An Apple Beatle

Well they never had The mighty GOD George MArtin as producer but I would'nt say their production was bad. Very organic maybe surely not 'pretty bad'...?....:)

Quote from: An_Apple_BeatleIf it was'nt for The Beatles they would have conquered I reckon. Big Up The KINKS!!!

I've always thought a alrge slice of Beatlemania in America was more than just their music. Don't know if the Kinks would have the personality to create the stir The Beatles did. Other than Ray they're a quite a faceless band
don't follow leaders

An Apple Beatle

Pretty good point there Kevin.... I was'nt thinking about personalities when I wrote that...Purely songs...It's just there was a thread or question not long ago about what would have happened if there was no Beatles. To me, they would have been the obvious contenders from British Pop around that time had there been no Beatles.Other than RAy though, your completely right.
I do love their style though. ;)

I love the Kinks, but I have to admit that their 60s production sound is pretty horrible compared to the crispness and clearness of the Beatles and George Martin and EMI and Geoff Emerick.  I think Shel Talmy was their producer for the stuff on Pye.  I guess they didn't have the production team EMI had.  It's a shame that stuff can't be remastered.

The End

Awesome band!!!

Discuss them if you like!!! ;D

The Kinks make me happy. Especially their song Lola.
I am posting on an internet forum, therefore my opinion is fact.

The End

So.... why were they really band from America by the musician's union between 1965 and 1969? The real reasons have never been disclosed! Was it due to an alleged fight with a union member while recording a US TV show - or was it because the union felt that British bands were taking over the US music scene and randomly chose to ban the Kinks?

For whatever the reason they were banned from touring the US, it seems that this was probably why Ray Davis' wrote songs that were so uniquely English at that time - name-checking the it-places of swinging London and writing of life in a quaint English village.

It's always struck me as strange that they are considered a singles band though - buy The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society CD and you will be blown away!!!

LOVE that track!! ;D

Was "Cherry Cola" even invented back then? It was intended to "coca-cola" but the BBC refused to play records with a brand references, so they had to re-record the lyric changing "coca-cola" to "cherry cola"!!

fendertele

when i was younger i was told/heard that one of the reasons they never broke america was due to the fact they wouldnt pay protection money to mafia families and that all the other uk bands had, and it resulted in them not being able to return again ?

Well then what's cherry red? As in "We decided that we would have a soda. My favorite flavor, cherry red."

I always assumed that was cherry coke!

Muswell Hillbillies has always been a favourite of mine. I never realised it was that popular until Ray played a couple of songs from it when I saw him a couple of years ago. The place went mad. Well, everyone rattled their zimmer frames!

Especially Autumn Alumunac
<br />Thank god for the Beatles for taking the worlds heart and never returning it.
