Cause after October 20, it'll go straight to the trashcan...

Disgusting.
I've lost all respect for Ringo now. If he's too busy to take a few seconds to sign his name for the people who have helped to put him where he is today, then I'll be too busy to sing his praises in the future.
'Peace and love' also means respect, and it seems he's lost that particular virtue for us. As I have for him.
-
Maybe he's ill.
Maybe he's fed up of seeing his signature on ebay.
Maybe he's thinking of retiring.
It's his decision and I think we should respect it.
He's given us a lot and doesn't owe us anything.

Fine, if he's ill, maybe he should say so. If he's thinking of retiring, he should say so. But to say 'I'm not signing anything else, don't send fan mail' and not give a reason for it is a slap in the face to his fans.
Yes, he's given us a lot but we've also given him fame, fortune and respect. Life is a two-way stream.
-
He's well and beyond paying his dues. If the guy needs a break from it, Let It Be. heheh
-
When I first heard about this, it made me wonder if Ringo was ill too, or if he is having some personal problems at home. Plus, he is getting older now and it's probably getting very tiring to sign tons of mail. It would have been nice if he explained his reasons for his decision, but it could be something personal and even stars need their privacy. I doubt that he is doing this to be disrespectful to fans. I just hope all is well with Ringo!

Put yourself in Ringo's shoes. I am sure after all those years, you'd get a bit tired of it also.
-
So you're all happy to accept what he says without any reason?

I'm not happy about this, but I am willing to wait and see if he will offer an explanation in the future.
Since none of us know his reasons for this, I would rather give Ringo the benefit of the doubt instead of being upset with him.

Fair enough, but it's the way he put it. 'I'm warning you all with peace and love', 'it'll be tossed'.
And I'm upset with him because I've bought his records, seen his concerts and supported him through the years. You guys may not feel betrayed but I certainly do.
-

I'm really sorry you're feeling so bad. I am sure there are other Ringo fans that feel the same way you do. :( I just hope Ringo will someday provide a satisfactory explanation for this.
Have you ever tried writing to him to get him to sign something? If so, did he reply?
-
I've written to both Paul and Ringo a few times over the years but never had a reply. I'm not too sore about it because I realise they get lots of fan mail, but it's the principle. From Ringo's message, he gave me the impression that he just couldn't be arsed any more, and I'm not even mentioning his recent reactions to Liverpool.
Anyway, meh. If that's his position then that's his position. If he's ill then I'll help myself to a very large slice of humble pie, but if he's adopted this attitude because he doesn't care any more then I'm eBay bound to sell my Ringo stuff.

You're warning us with peace and love? Can you do that?
-
It never occurred to me that he would answer mail in the first place, so I guess it's not an issue for me. However, I still don't think it's something to get worked up over. I'd be tired of it too if people had been sending me stuff for 50 years. At least he's given everyone fair warning. Besides, he didn't say he'll never sign another autograph in his life, just not in the mail. I'll worry about his attitude when he starts hitting fans at the shows or something. He says he has things to do, and I respect that. No big deal.
-
What an odd thing to do. People will send him stuff anyways. Of course, as Ringo says he will toss it but I imagine that is what happens to most fan mail for alot of celebrities anyways.
-
He just needs a better publicist.
Don't we all!
-
Hey everybody,
Beatles fans in Liverpool are outraged by Ringo's renouncing fan mail and autographs.
Tearing a strip off him here...
www.clickliverpool.com
Didn't need to go on the record to say these things, could have just politely declined
What do you think?
-
It's all over BBC now. Someone or something has wound him up.
-
Wow... just read about it... my first reaction was sadness, but I'm gonna go for the "wait and see" thing and hope that everything's alright...
-
By the way, he looks terribly old all of a sudden.
-
Three different threads on the subject merged, but with that operation we have lost the poll. Let me know if you want it back.
-
I agree with several posts, generally that he's no spring chicken, he may very well be ill, why should he tell us that?, he's come across as rather abrupt in various interviews recently, and maybe he's had something unpleasant in the post recently and needs to put a stop to this.
I think it's rather presumptuous to post stuff to someone in the public eye and expect them to sign it, and post it back. Why on earth should he do that, because he played drums in the 1960's with a rather famous band??
Also, he may be hacked off that people are selling the signed things on ebay, etc, how can he tell in the post whether it's a genuine fan wanting a signature on a treasured souvenir, or someone making a quick buck? My sympathy lies with Ringo.
Although, as I said, I think it came across rather harshly.
-
i don't know why he dosen't want any more mail, and nore does anybody else. maybe he
keeps getting messages about macca & mills and what he thought and he can't be bothered
with that! :P anyway, i hope our Ringo is very well & not ill! god fobbid! :-/
-
It`s very sad. I think he shouldn`t have said it in the first place, cause fans could be offended and a lot of them were. Better not to say anything at all and stop signing for a while.
-
Well.............I was kinda shocked. But the way I look at it, Ringo is a 68 year old man who doesn't want to be know as "Ex-Beatle Ringo"........just my thought...........
-
Does anyone know an adress anyways to write Ringo?
-
By the way, he looks terribly old all of a sudden.
I thought the same thing as I watched that. Still looks good for his age but he looks alot older than he appeared to look even a few months ago.

