10 Essential Albums
« on: December 29, 2006, 03:19:22 PM »

OK boys and girls. What do you think are the ten most essential albums to have in any collection?

We're not talking your top ten favourites here, more like ten albums that may have changed the face of music.

You do reserve the right to change your mind at a later date. (I probably will).

Here's mine:

1 The Beatles - Revolver
2 Miles Davis - KInd of Blue
3 Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
4 Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 1
5 The Clash - London Calling
6 Roxy Music - Roxy Music
7 Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
8 Radiohead - OK Computer
9 Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
10 Scott Walker - Tilt

Hard  :-/ ... but I probably would include The Doors - The Doors (1967) and Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (1971) -tho I don't like much the later- ... and of Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), instead ...

Which ones to erase from that list ... probably 6, 9 and 10.

But it's just a ten list!!!  :-/  ;D

Cheers mate, you've ruined my weekend. Albums that changed the face of music?? (3 U2 albums Somedude???? ). I have dilemma's - Pet Sounds/Revolver for instance. Pet Sounds introduced a whole new sound to rock, but went largely unnoticed by the public, but Revolver brought that sound into the public consciousness. Which one hits the list? Think I'll go with the second, because if you do the influence thing then Spectre would probably replace Wilson.
F*ck!!! Back soon.

ouch, you know i'm sorry. 10 essential albums can mean anything. if you really want that, we'll just drag up the freakin Rolling Stone top 10 albums from their top 500 albums of all time. these albums change me as a person and influenced me. to me these are essential albums.

ah f*** it, you dont like it, take it down. one of you must have mod privlages. deal with it. ...f***ing christ almighty...

my essential is different from others essential and since my taste in music is only so wide, i will neglect others that people believe should make a top 10 list so therefore no matter what i do, it will not look favorably as to what i put (although, funny enough, you blew up more over the U2 albums instead of that Arcade Fire album i snuck in there :P)

Damn we think alike.

I'll say:

Beach Boys--Pet Sounds
Beatles--Revolver
Nick Drake--Bryter Later (or Pink Moon)
Bob Dylan--Blonde on Blonde
Elvis--Sun Sessions
Jimi Hendrix: Axis: Bold as Love
Pink Floyd--Piper at the Gates of Dawn
John Prine--Bruised Orange
Shaver--Unshaven
Richard and Linda Thompson--I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

Been listening to alot of Prine lately, man, that guy hasn't put out a bad album.

Good question Mr. K. Thompsons contribution to English folk/folk rock is immense, having been one of the origintors. In fact, now I come to think olf it, I probably should have had Liege and Lief in my 10. Shoot Out The Lights would be my favourite of the stuff he did with the wife.

LIEGE AND LIEF was a toss up between UNHALFBRICKING for me ,but i think the roots were planted on UNHALF.. for LEIGE to blossom [ive gone all green fingered :-/]

Can you explain to me why you`ve gone for MILES DAVIES ? BLUE MEANIE.

Miles was one of the great jazz innovators. He pretty much invented jazz rock with 'In A Silent Way' - the album before 'b****es Brew'.

Funny, we already have all 3 of the Hendrix studio albums released in his lifetime!

I love Fairport and Sandy Denny, and the looseness of the folk-rock stuff, but the songs on IWTSTBLT (some acronym!) are amazing in their power and concision.  The Great Valerio is heart-stopping and Little Beggar Girl is one of the best "protest" songs of all-time.  I think this album defines singer-songwriter of the 70s-80s.  No one touches Richard on this album.  And Linda sings these songs better than Sandy could have (IMHO).

I also love Dave Mattacks drumming with Richard and Linda.  One of the greatest rock drummers around (and most under-rated).  I also like the guitar focus on R & L's stuff.  But that's just my personal preference.

I need to add Big Star--Radio City to my list (and take off Nick Drake, too trendy).  I also need to add Neil Young--Tonight's the Night.  I don't know what I'd take off for that.  The Clash also belong on any essential list for me.  London Calling, probably.  And I think something from the Velvet Underground--probably the first album.  And I forgot the Stones, have to have Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed or Exile.

Actually only the bottom four albums in my list have those typical summer/beach/surf songs. Most people don't know that the Beach Boys only made that type of songs until 1964.
