Title: Doors: Touch Me
Post by: real01 on July 03, 2007, 08:27:59 PM
Did you have a good life?
The program for this evening isn't new.
You know it through and through.
You've seen birth, life and death.
You might recall all of the rest.
Did you have a good life before you died?
Enough to base a movie on?

Jim Morrison

At the end of the song, Morrison can be heard saying, "Stronger than dirt," which was the slogan of the Ajax household cleaning company, supposedly because the music of "Touch Me" resembled that of an Ajax commercial and as a mocking criticism of Krieger, Densmore, and Manzarek wanting to accept an offer from Buick to use "Light My Fire" in a commercial. The deal was aborted when Morrison opposed.

One of the most famous television appearances of the Doors is of the group performing "Touch Me" on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour along with the single's b-side, Wild Child. During the performance, Robby Krieger can be seen with a black eye - the result of a bar fight the night before.

Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger wrote this as "Hit Me," based on fights he had with his girlfriend. In a rare show of restraint, Jim Morrison insisted on changing it to "Touch Me."

I've read that Morrison didn't like it. Can't remember why cuz I read it a long time ago. I can't believe he's been dead for 36 years. 36 years as of yesterday. I wonder what he'd look like as an old guy.

I can imagine him hating it. To me he even sounds like he doesn't take the song seriously. He sounds like he's trying to imitate how a lounge singer would do it.

I love Touch Me because of the orchestration... It reminds me of the Beatles and their orchestrations. Someone could say that orchestrations are not  suitable for Doors, but I like it...

I love the orchestration. Soft Parade is hands down my favorite Doors album. Hands down. Even though pretty much everyone seems to think it's their weakest album... I've always prefered the Doors' more melodic pop stuff over their blues material and the long solos.

Yeah, I remember you saying:

What do you all think of the Soft Parade album? I read a lot of bad reviews for it, but I think it's a pretty good album.

I really like them, except for the really bluesy songs. I don't like blues.

Any opinions on the Soft Parade album?

It gets reviewed almost everywhere as the weakest Doors album, but it's hands down my favorite.

Well, we agree on that (I like some underated albums y'know) ... not their worst album, not!
Tho my favourite song is When The Music's Over and it's a long theme (11 minutes) but The Soft Parade is a good compilation of music ... I like it!  :)

P.S. Funilly The Soft Parade contains one title: Shaman's Blues  :P

Touch Me is my least favorite Doors song because it's too commercial & too cheesy, Roadhouse Blues is much better than Light My Fire as far as I'm concerned.

It would've been commercial and cheesy if anyone else would've done it. But I believe it's supposed to be a tongue in cheek song. You know that Jim Morrison wasn't the kind of guy who would ever have said something like "I'm gonna love you till the stars fall from the sky" seriously. And to me he sounds as if he's mocking the song as he's singing it, and that combined with the over-the-top arrangement and the really wonderful melodies makes it such a good song.
