Welcome The Rolling Stones?
« on: May 24, 2007, 02:13:19 AM »

Hi Beatles People -

Does anyone know the story, if there is one, behind this?

Lots of stories about other parts of the cover, etc., but I haven't really heard much about this - whose idea, discussions about the choice, etc.

Thanks!

Hi alexis,

Photographer Michael Cooper also did the cover for The Rolling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request."  Hidden in the two bottom corners of the album cover, you can find the faces of all four Beatles.  I think it was just his commentary on these two groups' friendly rivalry.

I'd say without a doubt it is heavily influenced by Pepper. It is a generally accepted as such. Just as "the Rolling Stones" is clearly influenced by With The Beatles, and Aftermath by Rubber Soul. And The Stones album after Satanic Magesties....plain white with just the lettering. And Let It Bleed being a take on Let It Be (same year) has been discussed here before

The Rolling Stones must have been in panic when The Beatles broke up.

Thanks, guys, but my first question was ... why put the Stones on the Sgt. Pepper album cover in the first place?

Ah well, if you guys don't know of a source of info, I'm guessing only Paul, Ringo, George Martin and the artist (Peter Max?) know!

They were mates. In the early days The Beatles used to go to see them play. Paul and John wrote I Wanna Be Your Man for them.

They also used to get together and make sure their album release dates didn't clash so they wouldn't effect each other sales. The Stones weren't the bad guys the hype would have you believe.

Mick. So pretty. Almost as pretty as Paul. I wish there was footage of them in the studio together. Is there? Have I just missed it all these years?

The pictures of the Beatles on the cover of Their Satanic Majesties Request were difficult to see, PaulieBear.  You would have to find an original 1967 vintage vinyl LP with the 3-D lenticular cover and hold it just the right way to catch a glimpse of their faces.  I don't think it would be possible to take a picture of the LP cover and see the Beatles' faces on the print.  But they are indeed there among the flowers.
