George's Brainwashed album
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:30:56 AM »

what's everybody think of Brainwashed? Personally I think it's his best!  :) My favorites are "Any Road" "Looking for My Life" "Stuck Inside a Cloud" "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "Brainwashed"

This may supplant 'ATMP' as my fave. Brilliant, poignant, and yet to be fully appreciated, IMO.

Yay! Let's hear it for the Brainwashed love!

I hear you, Klang, but I don't think BW will knock out ATMP for me; I think they are even more awesome when played against each other. In the one, you have the young, fired-up guy in the middle of his Beatles divorce trying to find his artistic and spiritual footing. In the other, you have the guy who's put it all together, calm, content, sure of who he is and his place in the universe. His songs are masterfully constructed and yet so raw; I feel the emotional edge.

Personal faves are "Pisces Fish" (he wrote that for me, you know; I am a Pisces and I also ride a bike, so there!), "Looking for My Life", "Rising Sun", "Marwa Blues", "Stuck Inside a Cloud", "Run So Far" (so poignant!) and "Brainwashed", particularly with the harmonium and chant at the end. What a perfect sense of closure for George's life and career! I love the humor of "P2 Vatican Blues" -- sort of reminds me of when Tom Lehrer skewered the Catholic church in his hilarious "Vatican Rag". And "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "Rocking Chair in Hawaii" just ooze atmosphere. There's a lot to love about this album... so I do!

Thanks for asking, JimmyMcCullochFan! :)

Brainwashed is a very special album to me as it helped me
out of a very dark period in my life, which of course was five
years ago. I agree it was a return to his best work in
a long time. Rising Sun & Pieces Fish are incredible pieces
of music! Any Road has been a wonderful message i've
took on in my life as well! the production that jeff lynne
& Dhani fished on it is terrific as well! this album is
a tresure in my collection! :D :)

agreed - as well as Between the Devil and the Blue sea.

Some great guitar (as always) with the instrumental piece. And the chanting at the end of Brainwashed is incredible. Sounds like Maori I must say. When I first heard Brainwashed (the song) I found it hard to believe it was George, I mean it the way he says the word doesnt sound like him...  :-/

Can anyone tell me why does the Buddah (in the inside of the cd) has a half moon on his head?  :-/

Ah, thank you kitie!  The reason why it sort of confuzed me is because I thought it to be like the Muslim half moon (with no star) and so that wouldnt make much sense...

Wonderful collection of songs. A fantastic testify of George's late career. A shame that we only knew 12 songs from his latest decade of musical work. Anyway, I really believe this album deserved to be a #1 hit. Maybe it's not a masterpiece, but is a consistent effort by this great guitar player.
Oh! By the way, Stuck Inside a Cloud is my favourite George song ever...  :)

It's a nice album. Nothing special, but nice. A good ending.

I love Marwa Blues i really think it's George's most majestic song by far. Stuck inside a Cloud had me in tears when i first heard it and Devil and the Deep Blue Sea although some say is out of place i feel shows a side of George we fans know and appreciate. GREAT album and one of his best for sure

I love that quote from Dhani about "Brainwashed"

I really love brainwashed, it's concept isn't negative, it's very revealing.
George was noticing the changes in technology and how they are not as great as we make them out to be.
When he mentions computers, it's so unbeleivable at all the filth on the net, that's why it's called the net.
And he mentions mobile phones, how many wrecks have been cause because of cell phones, a lot more than alcohol.
His comments about organized religion is very true, you can praise without having to be labeled, by the media as catholic, baptist, non denominational ( pentecostal in shroud),etc.. too many people hide behind religion to gain wealth, power, and the sins of the flesh ( fornication).
Just like john said back in 1966, about the beatles being more popular than jesus, it's more true today, but substitute the internet for beatles.
I do hope in the future that the song george gave to jools holland "horse to the water", will be added to brainwashed, it fits so well with the album, and it's one of my personal favorites.
my favorites from brainwashed are, any road, stuck inside a cloud, marwa blues, brainwashed, in fact the whole cd....
technology is like a gun, it only does good in the right hands....... :)

Got my copy of Brainwashed yesterday and i like it a lot .
I'm really impressed with the title track one of George's great songs , the lyric is very pertinet what with the credit crunch and those wankerbanker's .
And i love how the song moves into that Indian phase towards the end .
Other tracks i like are Any Road, Pisecs Fish ,Marwa Blues and Stuck Inside A Cloud .
There is definitely a change in George's voice from Cloud Nine to Brainwashed age and illness i suppose , sounds a bit like Dylan on occasion ?
Will have to listen to it a few more times to get the full flavour of it , just waiting for my George Harrison CD to arrive now , i'm looking forward to hearing that one too .
(thumbsup)

I love the songs on Brainwashed, but it is heartbreaking (for me) to hear him struggling with breath and volume. Yes he does have dylanesque phrasing on some. His fantastic guitar playing is a soaring tribute to his music. Dana ; )
