I don't feel like I'm really qualified to post here but it does seem like the best place to show what I bought today:

What a lovely instrument. Congratulations.
You play or are learning?
-
Thanks, Moog. I learned to play a bit when I was an early childhood education major in college but I will have to relearn. That was a long time ago, before they even taught education majors how to use computers!

That's a nice Autoharp, Kelley. Oscar Schmidt makes them right. Congratulations!
John Sebastian has a nice instructional DVD for the 15-chord Autoharp (like mine) to help refresh your memory.

You'll have more variety of chords with your 21-chord Autoharp.
Pretty soon, you'll be able to do this...

Thanks, Barry. I think I'd like to order that DVD. But I don't know...I'd be awfully nervous playing in front of John Sebastian. ;D

ha2ha I'll be happy if I can learn Frère Jacques, the first song in the easiest one of the books that came with it. But before that, there's some tuning that needs to be done. That will be a challenge too but at least it came with the tool. I have a lot to learn!
-
Yeah. Tuning takes a while. You'll need a good chromatic tuner.
Then you'll sound like June Carter Cash's mom...

Say hi to that dancer in the striped top for me, Kelley.

You're almost as goofy as Zal was, Barry! But he was cute and I feel bad about how things ended up for him.

Much better to learn autoharp than computers ;)
Enjoy relearning. Before long you'll be sitting in front of a roaring fire, strumming away and singing about something romantic.
-
Maybe not singing this though...

ha2ha No, there's nothing romantic about any of that song! I've always meant to watch that movie. I put it away many times when I was a re-shelver, aka a page, at my former library job and thought it looked funny.

It is quite funny if a little more low key than Spinal Tap.
-
Spinal Tap? Oh, I see. Lumbar puncture, between L3 and L4
-
Wow! I had no idea an auto harp could be played like that. He's very talented.
-
He's a virtuoso. He was playing the melody and background accompaniment at the same time!

I hope you're having a good time relearning Autoharp, Kelley.

If you believe in magic don't bother to choose
If it's jug band music or rhythm and blues
Just go and listen it'll start with a smile
It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try
Your feet start tapping and you can't seem to find
How you got there, so just blow your mind

How are you makin' out with that chorded zither, Kelley?

Well, Barry....I'm afraid it's been languishing in its case. Life has been a bit on the hectic side here but I am hoping for a quiet weekend to come along so I can get to it. Tonight, though, I've really enjoyed all the videos you shared. I agree that The Lovin' Spoonful's version of Younger Girl is best. That song always stops me in my tracks; I love it.
-
Yeah. Younger Girl is some song alright. Sounds good on guitar too...

Yeah, it does. I like what he did there in that video from last year. Eddie's Attic looks like a fun place. But I bet it's really hot in Decatur, GA. ;D
-
He bluesed it up a bit there with a picking technique similar to what I learned from Ian Buchanan (although John Sebastian is using three fingers rather than the two-finger style Ian taught me). But remember, he was part of the same Greenwich Village scene Ian Buchanan, David Von Ronk, Bob Dylan and others were in during the early 1960s...
