Title: Halloween!
Post by: Mairi on September 17, 2005, 03:32:38 AM
I know Halloween isn't for a while yet, but if you're anything like me you probably start planning a costume over the summer. So this is a thread to talk about your costumes for this year, or reminisce about costumes of the past.

This year I'm thinking of going as either Marilyn Monroe (if I can find a wig) or the Dancing Queen (I have my cousin's old disco outfit from the Seventies).

I think it's a real cop-out to buy your costume in stores, what do you guys think?

If I went to a costume party or something, I'd buy (now that I got a job) a Jay Turser violin bass and a very cheap suit.

My mom used to make my costumes. This year I'm going as a cat. I have ears and a tail, now i just need something to go with it.

As for buying costumes in stores, it all depends on what you're looking for. Last year I went as Velma from Scooby-Doo. I oculdn't find the actual costume so I had to pull it together from different stores.

Man am I glad it's over! Too much scary stuff on tv this month. And I'm into that stuff so I tend to watch a lot of it. But now I'm to the point where if I watch one more horror movie I'll have to sleep with the lights on! I just may have to anyway because I just watched The Exorcist tonight. I don't know how people think that's NOT scary! It's the worst for me. My heart almost fails. I have to put on the comedy channel or something before I go to bed.

Best line from The Exorcist that is NOT obscene: What an excellent day for an excorcism.

The other great line is highly offensive, so I won't write it. But...it begins with Your mother....;D

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday besides Christmas, because you get free candy and you get to dress up. I'm really into Halloween costumes and I make my own every year. This year, I'm planning to go as Carrie from the Stepen King novel/movie, complete with fake tiara, sash, and "blood" soaked prom dress. I hope that this wil be the year I will win the Best Costume prize at my school's Halloween dance that I so rightfully deserve.

What about the rest of you? What are you going to be for Halloween? What are you going to do? I don't know what I'm going to do this year. 16 might be a little too old for trick-or-treating, but I don't want to stay home because no one ever comes. I might do a little trick or treating if my younger cousin comes along, that way I'll have an excuse for going. I also hope to go to the haunted house that the community sets up every year at a town near mine.

oh yeah, I thought this was funny:

Top 10 Reasons Halloween is Better than Sex...

#10: You are guaranteed to get at least a little something in the sack.
#9: If you get tired, you can wait 10 minutes and go at it again.
#8: The uglier you look, the easier it is to get some.
#7: You don't have to compliment the person who gives you some.
#6: It's OK when the person you're with fantasizes you're someone else, because you are.
#5: Fifty years from now you'll still enjoy candy.
#4: If you don't like what you get you can always go next door.
#3: It doesn't matter if the kids hear you moaning and groaning.
#2: Less guilt the morning after.

And the number one reason halloween is better than sex:

YOU CAN DO THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD!!!

Not much Halloween over here on Europe's mainland... Although there's something going on with pumpkins the last few years. On the other hand we celebrate St. Maarten (Saint Martin) on November 11th. Little kids sing songs at the front door with lanterns and get their share, which is candy most of the time.

Aw, why do you hate dressing up? It's one of my favorite things in the world! Probably 'cause we have a Tickle Trunk full of vintage clothes, costume pieces, and other things... plus, it's one day when people don't make fun of me for my unique style?

Do you think you're too cool to dress up? Is that it? :(

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. It's just so fun. Plus I love the fall. I mean, I used to love it. In California it's like every other month. Which sucks.

No, I'm not too cool for anything. I just feel uncomfortable in anything else than jeans and a shirt/sweater. Even when everyone else is dressed up.

Not my generation. I miss Guy Fawkwes. Think, in 200 years american kids might be burning effigies of Bin Laden singing "terrorist terrorist terrorist, dollar for the terrorist."
I regret the passing of some of our culture. I don't want an homogeneous world. But hey ho, you can't p*ss in the wind. Hey ninny ninny...

Yeah - Halloween is a sort of kids thing over here in England. I mean, people dress up and go to the clubs - but this sort of thing happens anyhow. I used to really enjoy Halloween - it's a pretty creative celebration :) But now I just see it for the shameless money scam it really is (In England anyhow) ...

