Not meaning to raise any dust at all here, but the official Beatles Web site does list 'MMT' among the official releases. Just wondering about this.

Imports were  selling well, so it was released in 1976. But my point is those songs were never intended by the band to be heard together on an album. Love Songs is no doubt an official release, but we never argue its merits versus say Revolver.
MMT has been loaded with hits by some marketting exec in Capitol, so of course it's going to sound good. (it's a great piece of vinyl)
Yesterday was released in the US as a single in 1965 and in the UK in 1976. It's an official release. But we would never (I hope) waste our time putting it in some "favourite singles" list, because the band never intended it to be one. Likewise Back in the USSR/Twist and Shout (Parlophone R6016 released 29/06/1976) which got to #19 in the UK charts. An official release, but surely no one here considers it a Beatles single as they do Help! or Paperback Writer.
In all my thirty years of Beatle following, it has always been the UK released, band sanctioned material that warrant any serious discussion/listing, not the whims of american record company employees.  Otherwise releases from Argentina, Taiwan, Norway, Togoland etc would need inclusion, for they are as "valid" as US releases.

You have my permission  :)
Yellow Submarine was a Beatle sanctioned UK release. It is a Beatle album, regardless of the George Martin score.
My whole point about MMT is that the track listing was decided by Capitol Executives, not The Beatles. It's a compliation album. Otherwise my Beatle rankings would be (based on strength of songs):
1. Blue Album
2. Red Album
3. Rock'n'Roll
4. Rubber Soul
5. Magical Mystery Tour.....etc

It makes any meaningful discussion pointless.

I suppose to have a valid comparison, we'd have to rank the same albums, but I feel that's already being done in SSG.

Here are the albums I usually listen to:

1. Love
2. Live at the BBC
3. Abbey Road
4. Rubber soul
5. Revolver

Usually I just listen to individual tracks of most albums. Occasionally I'll play:

Past Masters Vol. 1
All the movie ones: Help, HDN, MMT, YS
Beatles for sale
With the beatles
Please Please Me
Anthology 3

Sgt Pepper is not high on my list, as I only like a few tracks from it. (The ones I do like, I really like, however.)
I actively dislike the White Album and LIB. I can tolerate a few tracks off either, but I don't care for the albums overall.

5. With The Beatles

I think the individual songs merit discussion, but not the album. In most peoples eyes, outside of the US it was not an album during the groups' lifetime. Therefore, not of their choosing.

Like most of these type of threads, the question has been too loosely worded. It should say official original UK releases from 1963-1970. Anything else is a compilation. If MMT as an album is going to be included, we might as well have 'Meet The Beatles', and all the other bastardised American releases. And let's throw in the Indian version of 'Pepper' while we're at it. ;)

I'm amused by the quibbling over Capitol's 'meddling' with track content, even though I would prefer to see the group's wishes respected. But they were, after all, a business concern investing a lot of effort and resources into marketing this product to their particular customer base. One which they knew and understood pretty well, judging from the screaming success they made of it. As for the American market being negligible and insignificant...well, tell that to the boy's accountants.

Used to be Abbey Road, but over the years Ive come to appreciate the broad sweep of the White album, its a stonking set with so many different facets to it. I love other stuff like Pepper and Revolver etc but the over production gets on my nerves after a while, not to say that they are'nt awesome in their own way though!!!!

I don't have the movie version but I don't like the real version only because about half is background music to the movie.

Hmmm.... I go for Dr Ebbetts UK singles collection, A Hard Day's Night, Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Abbey Road for its splendid second side. Then I'm stumped trying to narrow it down more than that, or even sorting it out!

Hi there, first time poster here, I thought this was easily the best subject for my first post.  Here we go:

1. Abbey Road
2. The Beatles
3. Revolver
4. Please Please Me
5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Beatles For Sale
7. Rubber Soul
8. A Hard Day's Night
9. Help!
10. Magical Mystery Tour
11. Let It Be
12. With The Beatles
13. Yellow Submarine

YS is definitely last, as with most people, but I almost put WTB down there.  For some reason, it just never clicked with me, not sure why.  Classic album cover, though.  And yes, I am the guy who puts BFS in the top 6, I really like it.  Reading this thread, not many do, but I think it holds up really well from top to bottom, and No Reply is one of my all-time favorites.  Anyway, just thought I'd add my thoughts, see you around the boards.

Hi there, first time poster here, I thought this was easily the best subject for my first post.

