Wasnt Revolution a double lead job too? John did the double stop thrash stuff with George the other lead line?

I'd add You Can't Do That to the list.  George is playing his Rickenbacker 360-12 in the Hollywood Bowl video.  Watch John.  He plays lead on his Rickenbacker 325 at 1:29

Here's a breakdown showing George's part...

The Beatles: "You Can't Do That" (George's part) Rickenbacker 360/12C63 & '67 Gibson Skylark amp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOGYWPNemX4#)
John's lead is at 1:43

That's right. Georges lead work falls along the acoustic version. I'd say all 3 play guitar on Helter Skelter with George on bass as well.

I think as in the one on R & R Circus, John played his choppy lead then Eric (or George) takes over

So Ill take it off the list

On &R Circus I think it was Eric but on the White Album George rips it Even though there's a lot of studio reverb on his lead!

Considering how many songs the Beatles recorded the list isn't very long. Of course acknowledging that many songs simply didn't have a lead guitar solo.

No argument on best. Something is gorgeous. One of the great guitar solos ever as far as I'm concerned.

And I'll follow the sun solo is pretty lame. A feeble restating of the melody. I'll have to see if I can find a weaker George solo.

Another great solo is in Til There Was You.  Like all the best of George. Not technically overly demanding. But every note working beautifully.

8 lousy notes

wrong guitar tone

Till There Was You, did George create that or did somebody else ?

I think John does the sqwauckey part. reminds me of the rhythm part in What Goes On. Main lead sounds a bit like the one in I, Me Mine a couple of years later that we know John didn't play on.

You guys have some good points! I agree with Kev that it sounds more like Paul than George.

In the Hey Bulldog video, John is shown with the Gibson SG guitar, but George is shown playing rhythm I think? That may be a tip-off. One other thing that makes me think it's John is that he often used little partial chord forms and double notes in his solos, like in You Can't Do That. Paul tended to be more single-notey, but who knows?

According to my reference it was George. John played piano. It recounts an anecdote that the people in the studio revved George to turn his amp up.

But I agree it sounds like a Paul solo to me. More busy than melodic

Apparently this was the last recording session before Yoko made herself a fixture in the studio. It was by all accounts a happy session that went better than anyone expected.

John also tried to get this released as a single instead of lady Madonna.

I was reading that George fought for the Ill Follow the Sun solo. Apparently John was doing some acoustic solos (not overly successfully) and George said he wanted to do a lead. It ended up being used but no one was happy with it. Even george

Thing is even a few choice notes can work well. But in duplicating the melody the notes weren't particularly choice.  ha2ha

Paul played lead guitar on Drive My Car.  George played bass.

As far as I know, Paul played bass on "Drive My Car", though it's also true that Paul played the solo with a slide guitar.

I think there's an usual confusion about George playing bass on "Drive My Car", because of this George's quote from 1977:

Quote
"If Paul had written a song, he'd learn all the parts and then come in the studio and say 'Do this.' He'd never give you the opportunity to come out with something. But on 'Drive My Car' I just played the line, which is really like a lick off 'Respect,' you know, the Otis Redding version. And I played the line on the guitar and Paul laid that with me on the bass. We laid that track down like that. We played the lead part later on top of it."

I think the phrase "with me on the bass" was misunderstood. I think George meant that he played the line on the guitar, and Paul did the same with the bass, as it can be heard in the song.

I think that will continue to be debated, Andres.  The isolated bass track reveals a bassline a bit different from Paul's usual style and ability...

Recorded a few weeks later during the Rubber Soul Sessions was I'm Looking Through You.  For a comparison, here is Paul's isolated bass...

Yes, the style of the bassline is different than the usual Paul's playing. But remember that in "Drive My Car" the idea of playing that way came from George. According to George, he played the line with his guitar and it seems that Paul did the same with the bass. If you listen to the song, you'll see that bass and guitar play the same line through the track. I think that's the fingerprint of the song.

Nevertheless, you're right, the theme will still be subject of debate.

While George was servicable on the bass, I think DMC is Paul. I don't think George could pull it off

Don't forget John played the first lead in Long Tall Sally.

 ;D

Also George handled the bass in She Said She Said when Paul stormed off. A very capable bass line, indeed!

He also did the very active, almost lead bass, on Two of Us.
