Title: The 30 Best-Selling Singles of the 1960s
Post by: Wolf on February 17, 2005, 08:14:51 PM

The 30 biggest-selling singles of the 1960s in the USA

1 I Want To Hold Your Hand, Beatles
2 The Ballad Of The Green Berets, Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler
3 Hey Jude, Beatles
4 It`s Now Or Never, Elvis Presley
5 Love Is Blue, Paul Mauriat
6 Harper Valley P.T.A., Jeannie C. Riley
7 I`m A Believer, Monkees
8 I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Marvin Gaye
9 Sugar Sugar, Archies
10 Honey, Bobby Goldsboro
11 Can`t Buy Me Love, Beatles
12 She Loves You, Beatles
13 The Twist, Chubby Checker
14 Crimson And Clover, Tommy James & The Shondells
15 The Letter, Box Tops
16 Aquarias/Let The Sunshine In, Fifth Dimension
17 I Can`t Stop Loving You, Ray Charles
18 I Want You Back, Jackson 5
19 Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, B.J. Thomas
20 Get Back, Beatles
21 In The Year 2525, Zager & Evans
22 Ode To Billie Joe, Bobbie Gentry
23 Are You Lonesome Tonight, Elvis Presley
24 To Sir With Love, Lulu
25 Daydream Believer, Monkees
26 Theme From A Summer Place, Percy Faith Orchestra
27 Love Child, Diana Ross & The Supremes
28 Hello Dolly, Louis Armstrong
29 Green Tambourine, Lemon Pipers
30 I Feel Fine, Beatles

While the 1950s belonged to Elvis, the 60s just as surely danced to the Beatles` tunes. The Fab Four have six out of the these 30 top sellers, including the number one I Want To Hold Your Hand, which sold 5 million copies in the USA alone. Considering that the 60s are remembered as the decade in which British artists conquered America, it`s perhaps a little surprising that apart from the Beatles` discs, the only British record showing here is Lulu`s To Sir With Love.

It's easy to see that other than the Beatles no other froup had a strangle hold on the 60s!

Not really.  It's a great showing for The Beatles considering their years of activity during the 60s.  Those other songs were tremendous hits when they were released.

#13 The Twist, Chubby Checker....the only record to hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 twice.  It did that in 1960 and 1962.

Funny you should mention this. I was listening to Pandora tonight and "Last Kiss" played. I decided it was time to hit the skip button but it got me wondering what was up with all those depressing songs back then?

Who knows, Kelley?  Here's a double suicide song from 1962 to top it all off...

Now that's a much nicer song to end the evening with.  :)
