Yeah Allof The Day or whatever its called. (but check out that guitar solo-sloppy or what). and waterloo sunset always makes me a bit misty eyed, specially the backing vocals.
Thinking of dedicated Follower of fasion-who started that Twenties sound thing-him or Paul ? (ie When I'm 64, Your Mother Should Know..)

The Kinks are one of the greatest rock bands of all time with few equals & one of the pioneers in the British Invasion of the early 60's with the Beatles, the Stones & the Who.  Ray Davies is one of the greatest songwriters of all time with few equals but it's too bad he never collaborated with John on any song during the 60's which would have been amazing.

Ray Davies indeed is an amazing writer. Totally agee again Wayne. ;)
If it was'nt for The Beatles they would have conquered I reckon. But maybe if it was'nt for The Beatles they would have not the yardstick to write such great tunes.
Big Up The KINKS!!!

i also think the problem with the kinks was that their production was pretty bad.

if they had a production company  like the beatles, i'm pretty sure they would have made more hits.
Title: Re: THE KINKS!
Post by: An Apple Beatle on February 05, 2005, 01:23:52 PM
Well they never had The mighty GOD George MArtin as producer but I would'nt say their production was bad. Very organic maybe surely not 'pretty bad'...?....:)

I've always thought a alrge slice of Beatlemania in America was more than just their music. Don't know if the Kinks would have the personality to create the stir The Beatles did. Other than Ray they're a quite a faceless band

Pretty good point there Kevin.... I was'nt thinking about personalities when I wrote that...Purely songs...It's just there was a thread or question not long ago about what would have happened if there was no Beatles. To me, they would have been the obvious contenders from British Pop around that time had there been no Beatles.Other than RAy though, your completely right.
I do love their style though. ;)

I love the Kinks, but I have to admit that their 60s production sound is pretty horrible compared to the crispness and clearness of the Beatles and George Martin and EMI and Geoff Emerick.  I think Shel Talmy was their producer for the stuff on Pye.  I guess they didn't have the production team EMI had.  It's a shame that stuff can't be remastered.

So.... why were they really band from America by the musician's union between 1965 and 1969? The real reasons have never been disclosed! Was it due to an alleged fight with a union member while recording a US TV show - or was it because the union felt that British bands were taking over the US music scene and randomly chose to ban the Kinks?

For whatever the reason they were banned from touring the US, it seems that this was probably why Ray Davis' wrote songs that were so uniquely English at that time - name-checking the it-places of swinging London and writing of life in a quaint English village.

It's always struck me as strange that they are considered a singles band though - buy The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society CD and you will be blown away!!!

when i was younger i was told/heard that one of the reasons they never broke america was due to the fact they wouldnt pay protection money to mafia families and that all the other uk bands had, and it resulted in them not being able to return again ?

The Kinks were a brilliant band, so many classic songs! :)
i have all their 60's albums & most of the 70's albums!
Ray Davis is totally up their with Lennon & McCartney. :)

been into the Kinks since the mid-60's (but seriously started buying their albums in the 70's because The Fab, Stones & Pink Floyd always took precedence over almost all other bands for me)-- but once I really got into Ray's stuff I was hooked. Kronikles, Arthur, Village Green Preservation Society, Muswell Hillbillies (what a GREAT ALBUM !! ESPECIALLY "20th Century Man" !!),Preservation (act 1 & 2), Everybody's in Show Biz, Soap Opera, Schoolboys In Disgrace, Lola vs. the Powerman, u name it, I got it...

(plus you gotta read Dave Davies book, "Kink")

ps : Mr. Kite, I see you're a RUSH fan as well---Geddy Lee is WITHOUT QUESTION the best bassist next to McCartney (and Chris Squire of Yes )as far as I'm concerned. Being a Yank living near the Canadian border, I've gotten to see Geddy & Co. many times on their home turf in Toronto. This trio is incredible--always has been (The only other canadian band I love more is The Guess Who--who I also grew up with. Burton Cummings is a genuis)

Okay, to the person who said Ray Davies is up there with Lennon/McCartney. I wouldn't quite go that far. I mean, the Kinks have many amazing songs, but I don't think their catalogue compares with the Beatles in quality, quanitity or innovation. The only equal really is probably Bob Dylan. I'd put Davies in the same league as someone like Pete Townshend or even Paul Simon. Maybe even Mick and Keith. Except they're not underrated like Townshend or Simon are. But that's just my opinion and I'm no music expert or anything.

I'd put Lennon/McCartney out on their own. In joint second place: Ray Davies, Pete Townsend, Paul Weller.

