Do you think that I'll Cry Instead used to be added for A Hard Day's Night movie?
-
What do you think?
-
I think the answer is yes.
-
of course. they wrote a bunch of songs for the movie and those rejected ended up on side 2. simple as that.
-
You know for some reason, I'll Cry Instead was rejected from A Hard Day's Night movie because it's full of bad and violent words. George Martin had an idea about putting this song onto the soundtrack in the US. Right, The Swine?
-
bad and violent words? the beatles? shame on them! and where exactly are these bad and violent words?
-
They're on http://www.dmbeatles.com/song.php?song=126. (http://www.dmbeatles.com/song.php?song=126.) In fact, I'll show them to you since it was made into an extended version before adding it to the film.
I've got every reason on earth to be mad
'Cause I've just lost the only girl I had
And if I could get my way
I'd get myself locked up today
But I can't so I cry instead * (These are the bad/violent words)
I've got a chip on my shoulder that's bigger than my feet
I can't talk to people that I meet
And if I could see you now
I'd try to make you sad somehow
But I can't so I cry instead
Don't want to cry when there's people there
I get shy when they start to stare
I'm gonna hide myself away, ay hay
But I'll come back again someday
And when I do you'd better hide all the girls
I'm gonna break their hearts all 'round the world
Yes, I'm gonna break them in two
And show you what your loving man can do
Until then I'll cry instead
(Notice that the first verse, bridge and third verse are sung again)
So what do you think?
-
I think they're not bad and violent words at all. Not even to 1964 standards.
-
Maybe it was more to do with the Beatles squeaky, clean image at the time and they didnt want them to fall out of grace with the media and public. Who knows. All that stuff was stupid back then anyways.
-
Anyway, I think the unedited version of I'll Cry Instead which is 2:06 was used on the original film print of A Hard Day's Night since I discovered it on here.

But it wasn't used anymore. Right, guys?

You're the expert. You tell us.
-
Good idea. Oh, I almost forgot. I uploaded a video on YouTube when this song was supposed to be intended for the film since it's the long version that matches a scene. I'll show it to you.
The Beatles - I'll Cry Instead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLxc7jBCXgM#)
-
So you're assuming that the song was mixed and edited into this longer version to match the length of the scene it was intended for.
-
Yes, but I think director Richard Lester didn't like this song. Right, Bobber?
-
Why not?
-
Because this song was too complicated. But I know a song that was sung twice in the film.
-
Complicated? On the contrary!
-
Complicated? The song is filler at best.
To be honest, I cant believe theres a couple threads dedicated to it, but whatever floats your boat.
-
Come to think of it, it might not have been included because it just flat out sucks. Besides 'When I get Home', its easiest the worst song on the album (and one could argue its worse than When I Get Home).
Thankfully I'll Cry Instead is only 1:46 long.
-
And I think the original version of I'll Cry Instead is 2:06. By the way, I think we're good.

I particularly liked this bit ...
"Thanks go out to Daniel Celano for the original request for the long I’ll Cry Instead."
Hey Daniel Celano - your plan for world domination is slowly coming together! ;D
There can't be many Beatles sites left untouched now by your quest to discover the truth behind the long version of I'll Cry Instead!
-
Go for it Daniel!
