So.... why were they really band from America by the musician's union between 1965 and 1969? The real reasons have never been disclosed! Was it due to an alleged fight with a union member while recording a US TV show - or was it because the union felt that British bands were taking over the US music scene and randomly chose to ban the Kinks?

For whatever the reason they were banned from touring the US, it seems that this was probably why Ray Davis' wrote songs that were so uniquely English at that time - name-checking the it-places of swinging London and writing of life in a quaint English village.

It's always struck me as strange that they are considered a singles band though - buy The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society CD and you will be blown away!!!

LOVE that track!! ;D

Was "Cherry Cola" even invented back then? It was intended to "coca-cola" but the BBC refused to play records with a brand references, so they had to re-record the lyric changing "coca-cola" to "cherry cola"!!

when i was younger i was told/heard that one of the reasons they never broke america was due to the fact they wouldnt pay protection money to mafia families and that all the other uk bands had, and it resulted in them not being able to return again ?

Well then what's cherry red? As in "We decided that we would have a soda. My favorite flavor, cherry red."

I always assumed that was cherry coke!

Muswell Hillbillies has always been a favourite of mine. I never realised it was that popular until Ray played a couple of songs from it when I saw him a couple of years ago. The place went mad. Well, everyone rattled their zimmer frames!

The Kinks were a brilliant band, so many classic songs! :)
i have all their 60's albums & most of the 70's albums!
Ray Davis is totally up their with Lennon & McCartney. :)

been into the Kinks since the mid-60's (but seriously started buying their albums in the 70's because The Fab, Stones & Pink Floyd always took precedence over almost all other bands for me)-- but once I really got into Ray's stuff I was hooked. Kronikles, Arthur, Village Green Preservation Society, Muswell Hillbillies (what a GREAT ALBUM !! ESPECIALLY "20th Century Man" !!),Preservation (act 1 & 2), Everybody's in Show Biz, Soap Opera, Schoolboys In Disgrace, Lola vs. the Powerman, u name it, I got it...

(plus you gotta read Dave Davies book, "Kink")

ps : Mr. Kite, I see you're a RUSH fan as well---Geddy Lee is WITHOUT QUESTION the best bassist next to McCartney (and Chris Squire of Yes )as far as I'm concerned. Being a Yank living near the Canadian border, I've gotten to see Geddy & Co. many times on their home turf in Toronto. This trio is incredible--always has been (The only other canadian band I love more is The Guess Who--who I also grew up with. Burton Cummings is a genuis)

Okay, to the person who said Ray Davies is up there with Lennon/McCartney. I wouldn't quite go that far. I mean, the Kinks have many amazing songs, but I don't think their catalogue compares with the Beatles in quality, quanitity or innovation. The only equal really is probably Bob Dylan. I'd put Davies in the same league as someone like Pete Townshend or even Paul Simon. Maybe even Mick and Keith. Except they're not underrated like Townshend or Simon are. But that's just my opinion and I'm no music expert or anything.

I'd put Lennon/McCartney out on their own. In joint second place: Ray Davies, Pete Townsend, Paul Weller.

I'd tie L/Mc with Dylan. Then a big pack following, yours plus Marley, Bowie, Wilson, Bacharat......

I suppose mine are all people who write about England and English people. I could put Damon Albarn in there.
