How to copy Ringo's Drumming Style?
« on: November 03, 2004, 04:43:22 AM »

I have a set of drums that hopefully I will get to put to use once again but I've been wondering if anyone knows where I can get some info on copying Ringo's style of drumming because some Beatles songs that I play to I can't quite copy his style or get the rythem.  Is there any webpages or does anyone have any tips as to how to get my drumming to sound closer to his.

Thanks,

Mr. Kite

Not that I know of.

It takes a lot of listening.  Remember he was left handed and did his rolls backwards.  He also really swung on that hi hat.

I drum open handed which means that I drum right handed, but my left hand plays the hats while my right hand plays the snare. This seems to help with alot of Ringos fills. I've listened to and copied Ringo for so long that i've adopted his type of style in my playing. Sometimes I have to concentrate on not playing fills like him. Just try to play his style for awhile and learn your paradiddles.

About ten cents a pound.  :D

A roll, of varying numbers of strokes (11-, 13- etc...almost always odd)

Actually I'm sorry I gave the wrong definition.

A paradiddle is actually two diddles.

Thank you Mr.C., I see now. The paradiddle is the twice that of a singlediddle...LOL :D. My hats off to drummers keeping time with alternating beats and all, hell I can barely keep time patting my foot when I play my guitar.

Yes but it screwed me for dancing.  Others hear a beat and want to move their legs and such, me I'm tapping out the beat with my hands and feet.  And since your feet are actually going a different direction at the same time (same as your hands) my inability to dance is clear to imagine.  Like Jerry Lewis playing a poor spastic.

This is interesting - try this link: http://www.pas.org/About/HOF/starr.cfm

Now as mentioned earlier, Ringo is left handed (but plays drums right handed) but his rolls and fills are played from the right side to the left, ie left handed!

Not the information you are probably looking for, but interesting enough.

And BTW, paradiddle is a fancy term for a drum pattern using alternate right and left hands.

Here's another clue for you all; the Walrus was Paul...