Welcome aboard and congratulations for actually answering the question, which is more than I managed with my semi non-answer above. I tend to think Beatles For Sale is a bit underrated, too: the covers of "Rock and Roll Music" and "Kansas City" are terrific, and the more bluesy / C&W feel to much of the album is a good conceptual move after A Hard Day's Night. It's probably true that much of that comes from the band simply being tired and already wearying of Beatlemania, but the impression the album leaves by way of contrast with its predecessors is that these aren't guys who'll stick to a formula. :)

Phew. Sorry. This is a pet peeve of mine.

Well, while I understand your argument here, I think that MMT is the ONLY capitol album that should be respected. I hate (or would hate if I ever listened to them) the Beatles' early capitol albums because of the track listings. that being said, I like the Magical Mystery Tour Album. a six song double EP? that's lame. I know what you mean when you say that the Beatles didn't "intend" for it but let's face it, the US version of Magical Mystery Tour has become the official version. it's the version you buy in the UK nowadays. I'm happy to have Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields on an LP.....where they belong.

my only beef with the MMT LP is Hello Goodbye starting out side two of the vinyl (or following Walrus on CD). I think songs like Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields have plenty of "Magic" in them to warrant their release with the film songs. but Hello Goodbye sure doesn't. I always thought that side two should open with Strawberry Fields followed by Penny Lane.

and to answer the thread's question, here is my list of albums from favorite to least favorite:

1) White Album
2) Sgt. Pepper's
3) Magical Mystery Tour
4) Revolver
5) Abbey Road
6) Let It Be
7) Rubber Soul
8) Help!
9) Beatles For Sale
10) A Hard Day's Night
11) Please Please Me
12) Yellow Submarine
13) With the Beatles

1. SGT. PEPPER'S (difficult choice between this one and REVOLVER, one could argue that most of the songs on REVOLVER were stronger, but the album SGT. PEPPER's is stronger than the sum of the parts)

2. REVOLVER (a brilliant album, that any artist would have considered the pinnacle of his career)

3. RUBBER SOUL (In some aspects the strongest album the band ever recorded, there are - almost - no weak songs on it and R.S. was the best album ever made until 1965)

4. ABBEY ROAD (a beautiful album, and my personal favourite)

5. THE BEATLES (a masterpiece, of course and an album pointing the direction(s) for all the artists to follow)

6. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (the first Beatles' album that had all killer no filler)

7. WITH THE BEATLES (good early Beatles album, a huge step forward from PLEASE PLEASE ME)

8. LET IT BE (not great, but an album containing such classics as "Across the universe", "let it be", "the long and winding road", "get back" and some solid songs like "two of us" or 'I me mine' isn't that bad either

9. PLEASE PLEASE ME (mostly dated now, but the exceptions are wonderful: "I saw her standing there" and "twist and shout" rank among the best the band ever recorded, while "Do you want to know a secret" and "there's a place" are slumbering gems)

10. HELP! (The Beatles were musicians, not moviestars, Help! has a couple of good songs though ("Ticket to Ride", "Help", "Yesterday", "You've got to hide your love away")

11. BEATLES FOR SALE (disappointing, two or three good songs)

12. MMT (an EP with some high points, including the brilliant "I am The Walrus"; most of the songs on side one however are mere filler, only saved by studio experience; of course the singles on side two are excellent, even brilliant, but that material had been issued before)

13. YELLOW SUBMARINE (not even an album, though side one contains the excellent "Hey Bulldog")

Oh, yes, indeed, if put that way, Abbey Road would top my list, but I tried to rank the albums from the one that I thought to be the best to my worst... I love SGT. PEPPER'S, but somehow I like it more to listen to AR

Not that much? If I fell, And I love her, Can't buy me love? I'll be back? I should have known better? (AHDN started the Byrd's career)...

On "for sale" there are too many covers for one, and, some are really embarassing (Mr. Moonlight which should really have been replaced with "leave my kitten alone" for one). No reply, i'm a loser and eight days a week are good tracks, but there's so much filler on it. I think it's clearly a step backwards, There is no song imo on for sale that is a match for the best on AHDN........ I mean: just look at the cover ;)

I agree with you 100% on this.  (And I would have loved to have heard Kitten on For Sale too!  I love that song!)  If we're judging album covers then yes, I'd say Beatles For Sale is one of the best but not for content and certainly not over A Hard Days Night.  But of course, everyones opinion varies.

And to answer the original question, I would have a hard time actually ranking all the albums in order of my preference.

I would put The White Album at the top (a lot of people think thats weird but its my favorite album), followed by Abbey Road and at the bottom of the list I would probably put Beatles for Sale.  As someone said earlier, it was like a step backward and there were more cover songs on it than i would have liked to see.  I'm sure some of this can be attributed to the insane touring and appearance schedules...when do you find time to write? let alone write great stuff?  Lump all the other albums somewhere in the middle of those.