"Dear Beatles Fans and Friends,
Most of you have already seen the video that Ringo sent out yesterday
regarding a cut-off date of 20 October for autographed articles, photos,
etc. After 20 October, Ringo will not be signing items mailed to him.
The video of Ringo explaining this to his fans comes across a little...
abrupt. But after a great deal of investigation into why he released
this video, I found that Ringo had been graciously offering to sign
anything that people sent to him. And the overwhelming TON of things
that he had received was mind-boggling.
On one fan site, there was a list of things that people had sent in and
then a list of complaints. Here is a typical complaint, "I sent in two
photos, one set of drumsticks, one t-shirt and one sweatshirt. The
drumsticks were returned unsigned, and one photo was unsigned."
The complaints went on and on. No one said a word of thanks for the
things that were signed. And my mind is spinning with the image of Ringo
signing endless t-shirts, sweatshirts, drumsticks, and who knows what
else.
It was extremely generous for Ringo to offer to sign so many items for
his fans, but I imagine that when he offered to do this, he never
dreamed that people would take advantage of him by sending so many
things and expecting so much.
And it appears that he has reached his limit.
Bottom line... since August of 1962, Ringo has lived in a fishbowl.
We've watched every little thing he's done... we've commented,
critiqued, observed, and either cheered or booed. And now it's 2008...
almost 2009. Enough already. Let the man have some well-deserved time to
enjoy life. He had given us almost 50 years of smiles, songs, and
shenanigans. Now let's be gracious and give him the rest of his life.
Before 20 October... instead of a "gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude (or as
George would have phrased it, "I, me, me, mine!"), let's do something
for Ringo. Let's all write to him at the address below ONLY TO SAY THANK
YOU... thank you for the joy of your music, your positive attitude
through the years, your love toward the fans, your Ringoisms, your
headshakes and smiles, your humor, yourself. Let's send him a note to
say we love you, and we support you.
If Ringo is feeling overwhelmed, taken advantage of, besieged... then
let's give back to him some of the joy he has given us.
Please send a word of thanks or support (and NOTHING TO SIGN) to:
Ringo Starr
1st Floor
90 Jermyn Street
London SW1Y6JD

And please pass the word on to everyone you know. I'd love to see his
mailbox full of thanks and love, not requests and complaints.

^Thank you for that. :)
-
Could it be that he "warns us" with peace and love as in: "you wouldn't want your expensive new Ringo shirt to be trown out, right?".. ::)
I don't think he means bad either. He just couldn't be all happy and cheerful when trying to put this message across.
But I hope he's not ill! :-/

ringo who???????
-
Thank you Paulrus for putting things into perspective. Sounds like he was totally overwhelmed and taken advantage of. Poor guy- beat up for trying to be nice... One thing he could do to solve the situation might be to sit down once a month or so and just sign a bunch of drumsticks and drum skins and stuff and just sell them on his site for 25-50 bucks or whatever. That way people could still have their official autographs, and Ringo could limit the amount of stuff he signs and still make a little cash as well. Just a thought. Probably wrong.

