What A Bxxxxxd The World Is: The Feminist Politics of Yoko Ono’s Personal Song

When I began listening to Yoko Ono’s music and learned that it wasn’t at all what I’d been led to believe, one of the first songs I was strongly drawn to was a track from the second side of her landmark 1973 double album Approximately Infinite Universe, titled What A Bxxxxxd The World Is. Her later 1973 album Feeling The Space would contain so many songs explicitly dealing with the lives and rights of women — from Woman Power to Men, Men, Men, from Angry Young Woman to Yellow Girl, from She Hits Back to Woman of Salem — that it is regularly referred to as a feminist concept album.

Yoko Ono film opens festival in Spoleto
July 1, 2011
NSA) - Spoleto, July 1 - The Without Borders Film Festival in Umbria kicks off its fourth season on Friday with the world premiere of an animated film written and narrated by Yoko Ono.Hailed as the "only film festival with a soul" by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jerry Levitan, the non-profit event seeks to transcend political, economic, and religious differences by showcasing selections that "embrace our common humanity," according to event founder Fiamma Arditi.Running July 1-3 in the Umbrian city of Spoleto, the theme for this year's festival is "Home," examining "our vital but fragile need" for an idea "as essential to humans as breathing" in 13 films from around the world.