OK, so I've limited my choices to the 5 albums from 1965 to 1969 who are generally considered to be the Beatles' finest. I consider MMT an EP, therefore I have not taken it into account in this poll (otherwise I would have to include "Meet The Beatles!", "Yesterday and Today" and so on, you get the point, ... I see this from a pre-CD, British-release only point of view). I have also left out all post- and pre-1973 compilations.

Let the voting begin.

That's fine with me, I like the early albums too ... alot even (I mean, I like everything the group ever recorded), I can thoroughly enjoy an album like A Hard Day's Night... But the best it ain't... (not meaning it isn't great: it is). ;)

They're more "danceable," if that's a word. So far as pop music goes, I like it loud, fast, visceral and with hooks or a lot of groove.  8)

I have a hard time with Abbey Road and Let It Be. I can't rightfully say one is my favorite with the other coming in 2nd place because they're both amazing - in fact, in the desert island thread I said I would have to just do a behind-the-back decision because I wouldn't be able to pick one without going insane.

And yes, I prefer Let It Be Naked, too.

I'm honestly surprised at the lack of love for Let It Be. It's perplexing how many fans (even band members) consider it towards the bottom of their list.

However, here people downgrade not only Let It Be but also Abbey Road. Impossible to comprehend.

Oh, absolutely. I know the band was unhappy with the production on the album, and Naked I think gets it right - it sounds live, like they're just sitting in the studio playing, and that's exactly what they were after. I like the sequencing better, too.

I know the band recorded the songs with a bad vibe and sent them out To Phil Spector with a bad vibe, but Naked almost makes the sessions sound... Fun, I guess, like the band was enjoying themselves. If you slept through all of the Let It Be movie and only woke up to watch the rooftop performance, you wouldn't think they were ready to strangle each other and this mood is caught with Naked (purposefully, of course, since they used rooftop takes in the editing of these tracks).

If the band had to end, this was a great album to go out on. I would kill for another stripped down rock, bare & raw album like this, though, especially considering some of the songs that could have been pulled from what eventually became the post-1970 solo albums.

9. Please Please Me
10. Yellow Submarine
11. With The Beatles
12. A Hard Days Night
13. Beatles For Sale
Excellent list. I can tell by reading it we have similar tastes in Beatles music. Here's mine:

  1.) Revolver
  2.) SPLHCB
  3.) Rubber Soul
  4.) White Album
  5.) Let It Be
  6.) Abbey Road
  7.) Help!
  8.) Please Please Me
  9.) With The Beatles
10.) Yellow Submarine
11.) A Hard Day's Night
12.) Beatles For Sale

When I look at this list, I see that I have Abbey Road as number 6, and that just doesn't sound humane. If Abbey Road were an album by any other band, it would be the number one album by that band for me, no question. It just shows how deep the Beatles catalogue is.

1. Revolver - experimental but concise, with 'Tomorrow Never Knows' being a case in point: so much sonic weirdness and brain-warping innovation packed into a three minute pop song. Utter genius.

2. Sgt Peppers - if only because of 'A Day in the Life'. Weaker songs than Revolver, but perhaps a greater 'spirit'. Would've been stronger if 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Penny Lane' had been included as originally intended. Must have sounded like the Second Coming if listened to in 1967 under the influence of dangerously strong psychotropic drugs.

Also contains Paul's best track (She's Leaving Home, obviously).

3. The White Album - How can anyone not like four sides of prime-Beatles? Lot's of filler (hands up who has listened to Revolution #9 more than twice?), but it has to be the most stylistically diverse album in popular music history.

It's quite strange that it has George at his best (Long Long Long Long Long Long etc) and worst (Piggies) and John at his best (Happiness is a Warm Gun) and worst (Bungalow Bill).

On the plus side, Back in the USSR rocks like a motherb*tch. Yer Blues too.

4. Rubber Soul - would be higher if I smoked weed, probably. A very 'John' album (Norwegian Wood, Girl and In My Life must have been the most emotionally complex songs ever made at that time), but Paul's bass playing is so good that it almost makes up for his entire post-Beatles solo output. Almost.

5. A Hard Days Night - scouse rock at it's finest.

6. Abbey Road - far too shiny. A triumph of artifice over art, in my opinion. Still better than just about anything else in the whole world, though.