I think the Beatles wrote more univerally. Their writing isn't as exclusive as Ray Davies is or early Pink Floyd and some Who.  That's REAL English stuff. I think Bob Dylan is a universal writer too which is why he and the Beatles stand out. I mean among about a million other reasons.

BTW, Daveram. I LOVE that pic of Paul in your sig. He's the only reason I watch that video. Who the hell said he looks ugly with a beard????? I mean, that's ugly??

:) yes i thin ksome itmes he is overlooked because of the whole britpop nonsense as it is uncool nowadays to have liked it.

he can also turn his hand to any style (gorillaz) and laos Graham Coxon who played a very improtant part of turning Albarns songs nto the classics they are today

id throw in Morrisey/Marr, Robert Smith, Andy Partridge, Robert Fripp, Anderson and Howe

The Greatest strength of Ray Davies is his "Observation and Comment" style of songwriting....

It was said of Hollywood Legend - a "Celluloid Hero" indeed - Actor  Cary Grant that he could both PLAY a character...and at the same time "Comment" on him...! just watch "Arsenic & Old Lace" etc...

A Rare ability.....Ray Davies as a songwriter shares that rare ability....

Look at "A Well Respected Man"....about town, doing the best things so conservatively....!

who could get a line like that into a song back in 1965...?

going on about "While Discussing Foreign trade /...The Father pulls the Maid...who passes looks as well as milk...!!

it's all superbly put together with biting satire & wit...

Ray made a deliberate decision NOT to "Be Like everybody Else" circa 1966....as everyone went into Psychedelia...Ray chose to question the whole giddy sixties scene in "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"

- "Everywhere the Carnabetian Army marches on....Each one a ..." !

The Kinks - a Classic Band of course - could NOT actually play that much to start with....hence all the early songs are kept SIMPLE...tho' Ray turns the band's musical limitations to their advantage with astounding perception...

listen to one of their RARE covers...."Dancing in The Street" - where half way through they TOTALLY LOSE the Melody...!

Ray thus always kept the song technically straightforward....Dave WAS a stunning Rock guitarist ("Milk Cow Blues" worked FAR better !) ...but the band were happiest with a standard beat...embellished by  a bit of classy Nicky Hopkins piano & harpsichord ("He's a "Session Man"...."He's Not paid to THINK...just Play" !)

Ray thus keeps it basic...yet the STRENGTH lies in the Riffs...the wistful Ray & Dave Harmonies (credit MUCH to Dave with the STRONGER harmony voice !)...and the SUPERB Lyrics...

Ray looks at the sixties world around him...of Followers of fashion...profumo scandals....Tax dodgers...Class divides...etc

After the Mini opera of the "Love affair" of the first few singles "which then turns sour" - going from "You Really Got Me" "All Day & All of The Night"....then "Tired of Waiting For You"...through "Set Me Free" to  "See My Friends"  - inter-cut only by the Soul homage often overlooked "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" - which featured magnificent Drumming by Mick Avory.

Ray then concluded the Kinks first "hit singles" phase with  "Till The End of The Day" - a curtain call number....then turned his attention properly to Albums....tho' the 'b' side (worthy of a "Double A" in fact) hinted at Ray even in 1965...as earlier with "Tired of Waiting For You"... feeling a sense of a deeper  "Wistful Loss"....not just of a Girlfiernd this time...but a way of life ...."Won't you tell me...Where have All The Good Times Gone...?"

After looking at Trendy chappies "pulling their frilly nylon panties right up tight..." Ray turned his view to the sad plight of the world around him...the Sixties working class fodder...folk who Often voted Conservative too !

"There's A Crack up in the Ceiling...and the kitchen sink is Leaking..."

"Dead End Street" was a song your Nan & Grandad could identify with...."We are strictly second class...."

the song was TOTALLY at odds with the more famous  trendy "Swinging Sixties" image of nearly every other band of the day.......but then Ray was "Not Like Everybody Else" was he...?

"Dead End Street" was sheer BITING Social comment the like of Bob Dylan could appreciate...!

"Face To Face" in 1966 was Ray's first "Real" themed Album....with digs in various directions....how working class folk are conned ("Holiday in Wakkiki")....the Upper Classes..."Most Exclusive Residence for Sale"... at, possibly inspired by the then current Michael Caine film: "Alfie" gigolos in "Dandy" (a  welcome USA hit for Ray when covered  by Herman's Hermits)....and  even a nod to hard times a comin' - pre-dating john Fogerty's later Creedence warnings...."Rainy Day in June".... while still looking at his own relationships - "I'll Remember" etc....

