Sour Milk Sea
« on: August 07, 2014, 08:59:11 AM »

I was listening to one of those iTunes Radio stations this evening and Jackie Lomax came on doing Sour Milk Sea.

Jackie sang like he was in the middle of swallowing a cherry tomato whole. Am I the only one who wishes the Beatles had done this song? I'm not saying it was a hit single but it's a really good upbeat tune. Would have worked well on White Album or Let it Be.

A lot of 'ifs' here.....
.....but if The Beatles had split after Brian's death, and if George had cobbled together 12 songs from 'Blue Jay Way', 'The Inner Light', 'All Things Must Pass', 'Old Brown Shoe', 'Badge', 'Sour Milk Sea', 'Not Guilty', the 4 on the White Album, the 2 on 'Yellow Submarine' and the 2 on 'Abbey Road' for a solo LP, and if it had been produced by anyone EXCEPT Phil Spector for a September 1969 release, and if he'd gone acoustic on them rather than heavy, it would probably be voted above 'Astral Weeks', 'Sgt. Pepper's' and 'VU & Nico' on all those Top 500 lists.

There's certainly some good songs on that virtual album, but some very weak ones as well. I don't rate Blue Jay Way, Badge, Not Guilty, Only A Northern Song, Long Long Long, Piggies and (but that's strictly personal) Guitar Weeps along his best work. To rate this album higher than for instance Sgt Pepper is a firm statement.

'Very weak'. Really?
What rates as better than 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' after his stint with The Beatles? The gross over-production of 'All Things Must Pass'? Anything after that?

OK, look at it another way then.
10 tracks (Nick Drake's '69 LP had 10 tracks).

1. Here Comes The Sun
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
3. Something
4. All Things Must Pass
5. For You Blue

There's your side one!

For You Blue wasn't mentioned in your previous possibilities. Doesn't matter, cause it's a pretty forgettable thing anyway imho. I'm curious about your side 2 tho. I think you've already run out of George's best songs from that period.

George Harrison had a better period than when he wrote 'Something' and 'Here Comes The Sun' - i.e. the late 60s?
Erm.....when?

For You Blue was done in early '69 so that would qualify but, then, you don't like that either!
I find it a bit bizarre that you dislike 'so many' Beatles songs.

As for side two, I adore The Inner Light (especially), Long Long Long, Savoy Truffle, Old Brown Shoe, Only A Northern Song etc. but, again, it's a bit academic as you obviously hate them all!

Maybe the world should only listen to '1'.

I never used the word 'hate'. I just don't think that a virtual album with Only A Northern Song, Blue Jay Way, Not Guilty, Sour Milk Sea, For You Blue and Long Long Long would make a better album than for instance Sgt Pepper.

Well I don't think it threatens Something, Here Comes the Sun or Taxman in my George spectrum. But it'd probably rate somewhere around Savoy Truffle and I Me Mine. An upper middle George song. Like Think for Yourself  ;)

And way above Blue Jay Way.  ;D

I quite like Savoy and I Me Mine. So I'd rate them higher. I'd throw in You Like Me too Much in his lower quality tunes.

His Indian songs I find too hard to judge. I don't like them much so they belong in the lower regions but they're too different to evaluate against normal Beatle pop rock songs.

Actually yeah I forgot about You Like Me Too Much, terrible song imo,  Im surprised they allowed it on the album, maybe theyd used up all the L & M ones, Not Guilty goes in my lousy section too.

Catchy tune, that.  I can't seem to get it out of my head!   ;)

But it was a good song to use for the ending of the animation portion of Yellow Submarine.  Very visual on the big screen and the stereo enhanced the effect...

And then it faded to this...

The Beatles - All Together Now (1968)

...and we did go out singing!  I love that movie!

Yellow Submarine is a great film. Watched it a lot when my kids were younger. Might have to give it another spin soon

They're you go. They should have done Sour Milk Sea for yellow submarine. They could have gone through it just after the Sea of Holes, just before the sea of green
