Anyone know about the MORGUE? A club the Fab...
« on: November 07, 2004, 02:50:32 AM »

Does anyone know about a club called the MORGUE in Liverpool?
I THINK the Quarry Men played there right before or right after George joined.

ANY information, very much appreciated!

got this from here
Colin mentioned that since positive documentation of the actual additional dates wasn't available, only the two confirmed dates were included in the book. Since Colin himself couldn't recall the actual dates, this area is now ripe for Beatles scholars to investigate. Colin also said he recalls only one gig at the Morgue Skiffle Cellar (which would have been March 13, 1958, at 7.30 pm by the way), but Lewisohn states they performed there at least five times, which Colin doesn't seem to remember. Further research on this might be indicated as well.

Thursday 13 March saw the opening of the Morgue, a tiny cellar club in Broadgreen, run by Alan Caldwell, later to become the legendary Rory Storm. This was the night it was said that George played 'Raunchy' for them, a brief audition which resulted in his joining the band. They were to make a couple of appearances at the venue. Their final date of the year came through George as they were booked to appear at the wedding reception for George's brother Harry and his bride Irene McCann and performed at the Harrison household at 25 Upton Green, Speke, on Saturday 20 December

Thursday, March 13, 1958: The Quarry Men perform at The Morgue Skiffle Center, Oakhill Park, Broadgreen, Liverpool. This is the opening night of a club run by 18-year-old Alan Caldwell, whose group Alan Caldwell's Texans also performs. Caldwell later adopts the stage name 'Rory Storm', and his group becomes known as 'The Hurricanes'. The club is located in the cellar of a huge old Victorian house that had previously been a home for retired nurses. It held 100 people, and it was lit by a single, blue bulb and a fluorescent strip light. An electric fan provided the club's 'ventilation'. The club is closed by police a month later, but it is likely that the Quarry Men played there on more than one occasion.
