Classic 60's songs: Turn! Turn! Turn!
« on: December 04, 2016, 08:26:13 PM »

"Turn! Turn! Turn!" is one of the most famous songs recorded by the Byrds, who released it as a single in October 1965. It was the second and last #1 hit the band had in US; and it peaked at #26 in UK. The song had been written by folk singer Pete Seeger; but the lyrics are basically the text corresponding to Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 from the Bible, so King Solomon was the actual lyricist. The version recorded by the Byrds became an instant classic and another important example of nascent folk rock from that year. The biblical message reinforced on peace at the end of the song also illustrated signs of the counterculture developed during the decade.

Can't stand it, turgid & boring

I'm not a fan of The Byrd,  they were on the bill at Lincoln festival when I was about 19, it seemed everyone was yawning and waiting for a better more dynamic band to come on.

Pete Seeger's Turn! Turn! Turn! was one of our anthems during the turbulent 60s....

^^^^^^

I love Pete Seeger. I had the chance to see him perform at Cornell University in the spring of 1990 and feel blessed to have done so. I went with my sorority roommate, whose father was a good friend of Pete's, which amazed me at the time. Her father was a folk singer who did a great (IMO) version of "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall." When he and his wife came for Parents' Weekend I bore down on him with a ton of compliments and questions.  :)

This one is ok. Never a huge favourite of mine. I don't think it's aged well. But I suppose it wasn't meant to.  As HG says it was an anthem of the times.

Sorry Hombre_de_ningun_lugar  :)

I did know you don't like the Byrds, nimrod. And if you expected for a more dynamic band, the Byrds surely were not your kind of group. That's alright, you don't need to sorry.

Personally I love the Byrds not for considering them "dynamic", but for their deep harmonies, clean sound and innovation capacity. In fact, around 1965-66, they were one of the most experimental groups along with the Beatles and the Yardbirds. I'm sure Rubber Soul, the first mature album of the Fab Four, would not have existed if not for the Byrds. In turn, the Byrds would not have existed if not for George's 12-string guitar used in A Hard Day's Night.

But hey, I also love much wilder bands like the Who or Cream. But they are not necessarily better, they are just different, and I'm happy I can appreciate several music styles (folk rock, acid rock, hard rock, etc.). Perhaps I'm more narrow minded when it's about more modern music. :)

In my country "We Shall Overcome" is a well known song. Pete Seeger did not write this old anthem, but he is identified with it.

A version in Spanish was made during very sad and hard days around here.

I think "Turn! Turn! Turn!" is one of those songs where the message is stronger than the music. Even the melody is quite repetitive and monotonous, but it serves very well as a medium to transmite those words.

I think King Solomon would have enjoyed his lyrics put to music.  His father was quite good at that.

I agree, the drumming is good; but you're confusing a byrd (Mike Clarke) with a turtle (Johnny Barbata)!

I agree. I love this song. It's very meaningful both socially and on a personal level.
