From the rumor mill:

Beatles seek help to join the video game revolution
By Joshua Chaffin in New York and Chris Nuttall in San,Francisco

Beatles representatives are in talks with two companies to create a Beatles-themed video game in a move that could pave the way for a broader licensing of the Fab Four's catalogue.

The representatives have held discussions with both Acti-vision and MTV Games, the respective makers of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, in which players strum along to favourite songs or form virtual bands.

A final deal would be worth several million dollars, according to a person familiar with the talks, and could be reached in a matter of weeks. However, it would have first to win the blessing of both Apple Corps, the company established by the band to oversee its business interests, and EMI, the UK music group that owns the Beatles master recordings. Both declined to comment.

The surviving Beatles and their heirs have been cautious about exploiting their material on new platforms. They were slow to re-issue their albums on compact disc.

In spite of repeated discussions, EMI and Apple Corps have yet to license Beatles recordings for digital use, including for sale through Apple's iTunes music store.

Apple Corps has become more active in recent months since Jeff Jones took over as chief executive.

The company, whose board includes Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono Lennon, has allowed Beatles compositions to be used on American Idol and in a Las Vegas show.

Martin Bandier, chief executive of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which controls more than 200 Beatles copyrights, said the exposure on American Idol had yielded a number of inquiries, including from mobile phone carriers.

'Rock Band' to meet the Beatles?

Categories: Games, Music, Music Biz

There has been talk of an all-Beatles videogame for months, but where it would land -- MTV Games' Rock Band franchise or Activision's Guitar Hero -- remained a mystery. Now, according to sources close to the situation, it looks like Rock Band has won out, with an announcement expected tomorrow, detailing a global licensing deal for the Fab Four's music. EW.com hears that the game will be a stand-alone disc, like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (which has moved more than a million units since its June 2008 release), as opposed to downloadable content. Whether it will also include the band members' likenesses is still unclear, although the game will feature different eras of the band's career visually, starting with the black-and-white feel of the early '60s, and moving into the mod Rubber Soul years, Yellow Submarine, and their final hippie phase. (No word yet on whether the game will introduce new instruments, but here's hoping for a plastic sitar.)

For Harmonix, the company that develops Rock Band, the special edition game will be the big priority for 2009. In June, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos put the Beatles at the top of his artist wish list, along with Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones -- "Titanic bands of that era that have a special place in peoples' hearts," he told EW. (Rock Band has since secured exclusive rights to AC/DC's music.) MTV President Van Toffler, when asked about the probability of an all-Beatles game, joked, "I heard they're pretty popular. That would be big, right?" But around the same time, Guitar Hero cofounder Kai Huang was still holding out hope. "The Beatles are very unique: They

At least it's music related, not underarm stuff ("Just another day" would work in that market though, I think)!

First Time in Interactive Form Here, There and Everywhere in 2009

NEW YORK, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Beatles' extraordinary
music and phenomenal legacy is set to rock across the universe in the form
of a video game through an exclusive partnership between Apple Corps Ltd.,
Harmonix and MTV Games, a part of Viacom's MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B).

This partnership marks the first time that Apple Corps, along with EMI

The Beatles music in an interactive video game format. Published by MTV
Games and developed by Harmonix, the world's premier music video game

unprecedented, experiential progression through and celebration of the
music and artistry of The Beatles. The game was creatively conceived with
input from Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon
and Olivia Harrison, and enjoys their full blessing. In addition, Giles
Martin, co-producer of The Beatles innovative LOVE project, will provide
his expertise and serve as Music Producer for this groundbreaking Beatles
project.

"The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and
their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music
from the inside out," Sir Paul McCartney said.

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and

to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that The Beatles'
legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the
computerized world we live in. Let the games commence."

"It's cool. I love it and hope it will keep inspiring and encouraging
the young generation for many decades," said Yoko Ono Lennon.

"People are having so much fun playing Rock Band. Combined with The
Beatles tracks, it is a great way to either listen or participate," said
Olivia Harrison. "If you like the music, it doesn't take much persuasion to
get you to play."

"Introducing the genius of The Beatles to a whole new generation of
music lovers through original and inspired ways is extremely exciting to us
at Apple Corps," stated Jeff Jones, CEO, Apple Corps. "We are truly pleased
to be working with the innovative forces at MTV and Harmonix as they embody
our mutual passions for music and creativity."

"Many of us have been part of a generation that has long enjoyed an
enduring love affair with The Beatles and now we're looking to extend that
love affair for future generations to enjoy," said Van Toffler. "Our
inspiration for this project comes from a keen sense of history and a place
of utmost reverence and respect for the band, their music and their
heritage."

"The impact of The Beatles is forever ingrained in the hearts, minds
and souls of millions the world over," said Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO
of MTV Networks. "The Beatles are the reason many of us are WHERE we are,
and some of us are WHO we are."

"We are honored to be part of this new way for people to discover the
timeless music and art of The Beatles -- the most creatively and
commercially successful, critically acclaimed, and influential band in the
history of popular music," stated Paul DeGooyer, MTV's Senior Vice
President of Electronic Games & Music.

"By presenting their music and artistry through the creative filter of
a groundbreaking video game, we are giving legions of fans and music lovers
all over the world a profound, new way to experience The Beatles," said
Alex Rigopulos, CEO and Co-Founder, Harmonix. "This game will be a
celebration of the Beatles undeniable legacy."

Here's what one of my students learned from Rock Band: The Red Hot Chili Peppers made the song Crossroads famous because they did it better than the original band. Some band named Cream.

Just had to share that little tid bit.

^Hmmmm.

BTW, Rock Band is amazingly fun. I have played it only once but I loved it. I sang lead vocals on Baba O'Riley and got a ridiculously high score! I do think that it is something that could get kids interested in playing music.

I'm a bit confused by this. All the reports I've read suggest that this isn't a part of the Rock Band franchise, but a standalone game made by the same people, using the music/characters/themes etc of The Beatles. However, the quotes from Olivia and Ringo above suggest it *is* a Rock Band game after all. Hmm.

The information can be found at the above link, and it is legitimate.  Does anyone else think that this is a precursor to the catalog of the Beatles music finally being remastered and digitally released?  It certainly seems to indicate as much.

After listening to the Love album, I can hardly wait to hear the CD's in a remastered and remixed format.  It was almost like hearing the song for the first time again, with some of them - the sound quality was that damn good.  Anyway, I'm excited for both the game and the possibility of a good quality Beatles CD collection.

As far as the question of whether it's a "Rock Band" game in terms of how it's named, they are indeed keeping mum about that. What's important is that if you own Rock Band, your instruments will work in the game, so you could consider it a Rock Band game in that sense.