I think that's a great idea, and fans would enjoy that (or at least I would). However, I don't think Ringo would price his autographed stuff so low. At his concert, I saw his autographed drumheads being sold for the Lotus Foundation and they were going for $700-800 USD. Then again, they were probably so pricey because they were being sold for charity.
-
LOL... yeah, he probably wouldn't price things that low. I was thinking in Pete Best terms. I think I paid about $20 for my PB signed drumsticks. Anyway, I could see Ringo pricing stuff at $75- $100 for sticks and $150 - $200 for drum heads and still be reasonable and not out-price fans. I'm probably still dreaming, but if he kept the price low he could undercut the Ebay people, devalue his signature, and put a serious dent in any Ebay problem he might have. A win for everyone. Then Paul could do the same thing. ;)
-
Thanks for clearing that up! I can only imagine how he feels. I respect his thoughts and wishes. I think I will send him a card of thanks. He probably won't read it, but I think that is a great idea.
It is so funny because today at work I had a number of people approach me and say they heard on the news what Ringo had said...and so that had to make sure I knew ;D
Rock on Ringo Starr!!
-
I Am The Paulrus, thanks a huge bunch for your post :)
Probably weird of me to say this, but that situation kinda had me worried (and sad about people's reactions), but reading some of the stuff round here made me feel better. Haha, sorry, don't mind my weirdness you guys :B. Let me just agree with something Heather said
Rock on Ringo Starr!!
I second that (smiley)
-
Methinks I will be writing Ringo a letter of thanks :)
-
ringo knows we love him...just think of it this way since the early 60s he has read and written his fan mail...if he wants a break let him have it...he will change his mind tho...he will miss the circus.. ;D

I'm with Alexis and Cubanheel on this. Yes, Ringo needs a better publicist. His message, in tone and presentation, is entirely in keeping with my experience of Ringo being Ringo-- blunt, not sweet-talking (that's Paul's line)-- and it can come across negatively, which is why people keep chopping the head off his shrub and taking other revenge for their umbrage.
For my part, I'm inclined to say, Ringo is old, he's been very gracious about this all his life, and I thought it was sweet of him to warn his fans that he wouldn't sign any more stuff, so stop sending him stuff so it won't get tossed. Just because a person is known and admired does not mean they are at the fans' beck and call. It's a two-way street. If Ringo wants a break, I say, let him! He's earned it.
Peace and love.

Maybe he just wants to be Richard for a while ?

Oh jeez.
-
did you ever send anything to him to get signed? if not, dont complain. if yes, dont complain either.
-
I Am The Paulrus has indeed been very eloquent, but I still stand by my opinion. It could have been handled better.
... although I may have been a bit harsh on the whole 'losing all respect for him' thing.
-
Is it my imagination or is the message in question missing from Ringo's website this evening? I'm not seeing it, but I may be having web issues.
-
I sent my letter to his London office months ago
-
Alright, so which of these addresses is more likely to send something back, like an autograph? 'Cause I'm sending him a letter before noon today (kinda last minute, don't ya think?), and I asked if he could send back an autographed picture or something. So, for anyone who has sent him a letter and gotten something back, which one should I send to? Thanks!

Please tell me your joking? Have you read this thread?
-
^Yes, I know what this thread is all about. I haven't read every inch of it, but I know what it's basically about. I know that Ringo said there was a deadline, but he also said that it was the 20th and that if you have something, send it now. So that's what I'm doing. I just thought I'd come on here and ask anyone if they know which address is more likely to send something back, like maybe if they sent something months or years ago. Yeah, it's unlikely I'll get something, but it's worth a try. Is that what you're trying to say, or what? So what's wrong with what I said?
-
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be hectic. Seems Ringo, the poor soul is desperate for a break from it all but if you can reach him before the deadline (I forgot about the deadline being the 20th) then it's me who mis-read the situation. Peace & Love. :)
-
^Hey, that's alright! No harm done, man! I was also probably reacting to what you said too much. So I'm sorry about that. Peace :)

