Make a 60s compilation without The Beatles
« on: March 29, 2017, 01:31:50 AM »

A friend recently challenged me to do this; I was allowed twenty tracks but every track had to be by a different group or artist.

Here is what I came up with:

Cathy's Clown (The Everly Brothers)
Needles & Pins (The Searchers)
Bits & Pieces (The Dave Clark 5)
You Really Got Me (The Kinks)
Oh Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison)
Down Town (Petula Clark)
All I Really Want To Do (The Byrds)
Look Through Any Window (The Hollies)
California Dreaming (The Mamas & The Papas)
Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones)
No Milk Today (Herman's Hermits)
Summer In The City (The Lovin' Spoonful)
God Only Knows (The Beach Boys)
Pleasant Valley Sunday (The Monkees)
Georgy Girl (The Seekers)
Ha! Ha! Said The Clown (Manfred Mann)
I Am A Rock (Simon & Garfunkel)
Aquarius (The Fifth Dimension)
Light Flight (Pentangle)
Leaving On A Jet Plane (Peter, Paul & Mary)

He was taken aback that there was no Dylan or Hendrix, nor even so much as a smattering of Tamla Motown. Led Zeppelin, The Who and Elvis all failed to appear. But I wasn't trying to assemble a decade defining list - just sixties songs which, from a mixture of nostalgia and pure pleasure I could happily listen to over and over again. I did apply some brakes to the tide of childhood sentimentality; so Ronnie Hilton's "Windmill In Old Amsterdam", despite its ingrained treasure trove of carefree singalong memories at my mother's knee, failed to make the cut.

Most of them were big hit singles - and with good reason.

What would have to feature on your version?

Oops. Just saw I could have 20.

I might reserve the last six for more consideration

Just to clarify Mr.M, are we just making a list of songs we like or a list that is somewhat more representative of the era and one that would be more acceptable to the listening public?  I guess what i'm saying is, are we trying to leave out the more obscure and going with a more radio friendly theme?

You repeated Fleetwood Mac Kev. You'll need another when thinking of your list.  Lol

I've taken a more nostalgic approach then trying to pick a 60s best of. I can now add to my initial 14. I''m also avoiding nicking from others lists so I've left off It's Gonna Be Alright by Gerry and the Pacemakers and Look Through Any Window by The Hollies. It's Gonna Be Alright was pretty much the only GatP song I liked to any great degree. Luckily there's a few Hollies ones I remember fondly

Funny How Love Can Be - The Ivy League
Arnold Layne - The Pink Floyd
Sorry Suzanne  - The Hollies

I have three more spots to use wisely!

Entirely up to you tkitna.

I myself went down the "personal favourites" route. A "decade definitive/representative of the era" list would have been very different had I decided to take that option - I would have certainly included Dylan, Motown etc etc

Loving all the lists you guys are generating; some great stuff so far, keep it up! :)

I'm going to take a nostalgic approach, too. The first 11 songs are from my collection of 45's. I was too young to buy records until about 1971 but I remember playing these on the little record player I got for my 5th birthday in 1968. Somehow these left the older kids' collections and took up residency with my Disneyland records. The rest are songs that I remember hearing on the radio at the time they were popular and that I liked.

In no particular order...

1. Let's Spend the Night Together/Ruby Tuesday-The Rolling Stones (I know, I know but it's a double A side.)

2. All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks (The first record my brother ever bought.)

3. Washington Square - The Village Stompers

4. Party Doll - The Hullaballoos

5. Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf

6. Blowin' in the Wind - Peter, Paul and Mary (When my sister bought this the guy that owned the record store called it "Baloney in the Wind". She was not amused.)

7. Thank the Lord for the Night Time - Neil Diamond

8. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly

9. Love is Blue - Paul Mauriat

10. Light My Fire - The Doors

11. True Love Ways - Peter and Gordon

12. Windy - The Association

13. Georgy Girl - The Seekers

14. Downtown - Petula Clark

15. Happy Together - The Turtles

16. Hanky Panky - Tommy James and the Shondells

17. Winchester Cathedral - The New Vaudeville Band

18. The House of the Rising Sun -  The Animals

19. Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds

20. Mr. Bassman - Johnny Cymbal (I don't remember it on the radio and I don't have the record but it gets an honorable mention. My brother used to play it just to hear me scream, until my dad broke it over his head. And I remember.)

Sorry I nicked Georgy Girl and Downtown but I loved them and I would have been short without them!
