Who would've sung it better?
« on: November 17, 2009, 12:06:09 AM »

there's a quote from John Lennon, and he basically said that he could've sung 'Oh! Darling' better than Paul.
What do you think?
Paul sang it tremendously good, but as i imagine John singing it, it sounds cool, but not that awesome :-\

I think that Paul sang it better than John would have. He just has that rock and roll voice that John doesn't. (ie She's A Woman, I'm Down, etc)

I don't think that emmi_luvs_beatles meant that John didn't have a rock 'n' roll voice, just not that kind of rock 'n' roll voice.

IMO, Paul's vocal in Oh! Darling is amazing. I don't think John could better it and they'd probably have to change the key in order for him to sing it.

I totally agree with Emmi (not just because I love Paul). John did have a fantastic voice, but I think Paul's generally deeper range was better suited for Oh! Darling.

I think that Paul sings this song extremely well. I am sure that John would have sung it wonderfully too and in his own way, but let it be Paul and only Paul.

^ From the other thread there was a great suggestion that Ringo sing Maxwells Silver Hammer.

I think Paul singing Oh! Darling is very possibly one of the best sung songs they ever released. John just doesn't have the range for that kind of ballad. No one could scream like Paul could in the 60's.

I could totally see that, it sounds just like the type of song Ringo would sing! I've always wanted to hear what Something would have sounded like if Paul sung it. He's been pretty good when he performs it as a tribute to George, but imagine how much better it would sound as a 20-something Paul singing it!

I think Paul could've sung almost any of George's Beatles songs, bar the Indian ones. George's voice was not full of range, and Paul could have done them easily.

Stand by for the backlash!

Oh John, John, John... I love you dearly but I don't think ANYONE could have sung Oh Darling better than Paul.

I think John meant it.  And if he recorded it, it would have been a knock-out.  He would have used his Mr Moonlight voice on that one.

I wonder if an open mike at the studio ever picked him up trying.

I would have sung it better than both of them. I'm pretty much the best singer ever, you guys.

apart from a beatles song, i think Paul's recent Dance Tonight would have worked better as
a Ringo song...but hey.

I disagree. I don't think that he even HAD his Mr. Moonlight voice at that time. I've always loved John's voice but there's a big difference between how he sounded in the early days and towards the end. At least to me. He never sounded BAD, just different and not quite as strong.

1969 was nowhere near "towards the end" for John.  He was at the height of his vocal form at that time.  His solo work after this called for a different voice to express his feelings.  He sounded just as good but in a different way.  John had a great rock and roll voice and, I feel, would have performed Oh! Darling well.  Pity he either never did or no tapes have surfaced where he did.

I don't think John would have hit the chorus too good in Oh Darling....I mean it is amongst Macca's top notes in his entire Beatle career. Loved to have heard a version with John doing the verse though and I am sure he would have glided through the chorus somehow, perhaps like Paul does in the anthology version. The track reminds me of You Really Got A Hold On Me in it's style of era....Could just be the big fat A chord. lol
