One special compilation for one special girl
« on: November 04, 2015, 02:04:05 PM »

So, I was talking to this very nice girl (about music, among other things) and she mentioned how she likes Paul's Hey Jude.

OK, she's taken - but I thought to myself - why not make a compilation for her to listen?

So, I've decided to pick Paul's non-love songs from Beatles era and put it on one CD.

I've skipped almost all love song (there isn't a point making a 'love-songs only compilation' for a girl that you like while she has somebody else.)
Rather, I decided to introduce her to all those nice piece of music & lyrics made by Paul by skipping all 'love', 'me', 'you', 'holding hands' things.
She probably heard some of his songs on the radio, but I also hope there'll be a lot surprises for her on the disc. icon_cool
The songs are not listed chronologically - but I've more or less grouped them by album.

It starts with her favourite (so she doesn't have to search it thru the disc). I've included Let It Be & Two of Us from the 'Let It Be... Naked' album.
I couldn't resist 'Two of Us' because it is such a charming tune! Plus, I like this Paul's duet with John.
Eleanor Rigby is put between We Can Work It Out and Paperback Writer.
'Eleanor' is the saddest song here (We Can Work It Out also sound sad), but all three have very fast rhythm - and Paperback Writer is optimistic. So, it shows Paul's versatility in songwriting.  glassesslip
Also, Golden Slumbers is included (it's love song), together with Carry That Weight and The End.
The End, again, is a beautiful song about love  (that is, how love should be) - it just had to be included. Luckily for this occasion, it doesn't have 'love' in the title.  icon_cool
The compilation doesn't end with this number. Instrumental 'Flying' follows (it is credited to all the four band members) - but, as Paul said, he came up with the tune (which I like a lot).
Also, instrumental pieces are rare these days - so I've added it to the compilation as a little surprise - when she listens to it, she'll wait for the vocals...  8)
From 'Love' I've selected Blackbird / Yesterday - again, a song about lost love - which just had to be included (although everyone has heard the song).
For effect, the disc ends with Maggie Mae (it is a traditional song, but all four band members are credited on LiB version), running just 0:40. (It could be a good starter, too.  glassesslip)
The collaborations between John & Paul written for Ringo are also here (With A Little Help From My Friends) but 'A Day In The Life' is omitted (it is mostly written by John).
Also, it has some good rockers like 'Birthday' & 'Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da.'

A lot of good songs were not included (like Good Day Sunshine, Maxwell Silver Hammer, full version of Blackbird - and of course, 'love' material from early days like 'All My Loving'...)

I was in temptation to put Hey Jude as a last track (shorter version from 'Love' album) on the disc while keeping the original one as the first track (something like Sgt. Pepper) - but I decided not to make an
'concept' album.

It runs little over 67 minutes with 24 songs.

Anyway... Here's the track list:

1. Hey Jude
2. Lady Madonna
3. Let It Be
4. Two Of Us
5. Your Mother Should Know
6. The Fool On The Hill
7. Hello, Goodbye
8. Penny Lane
9. With A Little Help From My Friends
10. She's Leaving Home
11. Rocky Raccoon
12. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da
13. Honey Pie
14. Birthday
15. We Can Work It Out
16. Eleanor Rigby
17. Paperback Writer
18. Golden Slumbers
19. Carry That Weight
20. The End
21. Flying
22. Yellow Submarine
23. Blackbird / Yesterday
24. Maggie Mae

Or Why Don't We Do it In The Road?

Okay, maybe that one would be a little too obvious, eh?

It took me a full minute to figure out what song you were talking about. I am so bad with acronyms. LOL

No Martha ?

:)

Although it is a nice piece of music and it is dedicated to Paul's dog - it has lines like 'Martha my dear... my love...' etc.

or BITUSSR

I've put 'Birthday' which is a good, fast rock number.

Or YNGMYM?

Well, part of that song is included in 'Carry That Weight':
Quote
I never give you my pillow
I only send you my invitations
And in the middle of the celebrations
I break down

It is a nice song - but, it would be kind of repeating if I had included it.

Or Why Don't We Do it In The Road?

Okay, maybe that one would be a little too obvious, eh?

Yes.

Plus, I like songs which have more lyrics than just two verses repeating.

Also, this...:

Quote
McCartney wrote the song after seeing two monkeys copulating in the street while on retreat in Rishikesh, India, with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He marvelled in the simplicity of this natural scenario when compared to the emotional turmoil of human relationships. He later said:

A male [monkey] just hopped on the back of this female and gave her one, as they say in the vernacular. Within two or three seconds he hopped off again and looked around as if to say It wasn't me, and she looked around as if there'd been some mild disturbance ... And I thought ... that's how simple the act of procreation is ... We have horrendous problems with it, and yet animals don't.

Oh, finally I've finished the work! I wanted to put 'Got To Get To Into My Life' - but, as I said, I tried to avoid 'love' themes.
This one is about pot, as Paul said:
Quote
This song is about marijuana. Paul McCartney cleared this up in his 1998 book Many Years From Now when he explained that it was not about a particular person, but his desire to smoke pot.

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=113

...but the title & lyrics could be interpreted otherwise (into my life... i need your love etc.)

So, I decided to end it with lesser known 'All Together Now'  - since I've also put 'Yellow Submarine' on the compilation.
Anyway, if I was to make a love compilation, then I'd had to start with 'Got To Get You Into My Life' (Anthology version) and end with 'Two of Us').

Also, I did some artwork - OK, not my own work, both pictures are taken from the net and printed on my b&w printer. (The red colour is from the flash.)
(I say this before I get commission for more of 'my artwork').

Here's the cover with track list:

Now, just the final thing - the presentation: - OK, here are Paul's songs, some of them better known, some of them less, but nice in their diversity, melodic & beautiful, for you to enjoy...

Another kind of compilation could be made consisting of songs written by all of the guys. Again, without (or mostly without) love-themed tracks.
The first one is a cover (Mr. Postman) with John singing the lead - OK, it is a bout a boy waiting for a letter from her girl. Luckily, it has 'Postman' in the title.
There are also versions of this song where girl sings about waiting a letter from her boy (The Marvelettes). Anyway, j'adore this zonggggg!  icon_cool
Beautiful Something just had to be included, as well as Yesterday and some others.
Of course, some songs are repeated from the first compilation - so I had to choose - go with the first choice or make a new CD with this tracklist.
I'm not sure if all will fit in one CD - but what songs to exclude from the list?

1. Mr. Postman
2. Paperback Writer
3. In My Life
4. Blackbird / Yesterday (Love album)
5. Norwegian Wood
6. We Can Work It Out
7. Nowhere Man
8. Eleanor Rigby
9. Yellow Submarine
10. WALHFMF (Rigno on vocals. Interesting, he also plays the drums here!)
11. Strawberry Fields
12. Penny Lane
13. WMGGW (George)
14. Don't Pass Me By
15. Hello, Goodbye
16. Piggies
17. Julia
18. Rocky Raccoon
19. The Ballad of J & Y (This one was recorded by the duo Lennon-McCartney.)
20. Something
21. Don't Let Me Down
22. She's Leaving Home
24. Across The Universe
25. Hey Jude
26. Only A Northern Song
27. Two of Us
28. Long, Long, Long
29. Let It Be
