One of those American albums that came from nothing. It's interesting that it had songs from Beatles For Sale released months before in UK plus songs from the B-side of Help! that weren't yet released in UK.

Right.  This is what we had on this album...

Side one

1.Medley: "Kansas City"/"Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" (Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller/Richard Penniman) – 2:30
2."Eight Days a Week" – 2:43
3."You Like Me Too Much" (George Harrison) – 2:34
4."Bad Boy" (Larry Williams) – 2:17
5."I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" – 2:33
6."Words of Love" (Buddy Holly) – 2:10

Side two

1."What You're Doing" – 2:30
2."Yes It Is" – 2:40
3."Dizzy Miss Lizzy" (Williams) – 2:51
4."Tell Me What You See" – 2:35
5."Every Little Thing" – 2:01

All songs by Lennon/McCartney, except where noted.

That's quite a good album. It's got no Ringo songs on it!  ;D

What strikes me most with this album is the absence of really new compositions from Paul.

I never looked at that album in that respect. Hmm, your right, but then again, we all know Paul really didnt hit his stride until around 67' anyways.

I Don't Want To Spoil The Party - How many times did I feel that way at parties?  This song expresses my thoughts at the time precisely but with George Harrison's crisp Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean guitar solo and beautiful vocals by The Beatles.  It's a song that I like as much today as when I first heard it.

Always look forward to your reviews Mr. M! You should be the one doing the main reviews. I cant write near as well as you.  ;)

Thank you tkitna, I appreciate those kind words but you are too hard on yourself there. Your reviews and contributions are among the best on here as far as I'm concerned. I love the diverse views we all have over individual tracks. Each contributor brings their own views to the discussion, it's fascinating.

What strikes me most with this album is the absence of really new compositions from Paul.

If you remove the six cover versions this leaves eight tracks. Whilst 'I'll Follow The Sun' is an early composition, it's still Paul. Every Little Thing and What You're Doing were Paul's, and he had at least a 50% input  on 'Baby's In Black' and 'Eight Days A Week' (perhaps even more than that on the latter).

He is much more evident on Beatles For Sale than he was on A Hard Day's Night, which was very obviously weighted towards John. I always thought Beatles For Sale was a much more balanced album.

Baby's In Black - The Beatles didn't know it at the time, but they wrote some real fine bluegrass music here...

Has anyone noticed that this is kind of a hearbreak album? Apart from the covers, almost every song there seems to be written from a heartbroken guy's perspective. "No Reply", "I'm A Loser", "Baby's In Black" "I'll Follow The Sun", "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" and "What You're Doing". Well, half an album, anyway.  :). Just saying...

Yeah! "Every Little Thing" seems to be out of place then!

Keep in mind it also was their 4th album they released in a 20 month period.  Even with removing covers it was quite prolific writing.  Bound to be peaks and valleys within that time period too.

Hello All,
I am new to this forum - been a Beatles fan for as long as I can remember.
Beatles for Sale, although not their strongest album, has some very unique moments.
My favorite songs are those that evoke certain feelings in me; that is what the Beatles mean to me.
I'll Follow the Sun - although too short and the guitar solo leaves you longing for more, I think is a very pretty song. I put it with I'll Be On My Way from Live at the BBC.
Both have a melancholy feel to them that arouses feelings of longing in me.
I also love their version of Words of Love - Buddy Holly is amazing, but I think they do a fine tribute to him.
What You're Doing I would say my favorite rocker on BFS with a great riff.
Just my thoughts.

Welcome to the Forum, topperking99.   I hope you'll stick around a good long while.

Unrecognized by many of us, that's why we have favorite songs.

Blimey!
The final three or so minutes isn't too bad, where they're actually playing the song - not my cup of tea at all, but I've heard worse.
But that first couple of minutes is something I won't be rushing to listen to again!

Each to their own, and all that though.
