The term boybands doesn't suit them at all but for me they were the most talented musicians in the whole universe !!!

Yes. Heart-throbs suits them much better than boy-band.

Yesterday I was talking to a friend (a huge Bob Dylan fan) about the Beatles.  He said that he had asked his dad about them long ago and his father said to him, "Why would you want to listen to a boy band anyway?"

I was really taken aback by what his dad said because I've never seriously considered the Beatles to be a "boy band," even during their Beatlemania days.  So I said to my friend, "No, no, they're not a boy band" rather defensively because I was thinking of all the sophisticated songs the Beatles had written and how they evolved as musicians.  It just did not seem right to place them at the same level as, say, the Backstreet Boys or whatever.  :(

But my friend brought up the Beatles' heartthrob image from the early Sixties and their teenybopper songs like "I Want to Hold Your Hand"--not to mention all the hysterical young female fans who went nuts over them.  At that point, I stepped back a bit and thought about what he said and grudgingly replied, "Well, okay...so maybe in their early career they were like a boy band."  Even so, I still didn't feel right saying it.  Am I in denial? :-/

What are your opinions?

Bob Dylan said the Beatles were the band that was pointing the direction of music when he first heard them. Roger McGuinn to say: "The words weren't so meaningful but the chord changes really had magic in them" (Muni, Somach & Somach, 1989: 168). Bob Dylan reacted in a similar way, by remarking: "They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid ..."