7. Please Please Me - still sounds fresher than packet of Curiously Strong Mints after all these years. Tinny.

8. Yellow Submarine - if only because of I Am the Walrus.

9. Beatles for Sale - Maybe a little too country-fied? John sounds like he is nearly ready to take the Kurt Cobain escape route throughout.

10. Help! - Ticket to Ride and Help save it. Just.

Yesterday is quite a nice little ditty, too.

11. With The Beatles - the cover versions kick ass, but there are too many of them. Money sounds like punk-rock never needed to happen.

12. Let it Be - Phil Spector was a murderer waaaay before he shot that poor actress in the head a few years ago.

This is hard, but I'm going to post having not read the others', because I'm trying to keep it pure! Than I'll see what you guys said.

1. Revolver-- definitely. Some killer rock on this one, just hugely sophisticated.
2. With the Beatles-- totally a masterpiece of danceable, killer rock & roll.
3. White Album-- it probably doesn't actually belong way up here, but I know I listen to it a lot.
4. A Hard Day's Night-- see With the Beatles
5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Rubber Soul
7. Help
8. Beatles for Sale
9. Please Please Me
10. Abbey Road-- This is probably an unpopular one to have so low, but I think that, while slick, it's sort of uneven. (dodges thrown eggs)
11. Magical Mystery Tour
12. Let It Be
12. Yellow Submarine

That was super-difficult-- I'll probably have new ideas tomorrow....

6. Beatles For Sale
7. Rubber Soul

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Easy first for me.  This whole album means so much to me, as it tells an all-encompassing story.  All Beatles albums are incredibly true, but this one takes first for me.  If you would like to read my interpretation of what this album means, let me know.  Bobber mentioned that you typically are not interested in those kinds of things.)
2.  Let It Be (Lyrically, Dig a Pony is my favorite Beatles song.  This album is my favorite album to play in the car.)
3.  With the Beatles (Out of the earlier albums, this is my favorite.  The lyrics are so true.  The only song I don't care for is Money.)
4.  Revolver (Amazing, complex musical album.  I love to play/sing I'm Only Sleeping on the guitar.)
5.  Magical Mystery Tour (I'm counting this as an album, regardless of what you 'technical' people say.  The songs on this album flow very well, almost as well as Sgt. Peppers.)
6.  Help (I love this album, and the movie.)
7.  Abbey Road (Best closing sequence to any album, all time.)
8.  Rubber Soul
9.  A Hard Days Night
10. Please Please Me
11. Beatles For Sale
12. The White album (This album is incredible, but I ranked it low because there are several songs that I really do not enjoy listening to in any situation.)
13. Yellow Submarine

Agghh, it's so hard to hit post because I love every album!  For the spirit of this thread, I must do it!

Nothing 'technical' about it at all. It just wasn't a Beatles officially sanctioned album. You should either do the American releases or the UK ones.

Because generally the point of such lists is for folk to show their appreciation of albums in which the Beatles themselves had some say in, not the creations of mostly jolly record company execs or compilations.
Otherwise people would make lists like
1: Blue Album
2. Red Album
3. 1
4. Greatest Hits
5. Hey jude
6. Magical Mystery Tour etc etc...

I find this list making too hard as it depends on what mood Im in.

Probably my least favourite is Help. (the popiest IMO)

I think musically Revolver is the best

but I really love Please Please me as it captures The Beatles more or less live and their performance is very well honed through constant gigging.

Post by: Hombre_de_ningun_lugar on May 07, 2009, 03:43:35 PM
I want to make a ranking list of the Beatles albums. So you have to make a list with the Beatles albums in order according to your preference. Only the official British albums will be considered, so you don't have to include "Magical Mystery Tour" in your list, neither "Yellow Submarine" since it's just half a Beatles album. So only 11 albums will be included in the ranking list.

The #1 album of your list will get 10 points; #2, 9 points; #3, 8 points; #4, 7 points; #5, 6 points; #6, 5 points; #7, 4 points; #8, 3 points; #9, 2 points; #10, 1 point; and #11, 0 points.

This is my list:

1. Rubber Soul - 10 points
2. Revolver - 9
3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 8
4. Abbey Road - 7
5. The Beatles (White Album) - 6
6. Help! - 5
7. A Hard Day's Night - 4
8. Let It Be - 3
9. Beatles For Sale - 2
10. Please Please Me - 1
11. With The Beatles - 0

Note to Administrator: my "Top Beatles albums list" thread was intended to be different than this thread, since I wanted to make a ranking list with the votes of all users.

The threads were identical, so I merged them. Could you not use the lists on this thread to make your ranking list, otherwise we have two threads for everyone's favourite albums in order!

Ok. I made the list with the votes of this thread.

