Beatles Commercialization
« on: November 26, 2009, 09:03:52 PM »

Does anyone have a take on why it seems that suddenly there are so many Beatles products, shows, songs in commercials etc.  of the Bealtes where before it was a bit more spread out and less random? Is it the new management of Apple or the act that they're getting more comfortable selling out? I mean, it just seems a bit much lately and like they're not quite as into protecting their legacy. Seems like it all started when Neil stepped down. Somehow it worries me. Or am I just being paranoid? Just was wondering if anyone else noticed this.

I don't know about all the products etc. but as for the commericals featuring Beatles music... does it have something to do with Michael Jackson's death? As we know he was massively in debt at the time he died and perhaps his estate is trying to get some money for his children through the Beatles catalogue.

Marketing support for the new Beatle products (Rock Band, Remasters, etc.)?

I don't know, it just seems a bit much lately. As I sit here and watch a commercial for the remasters. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as it's their music, but it's like they are suddenly everywhere! I just hope they keep the products at a minimum. I like that they've always protected their music and legacy.

Yeah it could have to do with Michael Jackson's death. at least that's what I think. I mean all of the sudden their music is everywhere. Seems a bit fishy to me.

Well, we've had the remasters sets and Rock Band. Apple will have known that this was going to happen a good year ago, possibly more. Step up the commercialisation process by issuing more licences to manufacturers. The more product on the market, the more awareness. Basic marketing. Same goes for the sudden popularity of Beatles songs in commercials and in TV programmes. The more awareness, the bigger the sales. Makes perfect sense.

I think it's strange that some people complain about some of the products on sale now. Did you see some of the stuff available in the '60's? Tacky isn't the word. Now very expensive collectors items.

Apple don't exist as a favour to us, they are a money making enterprise, like all businesses. Don't expect them to be different, just because it's your favourite band.

The stuff in the sixties didn't have anything to do with them though. I mean, it was beyond their control at the beginning. I get that it's a business, but that's not what worries me. I just think a big part of why people connect to that band so much is that they always got the fact that it was about the music. They were always very protective about their image and how their music was used because it wasn't just a money making opportunity for them. They weren't just a product for sale. I mean, ultimately, it's up to them how they want to look at what they created and decide how to use it. I have just always appreciated the fact that they weren't using it just to make an extra buck at the expense of their fans. We love the music because it's special, so what's the big deal if we appreciate that they feel that way too and try to preserve that feeling by not saturating us with product. Like Yoko and her business of selling all things Lennon. Was he a human being ever or made in a factory? I can't remember.

Quote from: Paul McCartney
Somebody said to me, 'But The Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. John [Lennon] and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. And they've both said this (John and Paul) but again, that was the beginning. They were kids. After a while it did become something a bit more meaningful to them. As anything you choose to spend your life doing should. That's called being a grown up and having convictions. If your job is just a job, then I feel sorry for you. You can quote a thousand more comments that point to the fact that they were very proud and protective of their art in later years. And you can also find tons of Lennon quotes that contradict everything he ever said, so that was a whole different matter.

As much as I would like to think that the Beatles (or any artist really) cared more about the dignity of their music than money, I just don't think it's the case. (Not saying they care MORE about money than music). Personally, I don't see the problem with 'selling out'. If the person is doing it on their own free-will and they don't have a problem with it, go ahead. It's their music anyway, and they should do with it what they please.

(Now, if it's JUST Apple that's behind all this and Paul/Ringo/Yoko/Olivia don't have a say, well that's a different story)

I think Apple has a lot to do with it. I think Neil really worked hard to keep the band out of a lot of unnecessary projects. He got it. The other four never really had a head for those things in the first place, so to leave it up to them...I don't know. I just never want them to turn into the Rolling Stones. Ha.

I must agree, it's a pretty crappy cover but I think that commercial as a whole is fairly effective.

Personally though I think that I'd like to see a lesser known Beatles song in a commercial, although it probably wouldn't work with marketing and all that stuff, it would be interesting to see if a "casual" listener could pick it up.

Just saw a new commercial today for a fitness video game being hawked to the tune of: Revolution. A cover of course, but come one already. It's enough.

I think what BM said sums it up.  Apple is big business now and a far cry from what it was in 1968.