Ray produced a timeless classic in "Sunny Afternoon" - his wistful reflective song styling never more honed to perfection....even a (then...and now) controversial admission of: "Telling tales of Drunkenness and cruelty" (Missed by the very stuffy sixties censors !) - plus as Frank Smyth so memorably put it in the Linear notes:

Fate Flings it's last custard pie....The Taxman cometh...!

"Something Else By The Kinks" (1967) takes Ray's sixties writing even further into "Daviesland"....Social comment re the PERILS of smoking...."Harry Rag" is put to a jaunty almost Irish jig style...yet note the underlying sense of despair re the TOTAL Addiction..."I Curse myself for the Life I've Led....and Roll myself a Harry Rag & put myself to bed..." !

For USA fans: "Harry Rag" - Cockney rhyming slang: Harry Rag....f**...British slang for a Cigarette  (presumably nothing else) !

The song is about hopeless addiction to smoking...and addiction in general.

"David Watts" - remember what I said re Cary Grant's "Commenting" ? - Here Ray appears to be cutting that Intolerable School "Golden Boy" down to size....! - or is he ?

Much as we are persuaded to DETEST this "Wonder Boy" Master watts...the refrain is "I WISH I COULD BE LIKE DAVID WATTS...." -Ray is both dismissing Watts...an intolerably "Perfect" schooldays figure : Head boy...captain of the team (spit !) ...yet is also totally ENVIOUS ....Watts only brings Ray's (ours too ?) OWN inner  feelings of inadequacy to the fore...in an open admission of envy & begrudged Admiration:

"And all the Girls in the Neighbourhood Try to go out with David Watts..."

note Dave & Pete frantically  echo: "wish I wish I wish..." in the background  - as Ray always finds time to inject a sense of flippant humour into his songs....!

The key thing here being that we learn MORE about the writer/singer (Ray...or you..or me etc) than the SUBJECT...."David Watts" as the song really reflects more the attitudes, desires & frustrations etc,  of whoever sings it...than anything about the "Perfect figure" that supposedly is Watts...himself !

This is what I meant about how Ray...like Cary Grant...can "Comment" on something in a song...while appearing to just observe and/or dissect a subject matter....many Ray Davies songs take this subtle & deeper  approach

Ray gets cited now as "Godfather of punk"....but there was in fact a TIMELESSNESS about Ray...he's NOT just "Youth"....he covers all ages plights..."Situations Vacant" reflects the married couples situation....while  "Autumn Almanac" ,"Afternoon Tea", "Tin Soldier Man" etc....are songs a much older person might well identify with....

"This is MY street and I'm Never gonna leave it...and I'm always gonna stay here ..if I live to be Ninety-Nine..."

Considering he was in his twenties back then Ray Davies had a remarkably Mature view of Life & the world....he often spoke like an ELDERLY man disdainfully reflecting on what he DIDN'T like....and wistfully longing for a bygone era he did...or thought he did !

"Waterloo Sunset" - again technically very simple - was a Glorious reflection on British lifestyle and attitude...

"Millions of people swarming like flies round Waterloo Underground...."

plus a nod to the sixties: "But Terry (Terence Stamp ?) and Julie (Julie Christie ?  then stars of "Far From The Madding Crowd") -...cross over the river (Thames) where they feel safe and sound...."

..or is Ray just playing with us here....? - decide for yourself (Ray HAD just been to see that film he later admitted)

...Ray also again detaches himself from the masses (forever the "Introvert Extrovert") ;

"But I Don't...need no friends...as long as I Gaze on Waterloo Sunset...I am in Paradise..."

...and credit Dave too...his superbly distinctive backing harmonies : "La La La..." make it work so superbly...

Hope these Observations of Raymond Douglas Davies songwriting make some kind of sense....let  me know !

Enough waffle for now....!!

I practically didn`t know the band, except You Really Got Me. Now I`ve listened to it more closely, and recognized Sunny Afternoon and Apeman.
I must confess that I have fallen in love with them. Their style really gets you, gets a hold on you, if I can say so. It is so cute! Now I even think that they are more British than The Beatles. Can it be so?
I also love Lola, Waterloo Sunset, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, and I especially love Set Me Free.

My favourites are kind of similar to yours, Jane :)
I really like Autumn Almanac, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Waterloo Sunset, Sunny Afternoon, Lola, and A Well Respected Man. Oh yeah, and You Really Got Me, and that song about the Supersonic Rocket Ship.

