Whilst acknowledging that the cost per unit of vinyl will be more (make no mistake the main reason for record company interest in the medium) exactly how many units of, say, 'With The Beatles' will Apple expect to sell on vinyl?

These releases certainly won't be as visible as their CD equivalents, the chances of Sainsbury's selling vinyl on the shop floor is as likely as England winning the World Cup, and the majority of purchases will be made by existing fans. I can't get excited by that.

The Monkees are till served better in this area in 2014 than The Beatles, and as for the calamity that is The Stones back catalogue.....yikes!

From Analog Planet, this detailed article: The Beatles Get Back To Mono and AAA Vinyl

Unfortunately, these albums will not be exacty the same as the originally-released MONO LPs.  It would be impossible to do that given the age of the master tapes and the newer equipment used produce these pressings...

It’s important to remember that the tapes have aged—some as much as fifty years—and the monitoring, playback and mastering equipment have changed as well, even though the work was done in the very same room in which the originals were mastered. Solid state has replaced tubes in the cutting chain.

The extensive listening and final post production work was accomplished by Abbey Road’s GRAMMY® Award winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY® Award winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz.  Working from the original production notes, they have re-mixed the albums to produce the best-sounding MONO LPs possible.  They will be on the heavy vinyl we remember from the 1960s and packaged similarly too.  But for purists, these will not be recreations of the original LPs but renderings close enough for the majority of us.

They'll be expensive too.  Amazon already has the collection available for pre-order:  The Beatles in Mono Vinyl Box Set (Limited Edition)

Over the years prior to the CD release of The Beatles catalog in 1987, I purchased a few original UK MONO LPs.  Most important, to me, are the Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's MONO LPs.  My first pressing Rubber Soul LP is a -1 matrix "Loud Cut" album.  The backing instrumentals are a bit louder and more aggressive than the later pressings which soon followed.  I think that LP rocks!

But I'm glad I also have a copy of pressing which followed.

And as I've mentioned elsewhere on this board, one of my "prized poseessions" is a mint first UK MONO pressing of Sgt. Pepper's.  It's an experience to listen to!  The MONO CD Remaster comes close.  I hope the new MONO LP will come even closer.

Those two LPs are very expensive today.  So is the original MONO UK The Beatles album.  As the article mentions...

When I interviewed Ken Scott, he told me that Paul wanted the stereo mix of The Beatles to be as different as possible from the mono because that might induce fans to buy both. The mono mix came first. And the two mixes are very different. You could say the stereo mix was more about commerce than art. If you grew up listening to the stereo mix, the mono will be an ear opener.

It's still possible to get original UK MONO LPs in excellent condition for reasonable amounts.  For those who want something very close to the original, this box set is perfect.  It's important to have a quality turntable, stylus and system to fully appreciate these LPs.

Thanks, George.  There's enough there to demonstrate just how nice the MONO vinyl LPs are.  He posted the Rubber Soul "Loud Cut" first pressing too...

And there's the MONO Sgt. Pepper's.  Listening to it, it's quite obvious who sings the ahhhs...

It's a nice appetizer while waiting for the mono release Barry.  I have the mono CD box and love it, but there is something about having these on vinyl.

This is a collection I'll pass on, George.  I have five 1960s UK MONO Beatles LPs including the Rubber Soul first and second pressings and Sgt. Pepper's first pressing.  A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale are the other two.  I'm content with these which supplement my own Capitol LPs I purchased when they were released.

How's your AT-LP120 doing?

I'm getting them because the only Beatles vinyl I have is the 2012 stereo set so these will be a nice addition.

The turntable is great Barry.  The Shure M97xE High-Performance Magnetic Phono Cartridge and theJico SAS Stylus are great additions.

Then it's important that you get this set, George.  I'm sure these technicians did a great job with the original analog tapes and the final product will be very close to the original 1960s pressings.  You also have a fine audio system to play your LPs.

But you're right in delaying your purchase until the reviews come in.

I think it's cool that the sleeves will be in the original "fold over" style.  I expect that The White Album will be a top-loader like the original.

Since I found out it's sourced from the analog masters and will pressed by Optimal in Germany I went ahead and pre-ordered it Barry.   ;)

As I pictured in the Rubber Soul album I posted.  No thin sides to split.  Also, the UK LPs weren't shrink-wrapped as were the Capitol albums.  They had loose plastic wrappers which didn't warp the covers.  The UK covers also have a nice glossy surface.  They were beautifully prepared and had plastic-lined inner sleeves.

I agree, George.  The White Album will be a top-loader like the original.

Hi Fab4Fan and all readers of this forum, I was so excited by the great news about the upcoming vinyl mono re-masters I decided to join this forum to add my comments ! The first vinyl I bought many years ago was The Beatles , Pathe-Marconi pressing, I then added most of the main releases in stereo. I discovered about 23 years ago that the mono versions had variations , so I hunted down the mono releases, all UK pressings. The only release I don't have currently is The Beatles , which of course costs a small fortune, so I am delighted to know I will be able to buy a brand new White album in mono, so roll on September I say!
