Yeah.  Joe South wrote a whole mess of songs for Lynn Anderson and Billy Joe Royal who went and had hits with them.

Even the Osmonds covered one of his songs...

Joe South was a pretty good guitarist too.  He backed Bob Dylan on Blonde On Blonde.  Here he is on Aretha Franklin's Chain Of Fools.

This is the full, unedited version...

They don't play that much these days.

'Rose Garden' was also covered by Sandie Shaw in 1970, with none other than 'Maybe I'm Amazed' on the b-side, presumably the first cover version of that song (?).

I think so, oldbrownshoe.  Lynn Anderson recorded her version in 1971.

"Rose Garden" is one of those songs that found its way into my consciousness by accident. The town I grew up in during the '70's had this radio station that most of us kids never listened to by choice. It was still playing the same records from when it signed on in the 1950's; the strange novelty songs, some of which I haven't heard since, were the worst we thought. But since we were the Land of the Endless Mountains WLEM was all we could get, at least during the day. At night we'd pull in the Buffalo AM stations then later we discovered FM. Since moms always had it on in the kitchen during the day we couldn't help but hear it. They did play some current songs of the time but they were mostly country songs, like "Rose Garden". I never would have admitted it then but I really did like some of them! I found out I wasn't alone when one of the girls I graduated with posted "Rose Garden" on Facebook. One curious thing was that the station would never play Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" because of the word "booze". However, every morning, promptly at 7:15 they played "My Ding-a-Ling" by Chuck Berry. I heard that just about every school morning while I was trying to wake up! LOL

After the recent clear out (duplicate copies, pretty much anything after the 60s, Led Zeppelin) it's time to fill in the gaps, and so 'The Fugs First Album' was purchased in Berwick Street on Saturday.

John Peel said of it, 'I couldn't understand why The Fugs LP wasn't in the chart as everyone I knew owned a copy, until I realised that everyone who owned a copy I knew!'

I like this  single-tracked-vocal version better than the album version. Shame it´s only available on the Capitol Albums Volume 1 box set.

The Beatles - "And I Love Her" / "If I Fell" - Original Mono Single

Brynjar, that's the way I first heard it and I like that that version better too.  Both the MONO and STEREO United Artists A Hard Day's Night Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LPs had that single-tracked vocal version on it...

So why is this message appearing "Embedding disabled, limit reached"?  This is the first video I've posted in a while.  :-\

Because we've reached the maximum number of YouTube videos we can place on this page, George.  When we get to the next page, the count starts all over again.  It has nothing to do with the number of videos you've posted.

Thanks for the explanation Barry.  Makes sense.

John Renbourn (from Pentangle): 'The Lady & The Unicorn' (Transatlantic, 1970). Can't believe that Paul wouldn't have dug this as it has a very similar vibe, albeit a folky one, to 'McCartney' from the same year.
It's actually alerted me to an alarming gap in the ol' collection, namely the shameful absence of Davey Graham records. Oh dear, no excuse, that will have to be remedied next Saturday.....I've just got to find a football match near central London to fit around it!

Gone totally GROOVY after picking up one of those library music compilations of stuff that used to be sold to film and TV companies in the 60s for £1.99 in Oxfam.
It's called 'Blow Up Volume 2' and was all the rage around the time of Britpop. I already had Volume 1, and it's really so enjoyable I might hunt out Volumes 3 & 4.
Rather frighteningly the CD itself is now 17 years old!