I got to know about the Kinks from Mum - one day she remembered a song called Sunny Afternoon and really wanted to listen to it, but couldn't remember who sang it. So I searched youtube and we listened together, and I really liked what I heard :)

yeah, I'm really just starting to get into them though. I think they are fascinating too, such great a sound!
I was going around my house randomly singing "Looola lala la la Looola" all day and annoying my mom and brother  ;D

I am also being crazy about them now. I think they are the best of the 60s bands. There are many good bands of that time, but somehow I get tired of listening to them quite soon but never get tired of The Kinks.
Certainly The Beatles are beyond comparison. There`s noone compared to them!

I agree! The past couple days I've really been into the Kinks, The Zombies, and Donovan but the Kinks are my favorite. I wish I had gotton into their stuff sooner. I've been on YouTube listening to thier music quite a lot today and my favorites are Lola, Waterloo Sunset, and Set Me Free (my very favorite!) I'm taking a mini beatle beak and trying to listen to more of the other great 60's bands.

I only had a Kinks compilation album , and i'm only really familiar with their singles which i like .
So today i've orded from Amazon four of their albums , basically cos there cheap , four 60's albums for under a five pounds each is a real bargain  ;D

On the way for my listening pleasure are :

1. Face To Face (1966)
2. Something Else (1967)
3. The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society (1968)
4. Arthur (Or The Decline and Fall of The British Empire ) (1969)

Really looking forward to hearing these albums for the first time , especially the last two  :)

Your right i'm not dissapointed Todd , i'm really impressed with Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire , simply stunning albums from  Ray Davis and the band .
Can't think why i never moved further than a greatest hits album .
I would'nt say Ray is as good as John and Paul , but he's not far behind them as a songwriter ?
His lyrics are so sharp and witty and there is some great use of the mellotron , not sure i would agree with what i've read that these Kinks albums were considered out of step with what was going on at the time .
They seem very much in line with what The Beatles were doing at the time ?  yes the themes are English and a bit pastoral , but nomore than Blackbird , Mother Nature's Son or Good Morning ?
Stand out tracks so far are :

The Village Green Preservation Society
Picture Book
Johny Thunder
Last of The Steam Powered Trains
Phenomenal Cat
Wicked Annabella

Victoria
Brainwashed
Australia
Shangri-La
Mr Churchill Says

Not played the other two Kinks albums i got yet , been playing these two back to back , they are going to become firm favourites , some of the very best 60's music or any music i've heard really great stuff  8)

Glad you like them. I rarely speak about them when people ask about your favorite bands, but they are one of mine. Maybe I just take them for granted. Anyways, hope you like 'Something Else' as its my favorite.

^^^^ I really like them especially Ray's lyrics he's a very clever man , i've began to play the other two i've got and they are equally as good .
A great 60's band with original ideas , will be playing these for the rest of my life  :)

Village Green is one of my favourite albums ever - not just the 60s.
Just about every song could have been a single though none of them were put out as singles.
I think they were really brave doing an album like that, with it being SO English and whimsical and backwards-looking.
In a year when everyone was calling for change, The Kinks were writing about how they wanted everything to stay the same. The Beatles were in India searching for some spiritual enlightenment, the Stones were singing about riots in Street Fighting Man, the Small Faces were going on a trip with Ogdens Nut Gone Flake, and The Who were working on their first Rock Opera, yet Ray Davies is writing songs about village life in England in days gone by.
I don't think it did very well commercially, but it didn't seem to bother The Kinks because they carried on in the same vein after that, with Arthur etc.
Village Green is up there with the best Beatles albums for me.

I'm loving Face To Face (1966) by The Kinks it's a great album , every bit as inventive as The Beatles Revolver or The Beach Boys Pet Sounds from the same year ?  8)

I have all their albums from the 60's & 70's. best ones i recommened is Village Green Presevation Socity,
Face to Face, Something Else by the Kinks and Arthur (or decline of the British Empire).
in the case of the 70's i should think Muswell Hillbillis, Low Budget, Sleepwalker & Misfits.

 :)

Honestly, you can not go wrong with a Kinks album on the whole, but I thought they started to drip a little starting with 'Lola versus Powerman'.

I really didn't like that album, and it sold very badly considering the success of Lola. Love Muswell Hillbillies though.

Considering the quality of their 60's albums they did'nt really have a great deal of success with their albums in either the UK or the USA , were they considered a singles band in the 60's ?

I think they were Dave. Though I've always been surprised at the lack of sales for 'Lola versus Powerman'. You'd have thought that even if it was a turkey it would have charted due to the success of the single. Very odd.

That's nice. They seem to have a brotherly relationship that makes the Gallaghers look like the Waltons. So good on them for doing it.
