Title: Ringo's replacement fears
Post by: harihead on January 14, 2008, 07:20:10 PM
STARR FEARED McCARTNEY WOULD REPLACE HIM

BEATLES drummer RINGO STARR worried SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY would replace him in the legendary band - because he kept borrowing his drumkit. Starr feared his bandmate was angling to take his position after realising he was secretly playing his drums. But after hearing MCCartney's attempts on the instrument, the 67-year-old was convinced his place as drummer was safe. He says, "Every time I went for a cup of tea, he was on the drums. You couldn't get the bugger off. "I wasn't there for those songs. It wasn't like I was in the room and he did it. I'd left or something had happened, and so he would play. "But he's not half as good as me. He's an incredible bass player, but he's not a great drummer." Starr went on to insist none of the other Beatles could have done his job either. He adds, "George Harrison had his own way of playing the drums, John Lennon had his own way of playing them, too. "They'd hit them about a bit but they couldn't really play."
MCCartney played drums on Beatles tracks Back In The USSR, Dear Prudence and The Ballard Of John And Yoko. He has also taken control of the sticks himself on his more recent solo recordings.

This is hilarious. I mean now, in retrospect. At the time, Ringo had cause to worry. They'd ditched Pete; he could be next! I especially enjoy that Paul was being sneaky about it. "No one on the drums, no, not me!" *whistles*

I can just see poor Ringo, coming back from the loo, finding the kit switched around, and wondering if elves had done it... *pets him*

I wonder what years he harbored those fears *.

If early on, reasonable enough.

If later than that ... shame on Paul for making him feel this way!

* Note to self - rhymes, potential lyric. Through the years, and tears and jeers, and beers. 2nd note to self - stick with day job. Cleaning the loo will do. Hey, another rhyme! Note to self.... oh, never mind.

I do think Paul is pretty good at drumming, I thought Back In the USSR had great drumming before I knew Paul was involved.

Hey harihead, do you know where I can find that full interview?

Sorry, Beatles, I don't. It just came across as a message in an group email, and whoever forwarded it didn't include the source.

I can totally see that in the early years.  After what happened to Pete.  Thank goodness it never happened.