We used to get my dad's old clothes, stuff them with paper, make a head (well my big brother made the head) then we'd put him in a wheelbarrow and take him around the shops singing "Guy Guy Guy, penny (literally) for the Guy." Then we'd take it home and burn it on the bonfire. Then out came the fireworks. And this was the only time we'd see fireworks, and we would have saved hard, so this is special.
Oh happy days. And it ALWAYS rained.

I'd sooner see an homogenous world than the conflict-ridden, prejudiced-deranged one we currently live in. In such a world, there would be a return of interest in the old things anyway. But, after all the rubbish associated with difference had passed away. Nothing wrong with difference, but the world seems to think that conflict and prejudice MUST accompany difference. In reality, there are differences, but there are no differences. We are also so very similar the world over.

It might seem like a silly example, but on Star Trek The Next Generation they 'go back in time' with the ships computer to experience the past. But, a sanitized one. In the distant future, people may recover the past and differences, but not attach deep meaning to them. Not with a computer (but, who knows?). But, by reclaiming the past. Like those huge battle scenes reenacted.

Hopefully, globalisation will take us to such a world eventually.

I think also in a similar way that political correctness will do it's job of helping to eradicate racism, sexism, etc. in time. Then, political correctness will disappear because it's done it's job. Along with it will go the excesses of political correctness.

Good luck Mairi! Your costume sounds completely ghastly! I hope you win! I used to do the dress up thing for halloween and later for some of the adult halloween parties, now I enjoy dressing the kids up and and taking them out to haunted house's, parties, and trick or treat nights. I not only love it because of halloween but I get all the horror movies out that I like to watch and scare the hell out of my "oh so tough" son and nephew...... :D , and it is also fall. You know, leaves changing, a chill in the air, and all that. Pretty this time of the year. Best of all it segways right into Thanksgiving and Christmas season :)

I am Sorry Mairi. I let myself get drawn in and forgot to let it go. I also forgot my own advice to ignore the post's from that someone.
Anyway, back on the subject. Do you have haunted house's real and fake, By fake in mean, you pay for someone in costume to jump out and scare you, like we do here in the states? I quit going to them when all of them started having chainsaws running all the time. Not because chainsaws scare me, it just an annoying sound and the last haunted house I went to, someone grabbed my arm, I turned around to a kid of about 8 looking up at me and through his mask I heard him say "sorry mister". I knew it was time to go. :D

Now, how about those haunted house's Mairi? Any in Nova Scotia? Does anyone have any scary stories to share about halloween, or a really cool hauted house they visited? I read on an forgotten-abandoned Ohio site that someone has bought an old Ohio poor house and turned it into one of the premiere spook hause's. It is an old gothic looking brick building, spooky by itself alone. Here's the link to the story and some cool photo's.http:// http://www.forgottenoh.com/Nightmares/nightmares.html

I never visited a real haunted house, but when I was little, everyone in my school used to believe that the old broken-down house next to our playground was a witch's house and that ghosts live there.
My dad once met a ghost, though! Of my papa. It was a few days after he died and my dad went into the barn and he could hear my papa's voice saying "It's going to be okay..".

No they're not. They're fun.

Well, at least the subtile, creepy ones. Movies with ghosts appearing in mirrors or where people see the reflection of a face in the water and then turn around and see there's nobody there. Stuff like that. I can't get enough of those movies.

I really don't like those slasher, chainsaw massacre, Freddy Krueger type of movies though. I hate those.

I'm such a Scrooge this year. I'm hiding upstairs with all the downstairs lights out, so I can write. Normally I read a book and answer the door with treats and toys. I save up all the little gizmos people mail to me over the year, and little gifts, and give it away at Halloween. I think it makes a nice change from candy (I let the kids pick what they want). But this year I felt antisocial. Tea and quiet, that's what I want.

I took a girl I babysit out trick-or-treating. It was fun, but the last thing I need is a big bag of candy.