These are the results:

1. Revolver - 289 points
2. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 286
3. Abbey Road - 278
4. Rubber Soul - 255
5. The Beatles (White Album) - 249
6. Help! - 184
7. A Hard Day's Night - 163
8. Let It Be - 124
9. With The Beatles - 100
10. Please Please Me - 94

Number of votes: 38

Note: "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Yellow Submarine" were not considered.

I'm pretty satisfied with the final points list.  I could quibble with bits of it, but why bother?
I'd also include MMT on any list.  I understand the arguments against, but as a Beatles experience -- I scratched my older brother's copy all to hell on my Emerson suitcase, and went out and spent $5 on a new version to replace it as my first LP purchase -- well, what is there to say?  It's as much a Beatles album to me as any other.  Being five years old and digging I Am The Walrus makes me sad for today's 5-year-olds.  So very sad.
And my least favorite -- probably BFS -- is still something I've listened to more and enjoyed more than any non-Beatles album.  A-n-y.
Love to all

Sorry, but I have to fight this battle every time it comes up. MMT was an  album compiled by Capitol Records, unsanctioned by the group, containing old hits, b- sides and songs from the UK EP.

It's an official Beatles album now (since the CD era it's been included as an official album.) I don't think you can compare it to the Hey Jude "album" because MMT is made up mostly of new songs that were written specifically for the project and none of the 11 songs on the album (except for "All You Need Is Love" which was also included on Yellow Submarine) were released on any other album (not counting greatest hits compilations of course.) So I think the comparisons to other compilations albums isn't really valid.

I understand that it wasn't an original Beatles album like the others but... I don't think it's as cut and dry as you make it out to be.

Only the first 6 songs were written for MMT. None of the remaining 5 were. The only reason it was ever put out was that Americans didn't buy EP's. So, a compilation it is, and a badly put together one at that.

Dear Sir,
I'm really suprised no one mentions The Blue and Red albums, or Oldies but Goldies, or their 65 greatest Hits package. Or Rareties, or any of the Anthologies, or Rock'n'roll, Love Songs, Live at the Hollywood Bowl...
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR IS NOT A BEATLES ALBUM LIKE REVOLVER OR LET IT BE. It's an american compilation album, put together by Capitol execs, and is no more a Beatles album than Yesterday and Today etc. The Beatles had no say in either its track listing or release. It was finally released in the UK by Apple execs in the 70's after imports sold so well. But Yesterday and Got To Get You Into My Life were also released as singles in the UK in the 70's. Do we include them in our singles list? No. Because they weren't a Beatles sanctioned product issued while the band was alive. Tis the convention.
Of course everyone is going to like MMT - it's packed full of singles that had been successful long before the album's release. To include it distorts the picture. It has an unfair advantage. And it really, reaLLY F*CKS ME OFF!

Say whatever you want, MMT feels quite like a Beatles album.  Whoever at Capitol put this together for a US release had a great idea - and good on Apple for following the lead and making it "canon".  All the songs hail from their psychedelic peak era - nothing on side B feels out of place.  The whole thing is altogether much more cohesive than a compilation like the Blue or Red albums, or 1, or even Let It Be for that matter...  ;D

But all pre -Pepper Capitol albums were cribbed in this way. Shouldn't we be ranking these? Or discussing the merits of Yesterday as a single?
How cohesive it is is irrelevant really. The Beatles had nothing to do with it, which alone should discredit it as an "album."
Tradition, people, tradition. Without tradition and rules and precedent we might as well all put our underpants on our heads and dance naked down the streets. I'm trying to save your lives here.

I haven't read this whole thread so I don't know if my opinion has been stated before, but even if it has this post still has merit because it includes my list. :P

I think that although The Beatles didn't specifically choose the track listing of Magical Mystery Tour, they clearly approved of it, because they could have easily placed the double EP and singles onto Past Masters like they did with all the other EPs and singles when making the CDs, but they didn't. Also, they didn't choose the track lists themselves for their early British albums either; as far as I'm aware, George Martin did that, and the Beatles main input was just approval, much like Magical Mystery Tour. The Beatles didn't care about the artistic integrity of the album as a whole in the early days. They only cared, in a loose way, about how it flowed. In fact, once the band broke up, they almost completely stopped making single-unit "art" records and considered them mostly as collections of individual tracks. Therefore, I think Magical Mystery Tour counts as a Beatles album worthy of serious discussion. And it's one of my favorites, to boot.

