Auto-Tune
« on: April 26, 2021, 11:58:50 PM »

It's not like the old days when artists would give live performances and would be pitch-perfect like Linda Ronstadt here...

Even Cher makes use of Auto-Tune these days...

Here's her isolated vocal without Auto-Tune...

Yeah.  You gotta hand it to that Cher.  She really knows her job.   ;D

I was talking with someone just this morning about Auto Tune, and he said that the Beatles basically pioneered it, what with their elaborate studio endeavors, an assertion with which I disagree. Apples and oranges.

Kathy, you were right to disagree.  The Beatles employed tape-based Varispeed in the studio (eg. Strawberry Fields Forever).  Auto-Tune came about in the late 90s with development of that specific audio processor.  Mention that the next time you speak to that person.

Yeah that sounds disingenuous at best. If they’re just saying that the Beatles were pioneers of studio techniques in general than that’s unarguable. But if it’s to suggest that they were about pitch correction as a fix then that’s clearly incorrect. Pitch correction of individual notes really only developed in the late 70s with the intent of rescuing good vocal takes where the singer might have fluffed a couple of notes. And as HG says, AutoTune is a pretty recent development. It is used “artistically “ to give a vocal effect but as we see it’s also used pretty freely to make off key singers listenable.

^^^^

Maybe I'll just give him the forum URL and tell him to make that assertion here. He wouldn't stand a chance against you guys.  ;)

I don't think he meant it in an insulting way, just an ill-informed way. He's one of only four people I know in this state (two being my ex and my oldest daughter, the other being my hairdresser) who knows and enjoys all sorts of music. In a conversation with my friends last week one of them indicated she did not know who the Clash was! (How the hell do you get to your 50s and not know that?? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. I sent her a song to introduce her.)

There I go, veering off topic again.  :P

I'll try to enlighten him a bit when I see him at my part-time job shortly. Fingers crossed.

Actually, I probably won't. Women up here are supposed to be seen and not heard. Very retro. And not my style at all.

I was thinking about this thread the other day and how I told my kids that in The Who's "A Quick One While He's Away" that the band was not super-successful yet and could not afford the cellos to be played at ~4:48 so the band members simply chanted "cello, cello, cello. . ."

They thought that was really cool for some reason. Anything to educate them musically.  :)
