Well, Stuart was there before him, so he used to be #5.

Yes.

There were nine in total...

John Lennon
Paul McCartney
George Harrison
Stu Sutcliffe
Pete Best
Chas Newby
Johnny Hutchinson
Ringo Starr
Jimmy Nicol

Stu & John thought of the name, so clearly they were Beatles #1 & #2.

Paul & George came next, so they were Beatles #3 & #4.

Then came Pete Best.  Beatle #5

The final Beatle was Ringo Starr.  Beatle #6

Pete Best WAS the 5th Beatle.

I didn't see the list of candidates, but if Stuart Sutcliffe is on it, he shouldn't be....he was in actuality the fourth Beatle.  He joined as a Quarryman---when the group became The Beatles (his suggestion), it was John, Paul, George and Stuart.  Thanks---

Actually, it was John, Stu, Paul & George.  Not John, Paul, George & Stu.

"When Stuart came in, it felt as if he was taking the position away from George and me. We had to take a bit of a back seat. "

- Paul McCartney on Stuart Sutcliffe

Stu also came up with the name "Beetles" with an assist from John (changing the spelling to "Beatles"), so clearly he was the 1st or 2nd Beatle, not 4th.

Interesting post----in terms of sequence, the musical group of John, George and Paul existed as the Quarrymen with several people joining in and out.  Stuart came into this group in early 1960.  Then with Stuart and John collaborating on the name change (Stuart supplying the "beetles" or "beatals" idea and John being creative with the spelling), the entire band became The (Silver) Beatles.  As your Paul quote indicated, he and George had to take a "back seat" when Stuart joined...showing they were already in place as band members when Sutcliffe became their bass player.  Stuart is therefore fourth.