Here's my list of their canon albums, not including Love and Yellow Submarine Songtrack, which are just remixes and not original material, and Past Masters, which is merely a strictly chronological collection of singles and miscellanea and not ordered to be listened to as an album in its own right, unlike Magical Mystery Tour which was ordered in a coherent way:

1. Revolver
2. Magical Mystery Tour
3. Rubber Soul
4. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. The Beatles
6. Beatles For Sale
7. Please Please Me
8. Let It Be ...Naked
9. Let It Be
10. Yellow Submarine
11. Help!
12. A Hard Day's Night
13. With The Beatles

I entirely subscribe to your views, ADoS. In fact, one may suggest and argue that Yellow Submarine should not be included any more than the US Magical Mystery Tour LP.

Be that as it may, and after having perused the whole thread from its very beginning, I think I do understand that the British issues were exclusively chosen (over the US and/or other countries compilations and/or issues) for practical, if not conventional reasons pertaining with the present thread. All things considered, it appears to be the simplest way to achieve consistency: far from the best or most comprehensive way, but the simplest.

Dear Sir,
I'm really suprised no one mentions The Blue and Red albums, or Oldies but Goldies, or their 65 greatest Hits package.

Signed
Old and Outraged
London.

Dear Old and Outraged,

Seems you are distorting the facts about MMT.  NONE of those singles were released, let alone successful, "long before the album's release."  In fact, they were all released the same year with "Hello Goodbye" and "I am the Walrus" released in the UK only three days prior to the LP's release.

The only thing odd about this whole bit was why EMI wasn't smart enough to release MMT as a LP from the get-go.

Finally, a clarifying question.  Say there was a document or other substantial proof that The Beatles knew and approved the Capital LP track listing and release ... would you be fine with MMT then?

the thing is, Kevin is correct..

If your going to use the UK albums and not the US ones in a best of list, then you cant include MMT as it wasnt an album in the UK

I know this is an old discussion, but I'd like to share my point of view.

The Beatles recording sessions can be divided in 12 different periods. Each period is mainly represented by an album. The only period that didn't give an official album in UK was the 9th one, corresponding to the recordings for the Magical Mystery Tour EP. So if we don't count the Magical Mystery Tour LP is like we are missing one important stage of the Beatles career.

On the other side, the Yellow Submarine LP didn't have its own recording sessions, since its songs were recorded during Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour sessions. Thus, I think that Yellow Submarine is less a proper album than Magical Mystery Tour, no matter where the records were released.

I have a hard time too, once I try to go past my top 2, which are Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. After that it tends to change frequently.

MMT might technically be a compilation, but all the songs on it were at the time recent and not released on any other album, so that makes it a regular album in my book. So I included it.

1. Magical Mystery Tour
2. Abbey Road
3. Let It Be
4. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. Rubber Soul
6. Revolver
7. A Hard Day's Night

Really difficult apart from the First choice. Abbey Road is The Difinitive Beatles Album surely? Everything else before is the long and winding road to perfection? Anyway, Here goes:

Abbey Road
Revolver
Sergeant Pepper
Rubber Soul
A Hard Day's Night
The Beatles (white Album)
Help!

beyond this I cannot say.. apart from the fact that compilation albums do not count. The blue or red albums are great (obviously) but they are bastard sons of fantastic inspiration caught and translated in a specific space and time. They don't belong in anyone's list.. It's like putting the invention of the bacon sandwich above the invention of the sandwich itself! ;sorry

By the way.. I bought the following domains last year in the hope that I could engage (in some way).. Beatles Fans to help celebrate the Beatles 50th Birthday? I have been underwhelmed at the lack of response to my efforts (so far) to share these domains with Beatles fans.. Having read some of the comments on this thread though I can see there is some real passion here.. especially partisan to certain albums, so I am hoping that this list might spark a response?

Revolver, Sergeant Pepper, Rubber Soul and Magical Mystery Tour.. seem to top Mr Kite's Bill.. so if there is anybody out there who would like a 50/50 share in a Beatles album site.. at no cost other than time and dedication.. then let me know. (Abbey Road Gurus need to move quick, cos this site is the most powerful of them all).. All is paid for.. domain Reg, hosting etc etc. All you need do is dedicate a couple of hours a week to update / co-own your own Beatles Website?? I can't run them all.. that is my problem. I cover the costs ..you run the site.. and we split any profits. If you want to donate 40% of the profits to a charity, then great. I'm up for that. I just don't want to waste the opportunity in a year that they could be put to constructive use and help us get our message out there to take the corporate edge of this year's forthcoming celebrations..

