Favorite Background Vocals
« on: January 22, 2006, 10:38:24 PM »

I guess when you've listened to the Beatles for a 100 years you start noticing stuff like this. Anyway, I've been noticing that there are some background vocals/harmonies in songs that I really think are cool. Anyone else notice things like this and have a favorite or two? Here's some I like:

You Won't See Me-the ooh, la la la's
Nowhere Man-Similiar background vocals to You Won't See Me-Ohh, la la's
The Ballad of John and Yoko-Paul's vocals at the ending. So cool.
Happiness is a Warm Gun-Happiness...bang bang shoot shoot...ooooo ohhh yeah.
We Can Work it Out-John's background vocals
Hello Goodbye-the Hello Goodbye Hello Goodbyes and but I may mean no etc.
Your Mother Should Know-I love the harmonies.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps-Paul's backing and his oooo ooo at the end. It complements George's ohh ohh's so well.
Don't Let Me Down-Paul's bacground vocals
Dig a Pony-Paul again. His voice just sound so cool.
I'm Only Sleeping-Paul's high parts basically

I didn't mean to pick a lot of Paul, but that's just what strikes me for some reason. I have more but can't think of them right now.

They have got such a great stuff (more than 200 songs, y'know!) ... and they loved harmonies (girls groups from early 60s and Motown, of course) ... so they learned first and became masters later ...

Their hidden treasure, for those of us who have listened to their songs so many times, (at least it is so in my case) is backing vocals and harmonies: masters.  8)

There are tons of examples (too many for me to collect them here right now, but the ones you've posted are some of the best ones) ... specially from late 1963 till 1966 (Guymania) more or less. There are some songs with great moments in 1967 and 1968 but the less.

^OMG! How could I have forgotten that one. I particularly like the Shea Stadium version. Which is why I must have rewound it a million times just to hear Paul do the OH HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE!!! part. Awesome.

How about the "yeah, yeah boys..." from Boys? Great harmonies there!! :)

Love that track, even though the tempo is a little off - it gets slower and slower!