I beat my own record for costumes this year, with a total of four.
-Princess Jasmine for a fund-raiser my school held
-"Snakes on a Stewardess" for my school dance
-A pirate to school on Wednesday
-Cleopatra for trick-or-treating.

Of course, October is the "Witching Month" of Halloween.  We celebrate big-time down here.  It's probably one of our favorite holidays to have parties and hayrides.
So..............everyone.............contribute your Halloween pictures and party details........whatever.
Here's me two years ago at a Halloween party.............
I'll have pictures this year of me as the Fire Witch from the party we're going to next Saturday.

Well, all.............the parties start next Saturday for me.  The annual "Candy and Jerry's Halloween Costume Ball" next weekend at their house just, "really", across the woods from us.  This is the 6th time we're going to this one and it's a BLAST!!!!
Then.........Oct. 24/25, the Knights of Columbus at our church........any of you who are Catholic will know what this is.........are doing their annual "Haunted Hayride".  It's down in the woods from our parish church, along a trial, and there are different "stations" that we build with whatever horror theme we want...........nothing "satanic".  I've been involved in this for the last three years and now I've been promoted to "head witch" of the Witch's Station.  We have to decorate and decide on a theme, all within good taste.  I've got my new "recruits" for this year and we're gonna have a blast!!!  The guys in the parish who have tractors and trailers are the drivers along the trial.  We put bails of hay on the trailers and have about 20 paying customers on each ride.  It's a big fund raiser for our church.  There's also a few games and concessions at the top of the trial where the people pay for the ride.  I WILL post pictures of this event.  My friend Candy always plans her costume party the weekend ahead of the Hayride so I can "debute" my new costume for the season.
And...................on Oct 31, instead of going "trick-o-treating", Candy, again, is having her on little hayride thru her woods and fields for her grandkids and kids and whoever in her extended family.  Her older kids do the "spooking" in the woods and fields, so it's pretty fun.  Last year was very cool, and it was so much fun to curl up on a trailer full of hay with a warm blanket and ride thru the woods.........
Ok...........enough from me..........I CELEBRATE Halloween.  Next to Christmas, my favorite!!!!

I've never been big on Halloween (I know I'm weird :) ), but this year I've been encouraged to dress up for school, since I'm doing clinic work with little kids.  I am considering going as a hippie (flower), an idea inspired by my love for the Beatles!

We don't really have Halloween here. The last few years there have been some (usually commercially driven) attempts at introducing it to our country, but I don't think it'll ever really catch on. Seems like fun though.

Funny thing is that I've never celebrated Hallowe'en or gone trick-or-treating, ever... when I was young, it wasn't celebrated where I lived, and when I moved to a country where it was celebrated, I thought I was too old for it ;D And for the past 2 years I've always had an exam on the day. Worked like a dog this morning for three hours with my "witches" in our witches' station.  The place was grown up with weeds and thrash and i just about cried when I saw it.  But four other witches and me with rakes, shovels, weedeaters and "determination" had it whipped clean in less than three hours.  And I even dug a huge 2 foot deep pit for our fire next weekend...............just pray dad comes home and we can pull everything off for the hayride.

I was at FNU's house, which is up a couple of streets from my house, so I could walk home. So, I borrowed her sister's cape which is black sheer fabric and blue sparkly spider webs all over. So, I'm running home since my sister is coming home. =( As I was running, a lady and her son were outside and the saw me! I stopped to say hi and the lady asked if I was running away from anyone. I said, "No. I  borrowed the cape to scare me dad." She started laughing really hard and said, "Good luck with that!" and I said, "I will!" I told her to have a nice day, left, and I could still hear her laughing! Then, a few seconds later, her son starts cackling! When I got home, my daddy saw me and goes, "What are you wearing?" I'm just like, "A cape..." and walked away. The really funny thing is that my pockets were full of candy and there's a week until Halloween!

I am sooooooooooooo tired from last night and have one more night to be the "Fire Witch".  After all is said and done, I'll post up pictures.  We had a great turnout last night.  Sold nearly 30 trailer loads of people.........each trailer carries about 20 people........so it was a great fund raising success.  Hope tonight is as good as last night.
We had four tractors and four trailers attached, so one would load, go, return, unload......all in a revolving manner.  Alot of work, but alot of fun.

