I own one, read both, and they are without a doubt the best books written about the group yet, EXCEPT:

This is *serious* musicology, and absolutely 80% of this material goes right over my head or thru my ears.  Yet the parts that are historical or written in English (non-musical) are all accurate and correct (I have found no errors in them yet) and interesting.

Think Ian MacDonald/Timothy White to a hyper musicologist degree.

One would probably have to be a total Beatle fan (or trained musician) to slog thru these, but for those folks I think they will find them rewarding.

Have just borrowed The Quarry Men through Rubber Soul from the library, and have enjoyed what I've read so far. Some of it is very densely written, and I've found I need to read it out loud to myself to follow it properly!! I also think it needs to be read in conjuction with youtube, so that you can hear the different versions of songs. Anyone else read it like this, book in one hand, laptop in the other?

The trouble is that I think the book now needs a youtubeography, some sort of listing of references to listen to/watch alongside.  Anyone agree??

So far I'm having trouble finding the Jan 1969 rehearsals for Get Back, which are mentioned in the book as including busking versions of I lost my little girl, Hot as Sun, I fancy me chances, etc.  Could anyone post a link, or are these unavailable??

Wow! Digging up an old thread in here. I should do some research to answer your question.

Still ploughing through book, good so far, though am still only in Hamburg!! I'd really appreciate any help in the right direction to locate some of the early stuff, it would be so interesting to see (well, hear) what they were like before they were what they became!!!  I've heard all the obvious things, but this book is so tantalising, and youtube is so maddening at times.
