Bill Harry celebrates the 50th anniversary of Mersey Beat – the newspaper he created and edited

IT was 50 years ago . . . this month. Merseyside’s music-loving teenagers were beginning to move to a new beat – and one man wanted to spread the good news. And so Mersey Beat, Bill Harry’s incredibly-influential publication, was born – ensuring the art college friend of John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe would be at the centre of a musical revolution which later reverberated around the world. Now 72, Bill tells the ECHO from his home in Bayswater, London: “It really doesn’t seem like that long ago, particularly when so many people from all over the world continue to tell me how much they love the Merseyside music of that era.”