Here's some urban legend stuff from my hometown of Lake Ronkonkoma:

" On the frozen Lake Ronkonkoma a young woman breathed her last when the faithful ice had failed her and her fateful die was cast. She was grieving for the husband that was killed before they wed, who was murdered by a white man ere they shared their marriage bed.' It has said that every year , another male drowns in the waters of this Lake , and every year a family grieves and holds a wake from the wrath and vengeance of eons past of the Lady of the Lake"

I grew up hearing versions of that story. Pretty funny. Needless to say, no one ever wanted to swim in that lake...but that had more to do with it being disgustingly polluted. Slime and green water way scarier than some murderous ghost lady.  ??)

Any ghost stories in your local areas? They always seem to pop up here and there. People are supersticious by nature I guess.

Boo! With Halloween in 19 days, 10 hours, and 55 minutes if I counted correctly from when I started typing this post, I want to know what everyone's doing!

Well, Halloween's on a Saturday this year, so I think that the art of trick or treating happens on the day before halloween this year, but I have to check. I'm going trick or treating as a lumberjack. I already have a hard hat.

I hope to go out! But I'm not sure what I'm doing yet.

I either want to be a Beatle.  ha2ha Which I think would be really cool.

Or Dorothy from the wizard of oz! Because I just realized, I never got to be one when I was younger. I don't know why I never was her? So maybe I'll do that. I love tirck or treating! So fun!!

I have a ridiculous costume idea that may involve me dressing up as a man......with a beard. The thing is, my hubby wants to invite me to his work's Halloween party (not sure if I'm going, but maybe).

I have never met any of his coworkers before, so would it be incredibly WEIRD for a female to dress up as a bearded man to meet new people at a work party? Would this make the stupidest first impression ever???

Halloween's my birthday.  I'll be 65.  I'm enjoying my last few days of being 64.

Last year the college students from across the street surprised me with a Happy Halloween Birthday Cake.  We had an impromptu party.  We had candy and cake for the kids who came to our door and Champagne for the college kids and older folks who dropped by.

The college students who surprised me with the cake got married and moved to Alaska.  A couple of days ago when my wife and I returned home from shopping, there was a box on our doorstep that had a Halloween Birthday cake in it.  It was from our friends the college students who got married and moved to Alaska. They wrote, "We didn't forget you!".  They must have contacted a local bakery and had it delivered.

A wonderful young couple.  We wish them many happy years together.

Have a Happy Halloween everyone!

Things would certainly have been different if Gomez married Morticia Frump's older sister Ophelia as had been arranged.

But Gomez thought Morticia was cool too.

Morticia was her sister's maid of honor at the wedding, but Ophelia ran off.  Gomez married Morticia on the spot. Gomez remarked how beautiful she looked in her long black dress.  Morticia replied:  "I'll never wear another."

Just got home from FNU's house. We went trick-or-treating together. We went to a graveyard and gave candy to the spirits. Then, I went to FNU's house and we watched a good amount of the Night of the Living Dead. If it's supposed to be scary, it fails. I couldn't stop laughing.

Night of the Living Dead is a classic. It actually has a plot and characters. And it actually contains intelligent social commentary. But I suppose without all the flash and special effects, this is lost on the current generation who are used to big budget remakes and the like. Just sayin'. ;D Anyway, I was watching it earlier, and it's still damn creepy. Very atmospheric and well done for the small budget.

Great film.......Nice pics S, that's hardly a scary costume though! Where the fangs and stuff? lol

They look very handsome, Kelley! We bought a bumblebee costume for little Bear, but he hated it. He spent the entire time chasing his wings. After about 30 seconds we took it off.  ;)

I can just picture that! That's probably what the Lab on the left would do, if I could even get something like that on her! She looks mellow here but it's rare for her to sit still long enough for a picture. It helped that Kelsie was standing behind me telling her to say. LOL
