Title: DM's Daily Quiz
Post by: Bobber on April 17, 2008, 09:46:08 AM
Try and play DM's own Trivia Quiz every day! Ten questions every day, differing from easy to hard. But besides giving the right answer, there's a clock ticking as well! Whoever gets the most right answers and in the fastest time, wins! You can play every day of the week, but only once a day. There's a weekly competition as well.

Give it a try! You have to subscribe, but it's free. You can find DM's Daily Quiz here: DM'S DAILY QUIZ! (http://my.funtrivia.com/tournament/DMs-Daily-Quiz-82980.html)

Good idea. And now the official DM's quiz, as mine has now been cancelled due to a stunning lack of interest!

i thought we had till sunday to fill in our forms

Technically, you do, but there's really not enough people taking part to warrant putting it together. If by some small miracle 8 or 9 more people send in answers by Sunday, then I'll consider doing another round, but otherwise I'm not very inspired.

It seems that the questions are too difficult for some people. I thought the questions would inspire some of our younger members to do some research, and learn something about The Beatles, but it hasn't worked out that way. And once again, there are many regular members who don't take part in these things. I'll certainly think twice before doing something like that again.

Alright. I'll be sending in some answers before Sunday. They were pretty hard I must admit. The Daily Quiz is an automatic generated quiz which runs by itself...

It's fun, and probably a better idea than mine. My phone rang in the middle of it though!

My brain gets so taxed by everything that by the time I check alls looking good round here...i gotta go again. Will try and make more effort but I have never been good at the regular participation involved and don't like the thought of people being let down or dissappointed. Hence I don't normally participate.

I was trying to click with a bagel stuffed in my face and nearly lost the works answering the "Ob La Di Ob La Da" question. Had no clue about Ed Sullivan, either. But where was The Simpsons question? Are we all getting the same quiz or did I just blow right past it without even noticing?

Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz

We will all get the same questions within a week or so I believe, but there's very small differences (in the order of the questions as well) to prevent cheating! I must say that I don't believe there's cheaters in here, so I will reset things to see that we're getting the same questions every day.

Oh, that's it: I was just wondering why I didn't spot The Simpsons question; but I checked my cache and I didn't get one. I doubt we've got any cheaters here, either.

...but I do know there's a Simpsons question lurking in the database somewhere.(teeth1) Bet it's that barbershop quartet episode (B-Sharps or something? Saw it years ago but don't remember much about it now, of course).

5. "This is an amazing find here, sir. Looks like a book. It's in terribly deteriorated shape, but there are some facts we've managed to gather." What is the one fact that does NOT fit into the Beatle book discovery?

The timing on the quiz site is very dodgy. That 30 seconds I did yesterday is practically impossible if you're going to read the questions, or even skim through them. I've been lucky with a few of my answers too. Crash and burn tomorrow!

Post by: Bobber on June 10, 2008, 09:52:32 AM
Yeah, that was ridiculous! I thought John officially signed the papers somewhere in the mid seventies. I thought '74 (see May Pang's book), but that was not in the list of answers. I subsequently filled in 75, but that was wrong. I knew that!
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz
Post by: BlueMeanie on June 10, 2008, 10:23:49 AM
I thought '74 or '75 was when they were legally 'dissolved'. The alternative would have been 1970, as that's when McCartney released his statement. But that wasn't there!

Digna and PaulieBear, you can have your own competition: see who's best at the end of the month! I was happy to win two days in a row, but I noticed Paul's score for today is 10 in 41 seconds. That's going to be tough to beat.  :-/

They're really easy today. I actually thought I'd done it quicker than 41 seconds!! There's a couple of semi-tough questions that have both come up before.

It's a shame that some of the more knowledgeable people don't play regularly enough. You and I will win this every month because we play every day. There are several others who could do the same and make the competition tighter. I wondered if a few people were not playing so much because it was impossible for them to win? One of the reasons I thought I might stand down.

It's a fun quiz but you have to get into the habit of playing every day, especially as, apparently, some questions come up a second time.

The points system seems complicated and a bit strange. Is it explained on the site somewhere?

I hope the quiz continues through the winter since I imagine that, like me, that's when people are more often on their computer.

Given time Bobber and Blue Meanie may well be challenged in their supremacy!

Lot's of questions have been asked several times, and some have the wrong answer. So you have to remember the wrong answer! The questions about chord progressions kill me every time!

Everybody started with a thousand points. Every wrong answer will cost you a hundred points. Plus every second you use is a point down. So, two wrongs answers and 51 seconds will make 749 points.

I guess you mean this: correct answers - the time you used.

Although I can never reach the top list, I almost play every day. I always see that I really don't know enough about them. I've only had twice 10/10 and never won, but never mind.

OK. That's for the score but I'm more intrigued by the points awarded.
For example at the moment Afox took only 4 seconds more than Bobber to get the ten correct answers and he's 2points down on him. But Sewi who took a massive 92 seconds more than me to get the ten is only one point down on me.

That's the running order. Depending on the number of players, number 1 gets (for instance) 12 points, number 2 10 etcetera.

Here are yesterday's points. How come Afox doesn't get 26 points?
How come the last seven players all get 4 points?
And how come (most important of all!) I get 18 and not 22?

