Vinyl Continues Unlikely Recovery, According To New Numbers

For vinyl records, the tables are continuing to turn. Earlier this month Nielsen released its 2011 Music Industry report, and there were plenty of newsworthy takeaways–industrywide album sales were up for the first time since 2004, while Adele’s 21 was the best-selling album, moving an astonishing 5.8 million copies in the U.S. alone.Lost amid the thicket of stats, however, was the fact that vinyl continued its unlikely comeback in 2011. For the fourth year in a row, more LPs were sold than in any other year in the SoundScan era; last year, sales soared to 3.9 million, up from 2.8 million LPs in 2010. Of the 228 million physical albums sold in 2011, nearly 2% were vinyl. Two-thirds of those albums were purchased at independent music stores. The top-selling vinyl album wasn’t much of a surprise–The Beatles’ Abbey Road moved 41,000 units to claim the honor.
