You guys have some good points! I agree with Kev that it sounds more like Paul than George.

In the Hey Bulldog video, John is shown with the Gibson SG guitar, but George is shown playing rhythm I think? That may be a tip-off. One other thing that makes me think it's John is that he often used little partial chord forms and double notes in his solos, like in You Can't Do That. Paul tended to be more single-notey, but who knows?

Don't forget that the Hey Bulldog vid is actually the lads doing Lady Madonna with Bulldog playing over the vision. So the instruments they are playing may not be the Bulldog ones.   Some thing like that lol

Hey Stevie,

I seem to recall reading that they only filmed HB, but maybe they filmed both songs?

I think it was the opposite: they were playing and singing "Hey Bulldog", and used the film as a promo video of "Lady Madonna".

Yeah you guys are right. I did some research on wiki on HB and it was that. For some reason I thought it was mixed up with LM.

Awesome song but

I saw again Paul doing it in the Concert for George. I think he brings it to life better in that performance. Raises the song a little more in my stakes.

Lewisohn's Abbey Road Sessions says George wasn't present for I Will. Paul played acoustic and mouthed the bass parts on 16 September, 68

John plays lead guitar in "The Ballad Of John And Yoko", though there's no a solo. Shouldn't it be included in the list?

Paul played lead guitar on Drive My Car.  George played bass.

As far as I know, Paul played bass on "Drive My Car", though it's also true that Paul played the solo with a slide guitar.

I think there's an usual confusion about George playing bass on "Drive My Car", because of this George's quote from 1977:

Quote
"If Paul had written a song, he'd learn all the parts and then come in the studio and say 'Do this.' He'd never give you the opportunity to come out with something. But on 'Drive My Car' I just played the line, which is really like a lick off 'Respect,' you know, the Otis Redding version. And I played the line on the guitar and Paul laid that with me on the bass. We laid that track down like that. We played the lead part later on top of it."

I think the phrase "with me on the bass" was misunderstood. I think George meant that he played the line on the guitar, and Paul did the same with the bass, as it can be heard in the song.

I think that will continue to be debated, Andres.  The isolated bass track reveals a bassline a bit different from Paul's usual style and ability...

Recorded a few weeks later during the Rubber Soul Sessions was I'm Looking Through You.  For a comparison, here is Paul's isolated bass...

Yes, the style of the bassline is different than the usual Paul's playing. But remember that in "Drive My Car" the idea of playing that way came from George. According to George, he played the line with his guitar and it seems that Paul did the same with the bass. If you listen to the song, you'll see that bass and guitar play the same line through the track. I think that's the fingerprint of the song.

Nevertheless, you're right, the theme will still be subject of debate.

While George was servicable on the bass, I think DMC is Paul. I don't think George could pull it off

Don't forget John played the first lead in Long Tall Sally.

 ;D

Also George handled the bass in She Said She Said when Paul stormed off. A very capable bass line, indeed!