Player     Pts Awarded
1. Bobber      + 27 pts

My theory:
#1 and the runners up get a sort of bonus. From there, points are dropping on a regular base. That's also the reason why you got awarded with 18 points and not 22. The top ten players get the most points. As soon as you dropped to #11, your points are going down dramatically and the same thing happens when you're under #20. It's a complex thing, isn't it?  ;D  Most important thing of all is the fun you should put out of it, a little test for yourself. Don't take it too serious.
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz

In my opinion the more you understand the rules the more interesting a game is.
As you've noticed it's extremely important to be in the top ten.So if you're the last person to play you should look at the scores and work out what tactics to use to get there (speed vs correct answers maybe).
I really feel sorry for Yavanna yesterday who got 5 points at number eleven, just one point more than the player who came last at 27!
What you said about the difference between 20 and 21 is not at all substantiated from yesterday's scores.
As for taking it seriously, I'm reminded of what Sir Alex Ferguson once said about football when asked if it was a matter of life and death. His answer? No, of course not, it's much more serious than that! ;)

But you don't know what questions you're gonna get. Plus if you have the same score as somebody who played earlier, you will be one place lower.

Whoops, I was replying about Shankly.

So, if I understand correctly, it's better not to play too late or you can be automatically demoted.

In my opinion, whoever understands the scoring system completely should be instantly awarded the monthly prize!

Well the question was the one about Eight Days A Week.

The 'right' answer was 'John's chauffeur'...
but in the book Many Years From Now, Paul specifically points out that the title was inspired from a chauffeur he'd never seen before who was driving him out to John's house, so it couldn't possibly have been Alf Bicknell, John's chauffeur, who he knew very well.

Was this the question you were thinking of?

There are only a few wrong answers that I've come across. The problem is usually in the way that the question has been asked. Some of them are extremely misleading. And some are almost impossible to interpret. But the main problem I find is people not making it clear whether they're talking about US or UK releases.

3 nov. but nothing has changes, or was that only for that time nothing worked?

The problem only occured on Monday, when the statistics were reset too late. It hasn't done too much damage to our quiz I think.

10/10          29
7/10                 304
8/10                 287

A little bit suspicious me thinks.

Hey, something weird happened today on my last quiz answer.
I was making sure of my answer when suddenly the screen went straight to the answers page and said my last answer was wrong and explained it by saying [No Answer] !
Is there a new time limit or was it a bug?
It may cost me the third place this month if freakchic plays today.

It may cost me the third place this month if freakchic plays today.

That happened to me several times in the past.It is because of that that I play slower. To somehow check my answers.

About the places:it is a good position for me to be in the top ten because I can not play in the weekends so I usually play 20-21 days per mounth so 260-280 points are fair enough. If I could play everyday things would be much better for me but worse for others players as well, heheheh.

By the way,I have laughed at myself after answering wrongly that question about the bass.

Well I don't play too fast myself so I didn't understand why it suddenly said "no answer".Does it do this when you take too long over a specific question?

Shame you can't play at the weekends. Mind you, it's difficult to find a month where it's possible to play every single day...

Can't you alter it, so only the more difficult questions are added? Try to give yourself a bit more of a challenge? Or, we should set up a trivia thread, having someone personally asking the questions, and whoever gets it right first, gets a point! :P It's just an idea! therefore harder questions could be asked! :D

Yeah, it's getting tough in this quiz!

And if you make one dumb mistake, probably because you're trying to go too fast, you can end up with 9 good answers but way down the list.

But fortunately some days a lot of the participants only get nine...or even less.

With 437 points and 6 wins last month, you know your Beatles Peter.

But I must say the competition has been fierce, I'm in the lead as of this writing over the mighty Bobber by just 2 points...i'm sure the lead will change hands a few times before the end of the month, it makes for an exciting tourney.

I'm just waiting for Bobber to really catch his stride, he hasn't played regularly for awhile and is a little rusty...watch out when he hits it.
Lots of great players though...especially those two snipers, icaramba and stevie.

I really don't know. Problem is I can ban based on IP's, but if someone is playing with a dynamic IP it's pretty hard. In fact is pretty easy to cheat on the quiz, but as you said, it's supposed to be a fun quiz. I can only hope that other players look at it that way as well.
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz
Post by: Bobber on August 04, 2011, 07:53:03 AM
To prevent cheating, I can turn on this option:

Cheat Prevention
It is easy for players to cheat if all players get identical questions each day. They can simply by use multiple accounts or share answers with friends. Our cheat prevention works by giving all players playing in a day slightly differenty questions. Over time, all players will get the same questions, keeping competition fair.

Update: I have switched it on.

I see today’s (7th February) leader has scored 10/10 again in a remarkable 24 seconds, after Beachcomber had played. Funnily enough Beachcomber didn’t play yesterday and neither did Chochin.  This follows a similar pattern on 31st January when Chochin took 21 seconds to get 10/10.

I’ve played this quiz for a while now and it is simply not possible to score 10/10 unless you go straight to the answers without reading the questions.
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz

My second paragraph should have read:

I’ve played this quiz for a while now and it is simply not possible to score 10/10 in 21 - 24 unless you go straight to the answers and therefore already know the questions.

I think there's been a couple of legit players who have managed to get times in the low 20's, so it is possible.
I've never done it personally - I can never scroll down the page that fast - but I think it could be done.
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz
Post by: Bobber on February 08, 2012, 08:56:30 AM
It's a pity if people feel the need to cheat on the quiz. There is nothing to win or lose, it is just for fun purposes. I think I once scored a 23 or 24, so low twenties can be done. I just don't believe one can do it a couple of times in a row.
Title: Re: DM's Daily Quiz

My personal best lowest is 21. If the ten questions are all about songs and nothing else, I find it fairly easy to skim down them.

The last few weeks there have been some toughies! Which explains my sh*t scores...lol!

I know it’s only a fun quiz but I think there is a certain player I have mentioned earlier who generally only seems to play and score a winning 10 on the days Beachcomber also plays (and neither has played at the time of writing today).

(I can answer 10 in 21 seconds but I would be lucky to get two answers correct)!

I think questions tend to be repeated so people who have been playing longer can skim through them more quickly. I wish my reaction time was faster. I feel like there's glue on the bottom of my mouse sometimes. But it's still fun.  :)