Anyway.. if you are adept (or could be) at using wordpress, then I'll even set it up for you.. If you want to run a Beatles Album site, just let me know. The album sites I own are available on a first come first served basis providing you are dedicated enough to maintain and run the site .. and keep it TOTALLY Beatles-centric. Heh! Relax...mere cranial flatulence. An omission by error.

It would be 9 1/2 for me. Yes, I like 'Let It Be' better. Better songs, imo. 'Abbey Road' has some beautiful moments, especially with George's songs, which I think make the album and represent some of his best work with the group. But compared to their previous stuff most of these songs are relatively weak to me. Some are embarrassingly bad - 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' - 'Octopus' Garden' - 'Oh, Darling' - please.

When it was first released I thought it was great. Now I view it as a sad documentation of their inability to function as a creative force any longer. They seemed to pull together to put up one last, slick, masterfully produced album of throwaways and/or incomplete, albeit brilliant, snippets of what could have been good songs if they were only worked a little more. Together, as a group. Again, George's songs are great - But where was Lennon/McCartney? Nowhere, man.

I know that many - or most - will disagree with me. Just my opinion.

5. Rubber Soul
6. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
7. Let It Be
8. Please Please Me
9. Beatles For Sale
10. A Hard Day's Night

YS is only half an album, but is still very good. And I tend to favor the later Beatles, over the early Beatles.

Well... after reading the staunch opinions stated in some of the previous posts, I hope my list doesn't cause a riot or get me banned but... here it is:

1. Rubber Soul (U.S. Version)
2. Revolver (UK)
3. Abbey Road
4. The Beatles
5. Sgt. Pepper
6. Let It Be
7. Help! (U.S.)
8. A Hard Day's Night (U.S.)
9. Meet The Beatles
10. MMT
11. The Beatles For Sale
12. Yellow Sub

I "discovered" the Beatles thru their U.S. Capitol releases and they are near and dear to my heart and ears. IMO, the US Rubber Soul is better than its UK counterpart due to the addition of I've Just Seen A Face and It's Only Love. For me, Drive my Car and What Goes On just don't "fit" as well as the two listed previously. Nowhere Man and If I Needed Someone would be great additions to the US version if Capitol had included 14 tracks.

I did not include the US Lp, Yesterday... And Today, because it had no direct UK counterpart. Otherwise, I would have listed it in the top four.

Well, they did make an attempt at putting out a good album. They had their problems with one another, yet still went for it. One must give them that.

As much as I bought into it when it was released, nowadays I have little or no desire to listen to it. Like I said, sad.

It has its moments. It's there. It's much beloved by many. Enough said by me.

Magical Mystery Tour counts, Kevin.  It's considered canon, even if some Brits and Aussies don't agree!   :police:

Mono Masters in this set.  Past Masters was in the 2012 stereo vinyl box set and of course the 2009 stereo CD box.

There's something almost magical in the way that people listened slightly differently to The Beatles around the world!

At the moment my top 3 would be:
1. Please Please Me
2. Let It Be
3. The White Album
...and I'd have the two BBC compilations at 4 and 5 if I may.

Yes Im not saying the Capitol albums werent good but I think its true that you like what you grew up with (generally) I cant believe they left the false start on there though  ha2ha

Its like Let It Be, I always prefer the one I grew up with (not Naked) Naked sounds empty to me without the stuff Spector put on there, I prefer Winding Road with the Spector stuff (also I Me Mine) and the chatter/Dig It etc

But maybe if Id grown up listening to Naked.........well.........

My top three is pretty predictable.

1. Rubber Soul
2. Revolver
3. Abbey Road

After that it's harder to pin down an exact order. I'd currently probably plump for

4. A Hard Days Night
5. Sgt Peppers
6. Help
7. The White Album
8. Please Please Me
9. Beatles for Sale
10. Let it Be
11. With the Beatles
12. Yellow Submarine

But really the difference between these 8 albums is pretty narrow. Any of them (with the exception of the half album Yellow Submarine) could move up or down a few places depending on my mood.

While not in the original canon I also think the first BBC live record would rank pretty well. I find it a really enjoyable album.

I'm with you, Moogmodule, there's barely the width of a cigarette paper between any of them.

Music radio is such in Britain (it truly is awful) that if a DJ announces he, it is always a he, is going to play a Them song, he will play one of three Them songs ('Gloria', 'Here Comes The Night' or 'Baby Please Don't Go' - absolute NO exceptions), and ONLY one of those three songs.

This policy is carried through for pretty much any act you care to mention and is usually combined with a jingle suggesting that his particular radio station offers 'more musical choice'!