My take on everything is....did he really need to have all that publicity on being a grumpy old man....why not keep the legend intact for all time of fun loving Ringo...before he had to say all those things about Liverpool and now this.....tut tut...
I hope the reason is only that he is sick of all the mail and not that he is ill or something though....
Bring back nice ringo! :-)
-
he's brassed off about something! :-/
-
Certainly does seem that way lately....
-
yes, apparently telling a fan to f*** off last week in Monaco. :-/
-
Just something about the fanmail business, I've read this article somewhere...
RINGO STARR STATEMENT REGARDING RECENT VIDEO UPDATE ON HIS WEBSITE:
Ringo Starr recently put a video update on his official website asking people not to continue to send fan mail to be signed after October 20. This was in direct response to an inordinate amount of items which have recently appeared for sale on e-bay, and to those that repeatedly send cards and items to be signed.
This message was not aimed at "real fans" and after over 45 yrs of signing we know they will understand. Ringo has always signed items and is in fact the only Beatle to have been doing so.
Ringo also feels strongly that it is a waste of paper and we all should be mindful of our carbon footprint. At the end of the day Ringo wanted to make a message that was clear and to the point and is confident his real fans understand that. That said, the recent response from the media has prompted him to clarify that video.
"How amazed am I to the reaction to my video update. I hope this statement gets as much. Please read this in a mellow way. Peace and love, Ringo."
http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/news/1011noautographs.html
Sorry if it's been posted before by the way, I suppose it's old news being from back in October, but I haven't been in touch with the computer for a while, hehe...
-
Oh my... it's the first time i heard Ringo say something like this except for the "I hated the Philippines" but i don't blame him maybe he is experiencing stress and all of those things. I understand everything perfectly and I still love Ringo :)
-
^Ringo said he hated The Philippines? When, where, why, and/or how?
-
^ The Beatles were treated horribly when they toured in the Philippines. Things got so bad they thought they were going to be killed.
From Wikipedia:
In July 1966, when The Beatles toured the Philippines, they unintentionally snubbed the nation's first lady, Imelda Marcos, who had expected the group to attend a breakfast reception at the Presidential Palace.[68] When presented with the invitation, Brian Epstein politely declined on behalf of the group, as it had never been the group's policy to accept such "official" invitations.[69] The group soon found that the Marcos regime was unaccustomed to accepting "no" for an answer. After the snub was broadcast on Philippine television and radio, all of The Beatles' police protection disappeared. The group and their entourage had to make their way to Manila airport on their own. At the airport, road manager Mal Evans was beaten and kicked, and the band members were pushed and jostled about by a hostile crowd.[70] Once the group boarded the plane, Epstein and Evans were ordered off, and Evans said, "Tell my wife that I love her."[71] Epstein was forced to give back all the money that the band had earned while they were there before being allowed back on the plane.[72]
-
This site goes into more detail (I'm not familiar with this site but hopefully the info is accurate). It also has the Beatles "Anthology" transcript describing the whole matter:
http://991.com/Buy/TopItems/LennonGlasses/Stiffed.aspx
To make matters worse, all security detail assigned to the boys were withdrawn leaving them extremely vulnerable. They were literally kicked and jostled as they left their hotel and totally harassed all the way to the airport. Things were no better there where the airport manager has also removed all security for the Beatles. They went so far as to shut down the power to stop the escalators, forcing the boys to scale several flights of stairs with their own luggage, only to face an angry mob of 200 Filipinos brutally manhandling them! Ringo was literally floored by an uppercut and kicked on the ground. He suffered a sprained ankle as well and had to be helped to the customs area. Mal Evans and Brian Epstein were injured as well. Alf Bicknell suffered a cracked rib and a spinal injury.

How could I forget about this?
My daddy, from The Philippines, says the whole 'bigger that Jesus' got a whole lot of Filipinos angry. And it did get my daddy, a Beatles fan, mad, but he forgave them. =D
My daddy is a good man.
-
awww.... i remember when i fist heard that i began apologizing to John and George because i felt so bad about it. My uncle told me about what the Filipinos had done and i was going crazy when i heard about what they did till now i kept on apologizing you know talk to either John or George in my prayers and say i'm sorry for what they've done they don't know what they were doing at that time..
-
I have a question. ^^
Do you think it would be alright if someone were to just send him fan stuff-- like gifts and such? Not to be signed, of course! ^^ But do ya'll think he'll still accept /stuff/?
My opinion on this?
Good for Ringo!! He's a brand new, perhaps better, man who has new music and deserves to be known for more than the person he was 40 years ago!
-
i do believe that a tiger cannot change his stripes..........and thus i believe ringo still loves us and will be normal again b4 long...remember the year he tracked santa?????he is a fan fanatic...

That's a young Ringo talking to old Ringo. And the whole thing is just stupid. I can't believe people actually got upset over that video. It's just Ringo be straight with his fans. That's a show of RESPECT people. He could be like most rock stars and BS his fans. He could send back form letters or hire some teen to sign every thing. Or he could charge an arm and a leg for his signatures. Instead he chose to be honest! So then he gets bashed? Ugh. People are never happy. No wonder he's so annoyed! He's a guy who's tired of signing crap. So what!
Plus, he's already put in his dues ten times over. I think he's justified in saying enough already.
