They're an exception.  I'm surprised ABBA wasn't listed there.

Was ABBA ever that big in the US? They were huge in Australia and Europe but I got the impression they didn't have that big success over several years in the States.

Poor old Bjorn and Benny's pants look dangerously tight. I hope they didn't have to make sudden movements.  :o

ABBA was huge here too, Moog.  The only disco music I could ever listen to.

Yes, they were always on the radio when I was growing up. I loved them and so did all the other moms who chaperoned a trip to see "Mama Mia". My poor daughter and her friends were mortified by our behavior. LOL

And look at their boots.  I'm surprised they could even stand in those.  But hey, it was the 70s!

As a youngster my focus was a little above the boots.  :)

I recall the special they did in Australia. The girls had long dresses on but during one song they stripped them off to reveal something more like what they have on the album cover. I was only 12 or so but they certainly got my attention. The Beatles couldn't complete with that.

Outside of The Beatles' ones (and, buried deep in the '50s Masters' Box Set, The Elvis Christmas Album) I'm delighted to say that I own a big fat zero of that AWFUL list of records.

It reads almost like a list of records NOT to have, and you'd be laughed out of some of the more specialist (or po-faced!) record dealers in London for going anywhere near them.

On the subject of Pink Floyd, I once saw a list of their six best-selling albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and two others) and I only seemed to have the ones that weren't on the list.....i.e. the Syd one, the '68 one, the film soundtracks.

It wasn't always the case (1964 for example) but in 2014 it strikes me that the more popular something is, the more likely it is to be rubbish.

Your gran would always tell you that 'you get what you pay for' and I've no doubt that in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s these were very wise words, but in 2014, I'd be inclined (a) to go nowhere near something that has sold zillions, as it'll have more to do with marketing (Michael Jackson) than artistic worth, and (b) to actually go for the cheaper option.

Ironic I should consider this on a Beatles' (ie. the biggest group ever) website!

I got to 14. Aside from the Beatles ones there were some Zep and Pink Floyd. Can't say any if the later ones I'd claim to like. The sort of stuff that sells mega albums nowadays isn't the modern stuff I'm listening to or interested in.

It looks like the Beatles are the only ones who get 60s released on the list. It'd be interesting if someone did an analysis of the sales adjusted for the real value of the LP at the time of release.

I got to 16, so similar to you moog.

Im disappointed there is only one progressive rock album in there (Dark Side Of The Moon) , I always thought Supertramp sold a sh*t load of albums in the States (Breakfast In America) or maybe Close To The Edge by Yes.....and no Doors !

and no Jazz albums. Id have expected Miles Davies - Kind Of Blue or John Coltrane, or even Weather Report.

Great to see wonderful albums like Tapestry & Rumours, AC/DC & Bob Marley in there though  :)

I know how you were Barry; a real scofflaw! I dealt with your type all the time when I worked in circulation at the other library.  ;) Really, though, the condition of the people's cards never bothered me. There were more pressing issues to deal with like the time I found a bloody DVD security case in the stacks. Someone cut themselves pretty good stealing that movie.
The more beat up the card, the more books were read! probably.

The listing on Wikipedia for the RIIA figures has The Best of the Doors listed as a 10 million seller up near the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits. The listing might be a bit older (it has the white album as only a 9.5 million seller for instance) but wouldn't imagine relative positions would change that much.

Looking at the original listings on the RIIA site, it looks like the Doors are a victim of the double album adjustment. They sold 10 million "disks" but only 5 million units. So they've dropped off. That's where these lists get complicated. As double albums are usually more expensive that single albums it's a more impressive feat to sell them in large numbers. And as I alluded to earlier, how can you compare an album that sold millions in the 60s when most teenagers could maybe afford a few albums a year to one now where kids get $50 iTunes gift certificates from half a dozen different relatives at birthdays and Christmas. And even popular CDs can be had for pocket change.

Great to see wonderful albums like Tapestry

I was very pleased to see this album on there too. It's my favorite non-Beatles album on the list followed by Billy Joel's "The Stranger" and Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits. I was really into Billy Joel as a teenager but he lost me in the 80's. This is really the only album of his that I still listen to. There were actually quite a few albums that could be on a "used to love list', including The Eagles' Greatest Hits, Rumours, Led Zeppelin IV, and Van Halen's first album. I remember my brother coming home on leave from the Navy with that one. He sat me down and played it for me and then gave it to me. He did that a lot with albums. He was a really good guitarist so I tended to trust his opinion. I don't know how impressed he was by their later offerings. I hung in there with them for a while but now...eh. I still like to listen to the opening (Eruption and You Really Got Me) once in a while. Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits was another big favorite of mine and I still love them just as much but I've moved past that album in favor of their other ones and the Paul Simon Songbook. So that's my story...I'd proudly walk into any record store and buy those top 3!

And she looks good in her underwear.

That must be why I haven't had any huge selling albums.  ;D

It seems strange that a 'Best of.....' should be The Doors highest selling album because I can think of no other group where the original LPs are clearly the best way to listen to them.

Admittedly this is from a British perspective, where the various hits in America like 'Unknown Soldier', 'Touch Me', 'People Are Strange' didn't actually chart.

However, all my favourite Doors' songs are the kind that wouldn't be on such a compilation.....'Yes, The River Knows', 'Summer's Almost Gone', 'Wintertime Love', 'My Eyes Have Seen You', 'You're Lost Little Girl', 'Unhappy Girl'.....
