Love You To
« on: April 23, 2004, 10:00:12 PM »

This is something that has always bothered me.

Did Deorge mean "Love You Too", like maybe he was absent-minded and confused "too" with "to", or did he put it that way by accident; maybe he was writing the title down and someone interrupted him, and he never got around to adding that last "o" there? Or, is there a whole word missing, like maybe he was going to title it "Love You To Death" and got interrupted and never wrote the last word, or what? Drives me NUTS!!

Beyond offering expensive therapy for you I can only offer the following reasons.  :-)

Love You To.

To what?  Whatever you want.  Open ended.

And George was famous for having a harder time with song titles than any other part of the  process.

Or, for Taxgirl, he'd 'love you to'.  I imagine she can fill in the blanks.  ;-)

yes, that's true, I heard that George always had problems with naming the songs.

I believe that if it was a John song no one would think twice, since he was well known for wordplay.  Obviously George too was playing around.  I wouldn't think for one minute he didn't do this on purpose (as opposed to making a grammar error).

I know! You'd almost think he'd spent too much time in a german pub during his teen years.  ;)

Maybe that was the point.  To make one of his songs stick out a little bit more, since he rarely got the attention.

Or maybe I am just waaaaay over-analyzing it!  ;)

Perhaps it wasn't an error, perhaps he meant "I'd LOVE YOU TO come with me too"! In any case, it should really have benn called "Love To You" because that's the closest line to the title in the song!

Before George came up with the title, this song was called "Granny Smith", after the apple!

I'm sure it wasn't an error but the question is a very interesting one.
Maybe, to follow The End's reasoning, he thought of calling it 'Make Love To You' which was too direct so he decided to garble it by rearanging some of the words. 8)

It was definitely on purpose.

It's a simple play on words.

No deep meanings here, move along.

I won't ask you for the evidence that it was "definitely on purpose"! :)

But I would like to know what the "simple play on words" is. In an earlier post you said:

Love You To.
To what?

LOL!

I suppose the play on words is how you read it and how it is heard if read aloud - it's two different meanings. By adding or subtracting a single letter, the sentence takes on a whole other connotation.

If you say it aloud, you automatically assume "love you too"
If read aloud it means "love you to" do something.

Whatever, it's just George not being able to think of a title again!

It IS a play on words.  Or perhaps more correctly, a play WITH words.

My initial remark was just a glip off the top of the head answer, partly because I was a bit incredulous anyone was bothered by it.  I'm sure we all noticed it, but no one I know was ever bugged by it.  That's what makes our bright big world I guess. :)

Please!  No apologies (from YOU anyway).  ;-)

We all have our quirks...and I know a lot of people who are indeed language folks that get easily irritated by inconsistencies or just bad usage.

I understand, but sometimes it still surprises me.  The questiion and thread subject is quite valid.  No problem-o there!

hehe,

i've got another speculation :
george wanted to say something directly...

look at the last lines of the song:

I'll make love to you
If you want me too

that last >too< has been exchanged with the >to< of the title.

if you do not believe this, you probably may be right. :) ;D :)

Holy sugar!  I didn't notice the 'too' on first reading this!  That makes not only perfect sense but makes the whole song a very clever thingie.

Very good call!