On any given day, indeed in any given hour, you'll be hard pressed NOT to hear 'House of the Rising Sun', 'Groovin'', 'A Whiter Shade of Pale', 'San Francisco' or 'Something In The Air' on your radio dial.

As such, I'm almost obliged to listen to the margins/the obscure/b-sides over a-sides etc., hence my slightly perverse Top 3.

I find these difficult to do as I almost see their music as one progressive album that goes on for 6 years or so. I think Revolver is my favorite though... but it's like oldbrownshoe says about the width of a cigarette paper!

I too cant do this

Its too dificult and I dont see the benefit of doing it

I mean where would I put Beatles For Sale ?

It has some covers but it also has a couple of my all time favourites on there, Im A Loser, Every Little Thing and No Reply, also how can I vote it low when it holds such treasured memories of Christmas all those years ago in 1964, an innocent time with my family, Mum & Dad, Beatles For Sale was part of Christmas, I love it

I just cant vote any of these 12 LP's higher than each other, they all hold very special memories for me, each one represents a stage of my growing up.

I dont include Mystery Tour mainly because I absolutely loved the double EP, its was different than an LP and cheaper, it had a book with drawings and a story, some people say EMI were dumb not to make it an LP like Capitol, but I loved the EP to bits, so for me it will never be an album, whenever I think of MMT it is a double EP with a booklet. (and a sprinkle of pure magic)  :)

PS it also displays my favourite ever picture of The Beatles on the front.

The Magical Mystery Tour Blu-ray/DVD package came with a reproduction of the mono vinyl EP.  As a Beatles collector I like having it even though I only played it once because I'm too lazy to get up and flip a record every 5 minutes.

I could divide the Beatles albums in three categories:

Excellent albums: Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road.

Very good albums: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, and The White Album.

Good albums: Please Please Me, With The Beatles, Beatles For Sale, and Let It Be.

I don't take Yellow Submarine into account because it's just half a Beatles album.

for me with the exception of YS they are all 10/10

due in a big way to the way they changed the musical horizon and culture of the time

I never understand the poor rating for Let It Be, brilliant tracks throughout that album   ;D

That's a pretty good division. Although in doing my list I avoided trying to come up with a concept of what was better and just listed the ones I generally preferred. As others have said, there is such little between their albums that's it's very hard to make a sensible ranking. And the different styles make it harder. Abbey Road is a totally different beast to Hard Days night. And Sgt Pepper is different to all the other Beatle albums. Very hard to sensibly compare in a "best" sense.

That Excellent/VG/Good list doesn't really recognise the impact of each LP at the time.

If it did, the most successful LP in terms of weeks at No. 1 in the UK, 'Please Please Me', would not be in the lower category and, given the mania that surrounded their first film, neither would 'A Hard Day's Night'.

Also in Britain, though probably not in the States, I think 'Sgt. Pepper's' would now be more likely to be in the 'very good' rather than the 'excellent' list.

I love every Beatles album; only Yellow Submarine is disposable in my opinion. My ratings are only relative, because I do consider that some Beatles albums are better than others.

About the impact of each album that oldbrownshoe mentioned, I think it's an important factor, but I've mainly considered the quality (always according to my ears) of the actual content.

4. Abbey Road
5. A Hard Day's Night
6. Help
7. Sgt. Pepper's
8. Beatles For Sale
9. Let It Be
10. With The Beatles
11. Please Please Me
12. Yellow Submarine

Wow I'm drained just doing that  2ch

Finally got round to do this properly and, of course, it is heavily reliant on what I like right now.

1. A Hard Day's Night (propelled up many places by the anniversary and the re-release of the film)
2. With The Beatles (picked up on CD for £2 a month ago, forgot how great it is)
3. Please Please Me
4. Revolver
5. White Album
6. Beatles For Sale (this will inevitably move up on the 50th anniversary as I plan to get a new CD of it on that day)
7. Let It Be
8. Abbey Road
9. Help!
10. Rubber Soul
11. Sgt. Pepper's
12. Yellow Submarine

Despite Sgt. Pepper's being so low, I still think it's better than anything in the last 42 years.

Yep, going to put 'Beatles For Sale' at No. 1 for the time being, and all the others can drop down a place.

I find it incredible that, with the exception of 'Yellow Submarine', and even then I bet some kids love it because of the film, a case can be made for pretty much any of their albums being the best one.

Yes, I think that's a pretty good list. I especially agree with the Top 3, even though Rubber Soul is my favorite album, Sgt. Pepper and Revolver are also excellent and probably more revolutionary. However, in my opinion Abbey Road is better than The White Album; and I think that A Hard Day's Night and Help! are better than Please Please Me and Let It Be.
