I had read that those exact lyrics you quoted were a sexual reference.

Yes, Kathy.  There's sexual inuendo in the lyrics too.

I know, Barry. I actually don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out Beatles lyrics (especially John's). I may not be completely sure of what is being actually said in songs like "Happiness is a Warm Gun," "I Am the Walrus,";"Good Morning, Good Morning," et al., but I enjoy them anyway. I try not to overthink the lyrics and simply enjoy the music. I'm likely in the minority.

I think the only direct reference to drugs/heroin is the line with " I need a fix...".

I agree with this post :

"Myself I think it's about his new-found sexual and artistic freedom with Yoko."

Which is not surprising since that's me from eight years ago (eight!).

I’m a bit the same. The overall sound is what grabs me. Then I might delve into the lyrics. I’m still looking at old Beatle lyrics and discovering what they actually said and might mean.

Yes I agree, just like Walrus, it doesnt really mean anything, I agree though much darker than Lucy, but what about the later Across The Universe, didnt things get lighter again ?

Anyway, I have this theory, with The White album I always thought they became a ROCK band, this track along with Prudence, Helter Skelter, While My Guitar, Yer Blues, Why Dont We Do It...etc they wernt just a pop band anymore.

OR were they already a rock band with tracks like Im Down, Slow Down........maybe, I dont know  ???......HELP !!

My take (realising I’m commenting on something from 2013  ;D) is that the White Album was when the Beatles started being an American rock band. Up until MMT they were very English with lots of allusions to Englishness; the whole premise of MMT was as English as could be.  But in the White Album there’s more “rootsy” music and FM friendly rock numbers. Their main market was squarely the US and I think this continued through to Abbey Road, which had a slick produced sound more in keeping with the US then what we expect from English records of the time.

I always took the song's title to be a parodic reference to the Charles Schultz book 'Happiness Is A Warm Puppy' which was a huge seller in the 60s.

what could have been a great song into a moderately good one.

 :)

Paul confirms here where the title comes from @3:30

But Baz
I'm sure John wasn't alive in 2012 sadly.
