vibe that is needed. THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS version, with the complete harmonies, gives the California vibe and sound which would become THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS trademark sound.

I like it too.  Bob Dylan might have sung it like that.  But Barry McGuire beat him to it.   ;)

I wish that I could like the McGuire version like you do but it lacks the full harmonies that are in the MAMAS AND THE PAPAS verson.

I like The Mamas and The Papas version a whole lot more, BF.  It's Denny Doherty's magnificent tenor voice that makes this song.

THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS were known for perfect harmonies, Denny Doherty's tenor voice just complimented the rest of the band perfectly. What more can I say. I think that we should start a MOODY BLUES and 5TH DIMENSION threads, what do you think?

Hi Mairi! CASS ELLIOT is not as respected as she should be because THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS did not get the recognition that they truly deserved. Take care.

Rolling Stone Magazine: Is that a true story about a pipe falling on your head …

Cass Elliot: It’s true, I did get hit on the head by a pipe that fell down and my range was increased by three notes. They were tearing this club apart in the [Virgin] Islands, revamping it, putting in a dance floor. Workmen dropped a thin metal plumbing pipe and it hit me on the head and knocked me to the ground. I had a concussion and went to the hospital. I had a bad headache for about two weeks and all of a sudden I was singing higher. It’s true. Honest to God.

Or so the story goes.   :)

I've always liked them but I hate the recording technology that was used at the time.  I don't think any remasters have been done of their work.  Cass and Michelle usually sound so tinny; I don't hear any bass in Cass's voice either.  Don't the Mamas' voices typically sound kind of shrill?

Hopefully, someone will try to enhance their sound someday.
