I reckon the Beach Boys are very over-rated.

(I cast my rod out, waiting for the bite)

No, seriously: I sometimes listen to the Beach Boys for over 10 hours a day (I've got my own office at work, with a CD player), and I just never get tired of them. I just still can't believe how good they were.

If you take the Pet Sounds Sessions box set for instance... It's got the backing track as well as an capella mix of each song, and even listening to just the vocals or just the music is an amazing experience, and if you combine them... Wow... That's just mind-blowing.

I never cared much for the Beach Boys until 2 years ago, but then I started really listening to them... And now I'm more addicted than a junkie to drugs.

I  heard somewhere that they did a study and the Beach Boys turned out to be some of the most complex music ever written. Just the harmonies and intrumentations are enough to blow your mind.

I agree whole-heartedly.

And I agree with Mairi, nobody in pop (except for George Martin and the Beatles) were doing such sophisticated instrumentation and arrangement.

I would note two possible influences on Brian: 1) the Four Freshmen for vocals, and 2) exotica music for instrumentation--both of which were unusual and for their genres complex.

I'd go:

1) Beach Boys: Pet Sounds

2) Beatles: Revolver

3) Dylan: Blonde on Blonde

4) Van: Astral Weeks

5) VU and Nico

6) Kinks: Village Green Preservation Society

7) Piper at the Gates of Dawn

8) The Band

9) Jimi Hendrix Experience--debut album

10) Jefferson Airplane: Surrealistic Pillow

I'd have to say:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

The Small Faces - Ogdens Nut Gone Flake

The Kinks - The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society

The Doors - The Doors

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

Sam Cooke - Night Beat

Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

These are just my personal immediate favourites I'd class as quint-essential 60's albums.

I didn't read others posts, yet it's funny that there are many agreed 60's classics. I tried to do it without reading others but looking back I see how similar tastes can be, either that or there really is a classic that can't be questioned.

I'd give an honourable mention to Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention too.

D'oh!

If I knock out Revolver, that gives me room to put in the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gilded Palace of Sin.

Honorable Mentions:

Byrds, Younger than Yesterday

Buffalo Springfield Again

Otis Redding--either Otis Blue or Dock of the Bay.

Stones--Let it Bleed or Beggar's Banquet.

Syd Barrett, Madcap Laughs

Love, Forever Changes

Ventures, Knock Me out or one of the earlier Dolton albums

Well, if I'd make a serious list there would probably be one or two Doors albums in my list. Maybe some Motown stuff too. But I'm pretty sure I'd have at least five Beach Boys albums.

Nice picks, TK.  I thought about the Zombies.  The Hollies is an interesting pic too.  I love the Who, but can't think of the definitive 60s album.  I like Sell-Out, alot.  But Who's Next would be my pick, only it's 1970, I think.

The Doors belong too.  First album or LA Woman.

Hmm. Don't know if I can list ten. Here's some I can think of that definitely made an impact. Not in order either.

Bob Dylan-Highway 61

Jimi Hendrix-Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Rolling Stones-I don't know!! Something early, but after they got away from imitating the Beatles!

The Who-The Who Sings My Generation

Led Zeppelin-Zeppelin I and beyond!!

Nirvana-Nevermind!!!

The Doors-The Doors

Sex Pistols-Nevermind the Bullocks...

Clash-London Calling

Ramones-Which album??

PINK FLOYD-Dark Side of the Moon

My mind's not working correctly, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

Yeah...

People who don't like the Beach Boys...

I think we should just feel sorry for them and pray for their souls...
