Don't know how you're defining pop, but ...
1.  Thriller
2.  My Aim Is True
3.  The Cars' first one
4.  Monkees' Pisces ...
5.  Tapestry

Interesting list of lists (yes, I got stuck):

^^^^^ Was thinking Pop albums that are very commercial sounding walrus_21 , full of hits , Thriller from Michael Jackson is a good example you give (smile)
Was listening to ABC - The Lexicon Of Love (1982) this morning , and it's still rather good, it's full of catchy pop songs .
Love this song not sure about their fashion sense though lol

I never cared for this brand of Brit Pop.  Style-first, and really misguided at even that.  This genre, and cheesy hair metal, were rightly swept away by Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Where is our new savior?  ;-)  Probably an Internet mogul.  I've heard that theory more than once.

^^^^^ Much of the 80's stuff as not aged well i must agree , but some pop songs from that time i still like , mind you it was my era .
The Smiths and The Cure were good ?
Not sure Nirvana swept the cheesy stuff away though , seem to remember the same been said about Punk doing similar .
It gets marginalized for a while i think, then something like pop idol/American idol comes along a your knee deep in cheese and it stinks worse than ever .

Welcome To the Pleasure Dome - Frankie goes To Hollywood is up there from the 80's...Another great Scouse outfit, even if heavily sequenced by the great Trevor Horn.

Good point, Dave.  You can never really kill bad music and pretense.  Only marginalize it for a bit.  American Idol -- ugh.

I may have said before, but I think Ram is Paul's most perfect release.  Side 1 in particular is breathtaking.

^^^^^^ Agree that's a great pop album of the period , Relax and Two Tribes were monster hit's in the UK , remember clubbing at the time and those two songs had a stranglehold on the charts for over a year , and Relax was banned but it did'nt stop it's popularity .

And New Order released a brace of excellent albums. I really enjoyed the Jesus and Mary Chain and The Waterboys. REM were doing good stuff, and INXS and Midnight Oil.

Tears For Fears 1st album Pale Shelter I think is worth a mention. A corker in it's day aswell. Nice other mentions, I also liked INXS - Kick, Waterboys....Never got into New Order that much but appreciate their influence on other artists.

It's funny that most genres were considered pop back in the day.

memories.....do you think that us gentleman of a certain age who were in our prime in the eighties might remember that decade slightly more fondly than it deserves? Or is it really misunderstood and great music was being made despite The Impossibly Big Trousers And Hair?

How is this album Paul? I've only heard 'Its Magic' but nothing else from them.

There are so many good Pop-Albums, but my all-time-favorite is " True " from Spandau Ballet.
