Title: the song Help
Post by: Billy Shears on August 13, 2004, 06:46:17 PM
this may be an obvious question, but, has anyone ever heard of another song, that put the harmony vocals before the lead. i mean george and paul sing the line, then john...i've always enjoyed that unique quality in this song....are there any others you can think of?

What about 'Louie,Louie' from the Kingsmen? Would that count?

How so?  It really only has a lead singer.  Unless you are thinking of Animal House, in which case EVERYbody is singing EVERYwhere.  :D

Your right! I misunderstood the question, but now i'm back on the beat. I'll find one eventually.

I don't think so...I believe it was another Fab innovation at the time.

Why?

I guarantee you won't find any earlier.  It was one of the aspects noted about the song when it came out.  It sounds so casual and easy now but people simply did not think in that way up until then.

You *think*?

Like what for example?

Okay, okay I should have given some examples! I actually thought these songs were very well known. Maybe you guys are too young! Now I hope I understand what is being discussed in this thread and I'm not totally off, but if I am, I offer my most humble apologies. Well, here we go:

Stop in the Name of Love-The Supremes
Please Mr. Postman-The Marvelettes (The Beatles covered this btw)
Someday We'll Be Together-The Supremes
Ain't Nothin' Like the Real Thing-Marvin and Tammy
Jimmy Mack-Martha Reeves and the Vandellas(Martha being their favourite American singer at the time!)
Baby I Need Your Loving-The Four Tops

Now if any of these came out after Help!, or are incorrect then just knock them off the list. I'm going by memory here which isn't always very reliable! :D
Oh, and I'm assuming everyone here knows that the boys were big fans of Motown and were most likely influenced by the music in some way.

Most came out after, not sure about Stop In The Name Of Love.  Obviously Please Mr Postman came out before, but based on the Beatle version I'm not sure it's the same sort of concept.  The background people were singing whole verses while the lead player kind of floats along on top.  Still, you brought up some possibly viable example, and I appreciate it.
